The clich about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon adapting himself according to fashion and trends While such a criticism is too glib there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singersongwriter Prior to his breakthrough in 1972 he recorded a proto-metal record and a poprock album eventually redefining glam rock with his ambiguously sexy Ziggy Stardust persona Ziggy made Bowie an international star yet he wasn't content to continue to churn out glitter rock By the mid-'70s he developed an effete sophisticated version of Philly soul that he dubbed plastic soul which eventually morphed into the eerie avant-pop of 1976's Station to Station Shortly afterward he relocated to Berlin where he recorded three experimental electronic albums with Brian Eno At the dawn of the '80s Bowie was still at the height of his powers yet following his blockbuster dance-pop album Let's Dance in 1983 he slowly sank into mediocrity before salvaging his career in the early '90s Even when he was out of fashion in the '80s and '90s it was clear that Bowie was one of the most influential musicians in rock for better and for worse Each one of his phases in the '70s sparked a number of subgenres including punk new wave goth rock the new romantics and electronica Few rockers ever had such lasting impactnnDavid Jones began performing music when he was 13 years old learning the saxophone while he was at Bromley Technical High School another pivotal event happened at the school when his left pupil became permanently dilated in a schoolyard fight Following his graduation at 16 he worked as a commercial artist while playing saxophone in a number of mod bands including the King Bees the Manish Boys (which also featured Jimmy Page as a session man) and Davey Jones the Lower Third All three of those bands released singles which were generally ignored yet he continued performing changing his name to David Bowie in 1966 after the Monkees' Davy Jones became an international star Over the course of 1966 he released three mod singles on Pye Records which were all ignored The following year he signed with Deram releasing the music hall Anthony Newley-styled David Bowie that year Upon completing the record he spent several weeks in a Scottish Buddhist monastery Once he left the monastery he studied with Lindsay Kemp's mime troupe forming his own mime company the Feathers in 1969 The Feathers were short-lived and he formed the experimental art group Beckenham Arts Lab in 1969nnBowie needed to finance the Arts Lab so he signed with Mercury Records that year and released Man of Words Man of Music a trippy singersongwriter album featuring Space Oddity The song was released as a single and became a major hit in the UK convincing Bowie to concentrate on music Hooking up with his old friend Marc Bolan he began miming at some of Bolan's T Rex concerts eventually touring with Bolan bassistproducer Tony Visconti guitarist Mick Ronson and drummer Cambridge as Hype The band quickly fell apart yet Bowie and Ronson remained close working on the material that formed Bowie's next album The Man Who Sold the World as well as recruiting Michael Woody Woodmansey as their drummer Produced by Tony Visconti who also played bass The Man Who Sold the World was a heavy guitar rock album that failed to gain much attention Bowie followed the album in late 1971 with the poprock Hunky Dory an album that featured Ronson and keyboardist Rick WakemannnFollowing the release of Hunky Dory Bowie began to develop his most famous incarnation Ziggy Stardust: an androgynous bisexual rock star from another planet Before he unveiled Ziggy Bowie claimed in a January 1972 interview with the Melody Maker that he was gay helping to stir interest in his forthcoming album Taking cues from Bolan's stylish glam rock Bowie dyed his hair orange and began wearing women's clothing He began calling himself Ziggy Stardust and his backing band -- Ronson Woodmansey and bassist Trevor Bolder -- were the Spiders from Mars The Rise Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was released with much fanfare in England in late 1972 The album and its lavish theatrical concerts became a sensation throughout England and it helped him become the only glam rocker to carve out a niche in America Ziggy Stardust became a word-of-mouth hit in the US and the re-released Space Oddity -- which was now also the title of the re-released Man of Words Man of Music -- reached the American Top 20 Bowie quickly followed Ziggy with Aladdin Sane later in 1973 Not only did he record a new album that year but he also produced Lou Reed's Transformer the Stooges' Raw Power and Mott the Hoople's comeback All the Young Dudes for which he also wrote the title tracknnGiven the amount of work Bowie packed into 1972 and 1973 it wasn't surprising that his relentless schedule began to catch up with him After recording the all-covers Pin-Ups with the Spiders from Mars he unexpectedly announced the band's breakup as well as his retirement from live performances during the group's final show that year He retreated from the spotlight to work on a musical adaptation of George Orwell's 1984 but once he was denied the rights to the novel he transformed the work into Diamond Dogs The album was released to generally poor reviews in 1974 yet it generated the hit single Rebel Rebel and he supported the album with an elaborate and expensive American tour As the tour progressed Bowie became fascinated with soul music eventually redesigning the entire show to reflect his new plastic soul Hiring guitarist Carlos Alomar as the band's leader Bowie refashioned his group into a Philly soul band and recostumed himself in sophisticated stylish fashions The change took fans by surprise as did the double-album David Live which featured material recorded on the 1974 tournnYoung Americans released in 1975 was the culmination of Bowie's soul obsession and it became his first major crossover hit peaking in the American Top Ten and generating his first US number one hit in Fame a song he co-wrote with John Lennon and Alomar Bowie relocated to Los Angeles where he earned his first movie role in Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) While in LA he recorded Station to Station which took the plastic soul of Young Americans into darker avant-garde-tinged directions yet was also a huge hit generating the Top Ten single Golden Years The album inaugurated Bowie's persona of the elegant Thin White Duke and it reflected Bowie's growing cocaine-fueled paranoia Soon he decided Los Angeles was too boring and returned to England shortly after arriving back in London he gave the awaiting crowd a Nazi salute a signal of his growing drug-addled detachment from reality The incident caused enormous controversy and Bowie left the country to settle in Berlin where he lived and worked with Brian EnonnOnce in Berlin Bowie sobered up and began painting as well as studying art He also developed a fascination with German electronic music which Eno helped him fulfill on their first album together Low Released early in 1977 Low was a startling mixture of electronics pop and avant-garde technique While it was greeted with mixed reviews at the time it proved to be one of the most influential albums of the late '70s as did its follow-up Heroes which followed that year Not only did Bowie record two solo albums in 1977 but he also helmed Iggy Pop's comeback records The Idiot and Lust for Life and toured anonymously as Pop's keyboardist He resumed his acting career in 1977 appearing in Just A Gigolo with Marlene Dietrich and Kim Novak as well as narrating Eugene Ormandy's version of Peter and the Wolf Bowie returned to the stage in 1978 launching an international tour that was captured on the double-album Stage During 1979 Bowie and Eno recorded Lodger in New York Switzerland and Berlin releasing the album at the end of the year Lodger was supported with several innovative videos as was 1980's Scary Monsters and these videos -- DJ Fashion Ashes to Ashes -- became staples on early MTVnnScary Monsters was Bowie's last album for RCA and it wrapped up his most innovative productive period Later in 1980 he performed the title role in stage production of The Elephant Man including several shows on Broadway Over the next two years he took an extended break from recording appearing in Christine F (1982) and the vampire movie The Hunger (1982) returning to the studio only for his 1981 collaboration with Queen Under Pressure and the theme for Paul Schrader's remake of Cat People In 1983 he signed an expensive contract with EMI Records and released Let's Dance Bowie had recruited Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers to produce the album giving the record a sleek funky foundation and hired the unknown Stevie Ray Vaughan as lead guitarist Let's Dance became his most successful record thanks to stylish innovative videos for Let's Dance and China Girl which turned both songs into Top Ten hits Bowie supported the record with the sold-out arena tour Serious MoonlightnnGreeted with massive success for the first time Bowie wasn't quite sure how to react and he eventually decided to replicate Let's Dance with 1984's Tonight While the album sold well producing the Top Ten hit Blue Jean it received poor reviews and ultimately was a commercial disappointment He stalled in 1985 recording a duet of Martha the Vandellas' Dancing in the Street with Mick Jagger for Live Aid He also spent more time jet-setting appearing at celebrity events across the globe and appeared in several movies -- Into the Night (1985) Absolute Beginners (1986) Labyrinth (1986) -- that turned out to be bombs Bowie returned to recording in 1987 with the widely panned Never Let Me Down supporting the album with the Glass Spider tour which also received poor reviews In 1989 he remastered his RCA catalog with Rykodisc for CD release kicking off the series with the three-disc box Sound + Vision Bowie supported the discs with an accompanying tour of the same name claming that he was retiring all of his older characters from performance following the tour Sound + Vision was successful and Ziggy Stardust re-charted amidst the hooplannSound + Vision may have been a success but Bowie's next project was perhaps his most unsuccessful Picking up on the abrasive dissonant rock of Sonic Youth and the Pixies Bowie formed his own guitar rock combo Tin Machine with guitarist Reeves Gabrels bassist Hunt Sales and his drummer brother Tony who had previously worked on Iggy Pop's Lust for Life with Bowie Tin Machine released an eponymous album to poor reviews that summer and supported it with a club tour which was only moderately successful Despite the poor reviews Tin Machine released a second album the appropriately titled Tin Machine II in 1991 and it was completely ignorednnBowie returned to a solo career in 1993 with the sophisticated soulful Black Tie White Noise recording the album with Nile Rodgers and his now-permanent collaborator Reeves Gabrels The album was released on Savage a subsidiary of RCA and received positive reviews but his new label went bankrupt shortly after its release and the album disappeared Black Tie White Noise was the first indication that Bowie was trying hard to resuscitate his career as was the largely instrumental 1994 soundtrack The Buddha of Suburbia In 1995 he reunited with Brian Eno for the wildly hyped industrial rock-tinged Outside Several critics hailed the album as a comeback and Bowie supported it with a co-headlining tour with Nine Inch Nails in order to snag a younger alternative audience but his gambit failed audiences left before Bowie's performance and Outside disappeared He quickly returned to the studio in 1996 recording Earthling an album heavily influenced by techno and drum'n'bass Upon its early 1997 release Earthling received generally positive reviews yet the album failed to gain an audience and many techno purists criticized Bowie for allegedly exploiting their subculture hours followed in 1999 For 2002 Bowie reunited with producer Toni Visconti and released Heathen to very positive reviews He continued on with Visconti for Reality in 2003

Costello is one of the most innovative influential and best songwriters since Bob DylannnThe son of British bandleader Ross McManus Costello (born Declan McManus) worked as a computer programmer during the early '70s performing under the name DP Costello in various folk clubs In 1976 he became the leader of country-rock group Flip City During this time he recorded several demo tapes of his original material with the intention of landing a record contract A copy of these tapes made its way to Jake Riviera one of the heads of the fledgling independent record label Stiff Riviera signed Costello to Stiff as a solo artist in 1977 the singersongwriter adopted the name Elvis Costello at this time taking his first name from Elvis Presley and his last name from his mother's maiden with the Attractions until 1994nnDuring 1987 Costello negotiated a new worldwide record contract with Warner Bros Records and began a songwriting collaboration with Paul McCartney Two years later he released Spike the most musically diverse collection he had ever recorded Spike featured the first appearance of songs written by Costello and McCartney including the single Veronica Veronica became his biggest American hit peaking at number 19 Two years later he released Mighty Like a Rose which echoed Spike in its diversity yet it was a darker more challenging record In 1993 Costello collaborated with the Brodsky Quartet on The Juliet Letters a song cycle that was the songwriter's first attempt at classical music he also wrote an entire album for former Transvision Vamp singer Wendy James called Now Ain't the Time for Your Tears That same year Costello licensed the rights to his pre-1987 catalog (My Aim Is True to Blood and Chocolate) to Rykodisc in AmericannCostello reunited with the Attractions to record the majority of 1994's Brutal Youth the most straightforward and pop-oriented album he had recorded since Goodbye Cruel World The Attractions backed Costello on a worldwide tour in 1994 and played concerts with him throughout 1995 In 1995 he released his long-shelved collection of covers Kojak Variety In the spring of 1996 Costello released All This Useless Beauty which featured a number of original songs he had given to other artists but never recorded himself Painted from Memory a collaboration with the legendary Burt Bacharach followed in 1998nnThe album was a success critically but it only succeeded in foreign markets outside of their home countries of the United States and Britain A jazz version of the record made with Bill Frisell was put on hold when Costello's label began to freeze up due to political maneuvering Undaunted Costello and Bacharach hit the road and performed in the States and Europe Then after Bacharach left Costello added Steve Nieve to the tour and traveled around the world on what they dubbed the Lonely World Tour This took them into 1999 where both Notting Hill and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me featured significant contributions from Costello In fact he appeared with Bacharach in the latter as a pair of Carnaby Street musicians albeit street musicians with a gorgeous grand piano at their disposalnnContinuing his tour with Nieve he began singing the last song with a microphone forcing the audience to sit in complete silence as he usually performed Couldn't Call It Unexpected No 4 with nothing but his dulcet baritone filling the auditorium After the record company's various mergers ended Costello found himself on Universal Records and he tested their promotional abilities with a second greatest-hits record (The Very Best of Elvis Costello) The label promoted the album strongly making it a hit in his native Britain Unfortunately they also made it clear that they had no intention of giving a new album the same promotional push leaving him to venture into other fields as he awaited the end of his record contract His first project was an album of pop standards performed with Anne Sofie Von Otter which included a few songs originally written by Costello The album came out in March of 2001 on the Deutsche Grammophon label and it neatly coincided with the extensive re-release of his entire catalog up to 1996 under Rhino Records Each disc included an extra CD of rare material and liner notes written by Costello making them incredible treats for fansnnIn 2001 he found himself with a residency at UCLA where he performed several concerts and was instrumental in teaching music during the year He also began work on a self-produced album that featured Pete Thomas and Nieve -- now billed as a band called the Imposters -- entitled When I Was Cruel and the album finally saw release on Island Records in the spring of 2002 at the end of the year he released a collection of B-sides and leftovers from the album's sessions entitled Cruel SmilennWhen I Was Cruel kicked off another productive era for the ever prolific Costello In 2003 he returned with North a collection of classically styled pop songs pitched halfway between Gershwin and Sondheim The next year he collaborated with his new wife Diana Krall on her first collection of original material The Girl in the Other Room That fall Costello released two albums of original material: a classical work entitled Il Sogno and the concept album The Delivery Man a rock roll record cut with the Imposters My Flame Burns Blue from 2006 was a live album with Costello fronting the 52-piece jazz orchestra the Metropole Orkest On the album classic Costello songs with new orchestral arrangements appeared alongside new compositions and a performance of the entire Il Sogno The River in Reverse a collaboration with RB legend Allen Toussaint arrived in 2006 followed by Momofuku credited to Elvis Costello the Imposters in 2008 from Lost Highway

Freemasons in midst of popularity membership boom The secretive society gains a higher hipper profile as younger men seek out a place for fraternal bonding By Adam Tschorn Los Angeles Times Staff Writer May 18 2008 LA Times n n IN LOS FELIZ across from a 7-Eleven on North Vermont Avenue a few dozen men in their early 20s to late 80s share a dinner behind closed doors Some wear full tuxedos with bow ties and jeweled cuff links some have shoulder-length hair and others wear open-collared shirts that reveal the slightest filigree of tattoo arching across their chests Over Italian food retired lawyers and judges sit elbow-to-elbow with owners of scrap metal yards and vintage clothing boutiques They hold forth on philosophy the weather they rib each other and joke about saving room for cannoli As they reach for seconds they reveal skull-cracking rings emblazoned with a compass and a square Meet the millennial Masons As secret societies go it is one of the oldest and most famous Its enrollment roster includes Louis Armstrong and Gerald Ford and it has been depicted in movies such as The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure Once more than 4 million strong (back in the 1950s) it has been in something of a popularity free-fall ever since Viewed with suspicion as a bastion of antiquated values and forced camaraderie the Masons have seen membership rolls plummet more than 60 to just 15 million in 2006 Only now the trend seems to be reversing itself and nowhere more noticeably than in Southern California The reasons seem clear In another Masonic Hall this one on La Cienega a Sri Lankan-born banker a sunglasses-wearing Russian immigrant and a continent-hopping Frenchman break bread poke at their salads and chat about their health For a time it looked as if Masonry was going into a sharp decline if not the death throes said UCLA history professor Margaret C Jacob who has written extensively about the fraternal order But it looks like it may be making a comeback That's because the Freemasons whose tenets forbid soliciting or recruiting members have enthusiastically embraced the Internet as a way to leverage curiosity about an organization with its roots in Europe's medieval stonemasons guilds Freemasonry today sees itself as a thinking man's salon a learned society with a philanthropic bent We had a record number of new members last year said Allan Casalou grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of California We added 2000 men which is the most since 1998 and our seventh straight year of membership increases And to paraphrase that Oldsmobile campaign these definitely aren't your father's Freemasons They are bar owners male models and olive-oil brokers They are men like Zulu an LA tattoo artist with a swirling Maori-inspired design inked across his face and a panoply of metal piercing his ears nose and face They are men like Jonathan Kanarek who runs a men's vintage clothing store on Hollywood Boulevard and whose retro chic wardrobe of polka-dot ascots glen-plaid jackets and smartly pressed pocket squares earned him a spot on Esquire magazine's 2007 list of best-dressed real men in America And they are men like Daemon Hillin whose surfer-dude looks and blinding white smile can be found on Japanese TV where he plays sidekick and comic foil to the Japanese version of the Hilton sisters They are also all men who want to be part of an all-for-one and one-for-all brotherhood built on shared ideals philosophical pursuits and a penchant for rings aprons and funny hats As Zulu bluntly put it: I joined because I was looking for people Beedingwood House taken mid to late 90s showing the glazed front section pre-collapse and also the small round room circling the larger round room still in tact The driveway and greenery are also much less overgrown The house and estate was built for Thomas Anthony Denny and his wife Mary Jane Noel in 1876 in the St Leonard's Forest area in West Sussex Denny was an Irish businessman and in his own words he was a pork philanthropist A great loss befell him the following year after moving into Beedingwood with the death of his wife Mary in 1877 He resided quietly at Beedingwood and often donated large sums of money to charitable organisiations most notably paying the Salvation Army's first year of rent at their London headquarters in 1881 T A Denny stayed in the house until 189394 when he married the evangelist Elizabeth Hope and subsequentally moved away In 1894 the house's well-known owner the Reverend EDL Harvey stepped down from his job as Rector at Downham Market in Norfolk and moved his family to Beedingwood The Reverend Edward Douglas Lennox Harvey MA OBE Justice of the Peace Deputy Lieutenant for Sussex Chairman of Sussex County Cricket Club and Vice Chairman of West Sussex County Council (of the wealthy Harvey's Bristol Cream family) was a very successful man locally However he sadly incurred much tragedy in his life with the loss of his wife 1 daughter and 3 sons He remarried in 1911 and was the longest and kindest resident of Beedingwood residing here for 44 years until his death in 1938 at the age of 80 Soon after the family sold the estate probably due to the death tax During the Harvey family years the gardens were featured in several publications of The Gardener a long running gardening magazine From the point of the Reverend's death things started to go downhill for the estate During the Second World War the house was used as temporary accomadation for various civilians including evacuated children from London It is well documented that in 1943 the Roffey Park Institute acquired the neighbouring Roffey Park estate along with the Beedingwood estate in 1946 and adapted the house to serve as auxilary accomadation and dining floorspace for the Institute They added central heating and electricity to the house aswell as the undignified 1950s kitchen block extension tucked behind and around the circular room on the north-east corner of the house Mnay of the large victorian rooms were also divided up with cheap partition walls and many fireplaces were removed or boarded over In the early 60s the Institute became a publically owned company and by the early 70s dropped the rehabilitation side of the business building new premises tacked onto the already converted Beedingwood stables The local Health Authority took over the Roffey Park House Hospital and Beedingwood In 1973 the house became exclusively the staff housing for the Roffey Park Hospital In 1981 the Roffey Park Hospital was closed down interestingly it was the first mental hospital in England to close due to the Care in the Community act of 1980 By the early 80s Beedingwood was becoming very expensive to maintain and along with the now obselete Roffey Park Hospital the Health Authority sold both the high maintenance estates in 1983 Beedingwood was used briefly as a nursing home for the elderly in the mid 80s and planning permission was submitted for this change of use in 1987 however nothing much came of this Both of the Estates were sold to a property development company around this time Conversion of Beedingwood into 10 luxery apartments was scheduled for 1990 The developers tried to get Beedingwood and Roffey Park House listed in order to gain permission to erect a limited number of new dwellings in the grounds of both properties to compensate for the expensive renovation costs The latter was successful however it was decided Beedingwood wasn't worthy of listing status due to too many original features having been removed This decision was appealed but English Heritage upheld the decision once again due to too many of the house's original features being removed or stolen The house's tourelle originally had a spire on top of it however by 1955 this had been removed for unknown reasons The house also had beautiful carved decorative barge boards these had also been removed before 1955 Sadly site security was centered around the slightly larger Roffey Park House earmarked to be turned into a major hotel and Beedingwood began to suffer from leaking roofs neglect and thieves drawn to the valuable victorian woodwork slate and fittings Due to the property market of the early 90s the developers changed their plans for Beedingwood from 10 to 24 apartments and a maisonette This plan required a large extension to be extended from the rear of the property and the council considered this too large A plan was then submitted for 19 apartments a small new extension being built where the 1950s extension already was and 7 luxery houses replacing original dwellings along the existing driveway The council didn't object to this application however legal technicalities required a further application to be submiitted to them and the developer stalled During this time Beedingwood was becoming an open-house and a rave was held one weekend in the empty house and much of the interior including nearly every pane of glass in the house was damaged or broken The council complained about the lack of security to the developers and they watertighted and boarded the house temporarily In the early 90s the company put the Beedingwood Estate up for auction and it was sold to another property developer He sold off most of the land to a housing developer keeping Beedingwood and they used the existing planning permission to build the 7 houses sadly demolishing the coach house in the process The conversion of the house never took place the new owner apparantly wasn't interested in restoring the building and was only interested in the land it was built on He gutted the house's interior removing the panelled ceilings wooden panelling plaster mouldings bannisters doors bathroom fittings fireplaces and even the floorboards The stained glass skylight was probably removed at this time too Apart from the staircases joists and the carved screen in the greeting's parlour (installed too firmly to remove in one piece) the house was now internally a shell The doors and windows were breezeblocked up and the house was left From this point onwards Beedingwood went downhill fast the thieves and vandals once again gained access and the missing slate and leaking roofs also helped to weaken the houses structure By 2000 the house was beyond reasonable repair the joists now rotten and non-existant in the west side of the house and the new owners submitted an application to demolish the unlisted house and erect an apartment block on the footprint of the existing house this application was approved and for the next 7 years Beedingwood was left to rot and decay further into a sad yet dignified state The rotten timber front glazed section above the port cochere and front door collapsed in the early 2000's leaving a gaping hole in the front of the house and on April 28th 2007 the house was found burning By the time the fire was out the authorities declared the building dangerous and it was demolished the same day Even in its decayed and neglected state it was easy to see what a masterpiece this house really was Credit should also be given to the victorian craftsmen who built the house even after all the years of wet and neglect the structure was still holding up firm indeed even after the fire it is said that apart from the damaged areas the building was still firm No modern building would stand up to so much neglect Beedingwood will be sadly missed by many RIP Beedingwood 1876 - 2007 In August 2008 planning permission was granted for 3 large houses and triple garages to be built on the
