As the title says this is the outfit Junko wears during her Genin-Chuunin years (A timespan of about six years she graduates the Ninja Academy at twelve and becomes a Jounin at eighteen) :3 I really love Kushina so I wanted Junkos outfit (during this timeframe) to resemble hers I hope that it looks inspired by and not simply a carbon copy of Kushinas oo Believe it or not Junko was a complete tomboy as a child Then as she entered her teens she decided to become more feminine She let her short-cropped hair grow out but kept it in a ponytail as she felt a tad insecure about doing so Keeping with this feminine attitude she also began to wear certain accessories (such as small earrings and those two ribbons that keep her leg-wrappings up those little things that only girls would pay attention to or worry about) And In case you were wondering I decided to add some color to Junkos skin at least during her pre-Shippuden appearance xD During her late-teens however her skin adopts its current pallor due to a combination of stress and lack of sleeplike mine did (fuck you college xD)

push it forwardnnDavis was the son of a dental surgeon Dr Miles Dewey Davis Jr and a music teacher Cleota Mae (Henry) Davis and thus grew up in the black middle class of east St Louis after the family moved there shortly after his birth He became interested in music during his childhood and by the age of 12 began taking trumpet lessons While still in high school he started to get jobs playing in local bars and at 16 was playing gigs out of town on weekends At 17 he joined Eddie Randle's Blue Devils a territory band based in St Louis He enjoyed a personal apotheosis in 1944 just after graduating from high school when he saw and was allowed to sit in with Billy Eckstine's big band who was playing in St Louis The band featured trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonist Charlie Parker the architects of the emerging bebop style of jazz which was characterized by fast inventive soloing and dynamic rhythm variations It is striking that Davis fell so completely under Gillespie and Parker's spell since his own slower and less flashy style never really compared to theirs But bebop was the new sound of the day and the young trumpeter was bound to follow it He did so by leaving the Midwest to attend the Institute of Musical Art in New York City (renamed Juilliard) in September 1944 Shortly after his arrival in Manhattan he was playing in clubs with Parker and by 1945 he had abandoned his academic studies for a full-time career as a jazz musician initially joining Benny Carter's band and making his first recordings as a sideman He played with Eckstine in 1946-1947 and was a member of Parker's group in 1947-1948 making his recording debut as a leader on a 1947 session that featured Parker pianist John Lewis bassist Nelson Boyd and drummer Max Roach This was an isolated date however and Davis spent most of his time playing and recording behind Parker But in the summer of 1948 he organized a nine-piece band with an unusual horn section In addition to himself it featured an alto saxophone a baritone saxophone a trombone a French horn and a tuba This nonet employing arrangements by Gil Evans and others played for two weeks at the Royal Roost in New York in September Earning a contract with Capitol Records the band went into the studio in January 1949 for the first of three sessions which produced 12 tracks that attracted little attention at first The band's relaxed sound however affected the musicians who played it among them Kai Winding Lee Konitz Gerry Mulligan John Lewis JJ Johnson and Kenny Clarke and it had a profound influence on the development of the cool jazz style on the West Coast In February 1957 Capitol finally issued the tracks together on an LP called Birth of the Cool Davis meanwhile had moved on to co-leading a band with pianist Tadd Dameron in 1949 and the group took him out of the country for an appearance at the Paris Jazz Festival in May But the trumpeter's progress was impeded by an addiction to heroin that plagued him in the early '50s His performances and recordings became more haphazard but in January 1951 he began a long series of recordings for the Prestige label that became his main recording outlet for the next several years He managed to kick his habit by the middle of the decade and he made a strong impression playing 'Round Midnight at the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1955 a performance that led the major label Columbia Records to sign him The prestigious contract allowed him to put together a permanent band and he organized a quintet featuring saxophonist John Coltrane pianist Red Garland bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones who began recording his Columbia debut 'Round About Midnight in October As it happened however he had a remaining five albums on his Prestige contract and over the next year he was forced to alternate his Columbia sessions with sessions for Prestige to fulfill this previous commitment The latter resulted in the Prestige albums The New Miles Davis Quintet Cookin' Workin' Relaxin' and Steamin' making Davis' first quintet one of his better-documented outfits In May 1957 just three months after Capitol released the Birth of the Cool LP Davis again teamed with arranger Gil Evans for his second Columbia LP Miles Ahead Playing flgelhorn Davis fronted a big band on music that extended the Birth of the Cool concept and even had classical overtones Released in 1958 the album was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame intended to honor recordings made before the Grammy Awards were instituted in 1959 In December 1957 Davis returned to Paris where he improvised the background music for the film L'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud (Escalator to the Gallows) Jazz Track an album containing this music earned him a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance Solo or Small Group He added saxophonist Cannonball Adderley to his group creating the Miles Davis Sextet who recorded the album Milestones in April 1958 Shortly after this recording Red Garland was replaced on piano by Bill Evans and Jimmy Cobb took over for Philly Joe Jones on drums In July Davis again collaborated with Gil Evans and an orchestra on an album of music from Porgy and Bess Back in the sextet Davis began to experiment with modal playing basing his improvisations on scales rather than chord changes This led to his next band recording Kind of Blue in March and April 1959 an album that became a landmark in modern jazz and the most popular disc of Davis' career eventually selling over two million copies a phenomenal success for a jazz record In sessions held in November 1959 and March 1960 Davis again followed his pattern of alternating band releases and collaborations with Gil Evans recording Sketches of Spain containing traditional Spanish music and original compositions in that style The album earned Davis and Evans Grammy nominations in 1960 for Best Jazz Performance Large Group and Best Jazz Composition More Than 5 minutes they won in the latter categorynnBy the time Davis returned to the studio to make his next band album in March 1961 Adderley had departed Wynton Kelly had replaced Bill Evans at the piano and John album called Someday My Prince Will Come The record made the pop charts in March 1962 but it was preceded into the bestseller lists by the Davis quintet's next recording the two-LP set Miles Davis in Person (Friday Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk San Francisco) recorded in April The following month Davis recorded another live show as he and his band were joined by an orchestra led by Gil Evans at Carnegie Hall in May The resulting Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall was his third LP to reach the pop charts and it earned Davis and Evans a 1962 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance by a Large The upbeat music had me finding my way through the crowds to where a group of people gathered in a circle around something I pushed my way to the front to see a man sitting cross-legged against the stone wall as his fingers danced across the holes of his instrument As the music played my attention was turned to a woman older than me but younger than Devi in the center of the crowd n She wore a red skirt that flowed around her heels with a long slit high up on her right thigh Her stomach was bare showing of her dark suntanned skin and a ruby fabric that matched her skirt was strapless against her chest with a pure silver ring looping around her neck to hold it up Clear beads jangled from the bottom of the top and thick silver bangles chimed along her arms Her long black hair was pinned up at the back of her neck The womans face was narrow and her almond-shaped eyes were of the deepest brown n She danced barefoot the beat of the music letting her body sway this way and that so that every man in the crowd drooled Her hips rocked back and forth to the flutists song while a boy of maybe four or five walked through the crowds offering up a clay bowl for tips I threw in two coppers for good measure still watching the Gawye woman Through my magical vision I saw a pale aura around the dancer It was barely visible and not very strong but definitely magical

personal apotheosis in 1944 just after graduating from high school when he saw and was allowed to sit in with Billy Eckstine's big band who was playing in St Louis The band featured trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonist Charlie Parker the architects of the emerging bebop style of jazz which was characterized by fast inventive soloing and dynamic rhythm variations It is striking that Davis fell so completely under Gillespie and Parker's spell since his own slower and less flashy style never really compared to theirs But bebop was the new sound of the day and the young trumpeter was bound to follow it He did so by leaving the Midwest to attend the Institute of Musical Art in New York City (renamed Juilliard) in September 1944 Shortly after his arrival in Manhattan he was playing in clubs with Parker and by 1945 he had abandoned his academic studies for a full-time career as a jazz musician initially joining Benny Carter's band and making his first recordings as a sideman He played with Eckstine in 1946-1947 and was a member of Parker's group in 1947-1948 making his recording debut as a leader on a 1947 session that featured Parker pianist John Lewis bassist Nelson Boyd and drummer Max Roach This was an isolated date however and Davis spent most of his time playing and recording behind Parker But in the summer of 1948 he organized a nine-piece band with an unusual horn section In addition to himself it featured an alto saxophone a baritone saxophone a trombone a French horn and a tuba This nonet employing arrangements by Gil Evans and others played for two weeks at the Royal Roost in New York in September Earning a contract with Capitol Records the band went into the studio in January 1949 for the first of three sessions which produced 12 tracks that attracted little attention at first The band's relaxed sound however affected the musicians who played it among them Kai Winding Lee Konitz Gerry Mulligan John Lewis JJ Johnson and Kenny Clarke and it had a profound influence on the development of the cool jazz style on the West Coast In February 1957 Capitol finally issued the tracks together on an LP called Birth of the Cool Davis meanwhile had moved on to co-leading a band with pianist Tadd Dameron in 1949 and the group took him out of the country for an appearance at the Paris Jazz Festival in May But the trumpeter's progress was impeded by an addiction to heroin that plagued him in the early '50s His performances and recordings became more haphazard but in January 1951 he began a long series of recordings for the Prestige label that became his main recording outlet for the next several years He managed to kick his habit by the middle of the decade and he made a strong impression playing 'Round Midnight at the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1955 a performance that led the major label Columbia Records to sign him The prestigious contract allowed him to put together a permanent band and he organized a quintet featuring saxophonist John Coltrane pianist Red Garland bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones who began recording his Columbia debut 'Round About Midnight in October As it happened however he had a remaining five albums on his Prestige contract and over the next year he was forced to alternate his Columbia sessions with sessions for Prestige to fulfill this previous commitment The latter resulted in the Prestige albums The New Miles Davis Quintet Cookin' Workin' Relaxin' and Steamin' making Davis' first quintet one of his better-documented outfits In May 1957 just three months after Capitol released the Birth of the Cool LP Davis again teamed with arranger Gil Evans for his second Columbia LP Miles Ahead Playing flgelhorn Davis fronted a big band on music that extended the Birth of the Cool concept and even had classical overtones Released in 1958 the album was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame intended to honor recordings made before the Grammy Awards were instituted in 1959 In December 1957 Davis returned to Paris where he improvised the background music for the film L'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud (Escalator to the Gallows) Jazz Track an album containing this music earned him a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance Solo or Small Group He added saxophonist Cannonball Adderley to his group creating the Miles Davis Sextet who recorded the album Milestones in April 1958 Shortly after this recording Red Garland was replaced on piano by Bill Evans and Jimmy Cobb took over for Philly Joe Jones on drums In July Davis again collaborated with Gil Evans and an orchestra on an album of music from Porgy and Bess Back in the sextet Davis began to experiment with modal playing basing his improvisations on scales rather than chord changes This led to his next band recording Kind of Blue in March and April 1959 an album that became a landmark in modern jazz and the most popular disc of Davis' career eventually selling over two million copies a phenomenal success for a jazz record In sessions held in November 1959 and March 1960 Davis again followed his pattern of alternating band releases and collaborations with Gil Evans recording Sketches of Spain containing traditional Spanish music and original compositions in that style The album earned Davis and Evans Grammy nominations in 1960 for Best Jazz Performance Large Group and Best Jazz Composition More Than 5 minutes they won in the latter categorynnBy the time Davis returned to the studio to make his next band album in March 1961 Adderley had departed Wynton Kelly had band were joined by an orchestra led by Gil Evans at Carnegie Hall in May The resulting Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall was his third LP to reach the pop charts and it earned Davis and Evans a 1962 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance by a Large Group Instrumental Davis and Evans teamed up again in 1962 for what became their final collaboration Quiet Nights The album was not issued until 1964 when it reached the charts and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Large Group or Soloist with Large Group In 1996 Columbia Records released a six-CD box set Miles Davis amp Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings that won the Grammy for Best Historical Album Quiet Nights was preceded into the marketplace by Davis' next band effort Seven Steps to Heaven recorded in the spring of 1963 with an entirely new lineup consisting of saxophonist George Coleman pianist Victor Feldman bassist Ron Carter and drummer Frank Butler During the sessions Feldman was replaced by Herbie Hancock and Butler by Tony Williams The album found Davis making a transition to his next great group of which Carter Hancock and Williams would be members It was another pop chart entry that earned 1963 Grammy nominations for both Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Soloist or Small Group and Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Large Group The quintet Soloist with Small Group and My Funny Valentine recorded in February 1964 and released in 1965 when it reached the pop charts By September 1964 the final member of the classic Miles Davis Quintet of albums of original compositions contributed by the band members starting in January 1965 with ESP followed by Miles Smiles (1967 Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Small With the Horn in 1980 and going back to touring in 1981 By now he was an elder statesman of jazz and his innovations had been incorporated into the music at least by those who supported his eclectic approach He was also a celebrity whose appeal extended far beyond the basic jazz audience He performed on the worldwide jazz festival circuit and recorded a series of albums that made the pop charts including We Want Miles (1982 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance by a Soloist) Star People Decoy and You're Under Arrest In 1986 after 30 years with Columbia he switched to Warner audiences and demonstrated his affinity with tradition At a time when jazz is inclining toward academia and repertory orchestras rather than moving forward he is a reminder of the music's essential quality of boundless invention using all available means

I'm blessed with a beautiful park in the neighborhood where I live: it's called Het Zuiderpark (South Park in English) No you won't see Stan Kyle or Cartman quarreling over there and Kenny won't be killed for the 1000th time It's almost a kilometer from where I live and I usually go there by footYou can find me there to stretch my legs get a breath of fresh air ease my mind and of course make a photo or twoI try to shoot unnoticed I just want to be one with the park and the people who also strolling like meI don't want to be the so-called wannabe arty-farty photographer when I'm thereBut sometimes you can't escape the fact that some of the parklovers notice that you're just a little more interested in a tree or for example a combination of a little piece of nature perspective and colour that makes you look longer with a dreamy or tense glance while others would pass the sceneThus on the picture above I was trying to make a picture of a composition that depicted youngfresh and old while being on my knees and in a mesmerizing state of mind while somebody was yelling in my direction The yelling kept onWhen I finally get on my feet I saw an old man in an electric wheelchair and realized that he had been calling for attention but I walked away because I wasn't really in the mood for a conversation with a strangerWhen I watched my photo's on a big screen at home I discovered him again on one of my photos I shot more that I had expectedA nice little moment of photography

gives the album true power is the subtly textured music which evolves from ponderous neo-psychedelic art rock to jazz fusion and blues-rock before turning back to psychedelia It's dense with detail but leisurely paced creating its own dark haunting world Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon but no other record defines them quite as well as this onenPink Floyd is the premier space rock band Since the mid-'60s their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical operatic quality in both sound and words Despite their astral image the group was brought down to earth in the 1980s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and ultimately ownership of the band's very name After that time they were little more than a dinosaur act capable of filling stadiums and topping the charts but offering little more than a spectacular recreation of their most successful formulas Their latter-day staleness cannot disguise the fact that for the first decade world with a sense of poetic childlike wondernnThe group landed a recording contract with EMI in early 1967 and made the Top 20 with a brilliant debut single Arnold Layne a sympathetic comic vignette about a transvestite The follow-up the kaleidoscopic See Emily Play made the Top Ten The debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn also released in 1967 may have been the greatest British psychedelic album other than Sgt Pepper's Dominated almost wholly by Barrett's songs the album was a charming fun house of driving mysterious rockers (Lucifer Sam) odd character sketches (The Gnome) childhood flashbacks (Bike Matilda Mother) and freakier pieces with lengthy instrumental passages (Astronomy Domine Interstellar Overdrive Pow R Toch) that mapped out their fascination with space travel The record was not only like no other at the time it was like no other that Pink Floyd would make colored as it was by a vision that was far more humorous pop-friendly and lighthearted than those of their subsequent epicsnnThe reason Pink Floyd never made a similar album was that Piper was the only one to be recorded under Barrett's leadership Around mid-1967 the prodigy began showing increasingly alarming signs of mental instability Barrett would go catatonic on-stage playing music that had little to do with the material or not playing at all An American tour had to be cut short when he was barely able to function at all let alone play the pop star game Dependent upon Barrett for most of their vision and material the rest of the group was nevertheless finding him impossible to work with live or in the studionnAround the beginning of 1968 guitarist Dave Gilmour a friend of the band who was also from Cambridge was brought in as a fifth member The idea was that Gilmour would enable the Floyd to continue as a live outfit Barrett would still be able to write and contribute to the records That couldn't work either and within a few months Barrett was out of the group Pink Floyd's management looking at the wreckage of a band that was now without its lead guitarist lead singer and primary songwriter decided to abandon the group and manage Barrett as a solo actnnSuch calamities would have proven insurmountable for 99 out of 100 bands in similar predicaments Incredibly Pink Floyd would regroup and not only maintain their popularity but eventually become even more successful It was early in the game yet after all the first album had made the British Top Ten but the group was still virtually unknown in America where the loss of Syd Barrett meant nothing to the media Gilmour was an excellent guitarist and the band proved capable of writing enough original material to generate further ambitious albums Waters eventually emerging as the dominant composer The 1968 follow-up to Piper at the Gates of Dawn A Saucerful of Secrets made the British Top Ten using Barrett's vision as an obvious blueprint but taking a more formal somber and quasi-classical tone especially in the long instrumental parts Barrett for his part would go on to make a couple of interesting solo records before his mental problems instigated a retreat into oblivionnnOver the next four years Pink Floyd would continue to polish their brand of experimental rock which married psychedelia with ever-grander arrangements on a Wagnerian operatic scale Hidden underneath the pulsing reverberant organs and guitars and insistently restated themes were subtle blues and pop influences that kept the material accessible to a wide audience Abandoning the singles market they concentrated on album-length works and built a huge following in the progressive rock underground with constant touring in both Europe and North America While LPs like Ummagumma (divided into live recordings and experimental outings by each member of the band) Atom Heart Mother (a collaboration with composer Ron Geesin) and More (a film soundtrack) were erratic each contained some extremely effective musicnnBy the early '70s Syd Barrett was a fading or nonexistent memory for most of Pink Floyd's fans although the group one could argue never did match the brilliance of that somewhat anomalous 1967 debut Meddle (1971) sharpened the band's sprawling epics into something more accessible and polished the science fiction ambience that the group had been exploring ever since 1968 Nothing however prepared Pink Floyd or their audience for the massive mainstream success of their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon which made their brand of cosmic rock even more approachable with state-of-the-art production more focused songwriting an army of well-time stereophonic sound effects and touches of saxophone and soulful female backup vocalsnnDark Side of the Moon finally broke Pink Floyd as superstars in the United States where it made number one More astonishingly it made them one of the biggest-selling acts of all time Dark Side of the Moon spent an incomprehensible 741 weeks on the Billboard album chart Additionally the primarily instrumental textures of the songs helped make Dark Side of the Moon easily translatable on an international level and the record became (and still is) one of the most popular rock albums worldwidennIt was also an extremely hard act to follow although the follow-up Wish You Were Here (1975) also made number one highlighted by a tribute of sorts to the long-departed Barrett Shine On You Crazy Diamond Dark Side of the Moon had been dominated by lyrical themes of insecurity fear and the cold sterility of modern life Wish You Were Here and Animals (1977) developed these morose themes even more explicitly By this time Waters was taking a firm hand over Pink Floyd's lyrical and musical vision which was consolidated by The Wall (1979)nnThe bleak overambitious double concept album concerned itself with the material and emotional walls modern humans build around themselves for survival The Wall was a huge success (even by Pink Floyd's standards) in part because the music was losing some of its heavy-duty electronic textures in favor of more approachable pop elements Although Pink Floyd had rarely even released singles since the late '60s one of the tracks Another Brick in the Wall became a transatlantic number one The band had been launching increasingly elaborate stage shows throughout the '70s but the touring production of The Wall featuring a construction of an actual wall during the band's performance was the most excessive yetnnIn the 1980s the group began to unravel Each of the four had done some side and solo projects in the past more troublingly Waters was asserting control of the band's musical and lyrical identity That wouldn't have been such a problem had The Final Cut (1983) been such an unimpressive Hera the Greek goddess called the Queen of Heaven was a powerful queen in her own right long before her marriage to Zeus the mighty king of the Olympian gods The goddess Hera ruled over the heavens and the earth responsible for every aspect of existence including the seasons and the weather Honoring her great capacity to nurture the world her very name translates as the Great Lady Our word galaxy comes from the Greek word gala meaning mother's milk legend has it that the Milky Way was formed from the milk spurting from the breasts of the Greek goddess Hera Queen of Heaven Where drops fell to earth fields of lilies sprung forth She was also worshipped as the Roman goddess Juno and the month of June (which is the most popular month for weddings) is named in her honor It is partly on account of Hera's great beauty and particularly her beautiful large eyes that she is linked to her sacred animal the cow and also the peacock with its iridescent feathers having eyes The cow symbolizes the goddess Hera's nurturing watchfulness over her subjects while the peacock symbolizes her luxury beauty and immortality In ancient times Hera was revered as being the only one the Greek goddesses who accompanied a woman through every step of her life The goddess Hera blessed and protected a woman's marriage bringing her fertility protecting her children and helping her find financial security Hera was in short a complete woman overseeing both private and public affairs But it was Hera's uncommon beauty that attracted the attention of her future husband the lusty Zeus who tricked Hera into taking him to her breast by changing himself into a small frightened and wounded bird that elicited her pity Once cradled in Hera's bosom Zeus changed back into his manly form and tried to take her but she resisted his advances putting him off until he promised to marry her The delay only increased his desire for Hera and once married they had the longest honeymoon on record lasting over 300 years nfortunately the goddess Hera's life was not to remain so enviable Once the honeymoon was over Zeus reverted to his earlier playboy lifestyle married or not compulsively seducing or raping whichever of the Greek goddesses or mortal women caught his wandering eye His amorous exploits left the regal goddess Hera feeling betrayed and humiliated on numerous occasions To make matters even worse Zeus often showed more favor towards the offspring of his illicit liaisons than he did to the children Hera bore him In Greek mythology Hera although wounded remained faithful and steadfast in her loyalty to Zeus electing instead to vent her fury on the other women rather than Zeus himself even though it was usually Zeus who had deceived seduced or raped the innocent women This wasn't always Hera's reaction however On one occasion she decided to give Zeus a taste of his own medicine by conceiving and delivering a child by herself proving that she really didn't need him anyway It didn't work out quite as she'd hoped She gave birth as the sole parent to Hephaestus (God of the Forge) who was born with a deformity that made him lame Zeus was not impressed and Hera rejected her son sending him away from Mount Olympus to grow up among the mortals At other times in reaction to his continuing infidelities the goddess Hera simply withdrew from Zeus and the other Olympian gods and goddesses and wandered around the earth often in darkness always eventually ending up back at the home where she'd spend her happy youth In spite of how he had mistreated her Zeus did love Hera and more than that felt as if part of himself was missing when she was not there for him Once panicked that Hera didn't seem to be in any hurry to return this time he invited her to a mock marriage ceremony that he'd arranged to a princess near her home She couldn't help but be amused to discover him making his vows not to a princess but a statue Hera's laughter broke the ice and she forgave him and returned to Mount Olympus to resume her role as wife and queen It is unfortunate that it is not the goddess Hera's nurturing or her steadfastness in the face of adversity that are remembered today but mostly the stories of her jealousy and vindictiveness Some historians argue that the goddess Hera was unjustly portrayed in the famous stories of Homer probably because he was himself victimized by a mean and shrewish wife More than any of the other Greek goddesses the goddess Hera reminds us that there is both light and dark within each of us and that joy and pain are inextricably linked in life The Greek goddess Hera represents the fullness of life and affirms that we can use our own wisdom in the pursuit of any goal we choose

Ok so this isnt a picture of me with a band but this is one of my favorite photos ever Not just because of the shot but because of the circumstances surrounding it In 1996 (or maybe 97) it was announced that the original line up of Black Sabbath were going to be hitting the road again kicking the whole thing off in Phoenix Arizona These two guys I used to hang around with had a grandmother in Phoenix so we decided to fly out there stay with her for free and go to the show Phoenix is hot hot and uncomfortable and theres very little to do n nThe three of us were staying with a grandmother so it wasnt like we could do much at her house either At first we got a kick out of driving to the Mall being a city boy Malls are always fun to go to You walk around in the climate control and watch all the Happy Consumers putter around in a capitalistic frenzy That quickly got boring so we headed up to the big Meteor Crater to get a really good view of what a huge hole in the ground looks like n nAt the crater the three of us proved how big of dorks we were by pretending to be Jeff Bridges in Starman before retiring back to their Grandmothers house for dinner The next night was the show so we piled into the car and headed out This was a big time event because it wasnt just Sabbath but also Pantera Megadeth and a couple of other bands whose names I can't remember The facility itself was huge and we got rushed in the back because a friend of ours knew the bouncers there The first big surprise of the night was that the bouncers had also gotten in a large batch of their extremely hot stripper friends You have to love bouncers and security guys simply on the fact that they always know strippers and strippers who are off duty are pretty excited to just not be half naked These girls were not only very friendly but also very inebriated so they were all about being overly affectionate n nDont get me wrong nobody was banging in the bathroom but it was still a good time and these girls were hot We sat through Pantera which was difficult due to the fact that Phil wouldnt stop giving speeches for more than half of the set The stage was kind of far away but I couldve sworn I saw Dimebag roll his eyes After Pantera Megadeth took the stage and that was cool because Dave and the band did what seemed like a greatest hits list Megadeth ended and the stage started getting set for Sabbath n nSuddenly across the way I saw this bright tattoo that looked oddly familiar I started moving towards it noticing that it was a complete back piece and that the center of it was a man with his fist raised above his head and what looked like a sword As I got closer to the tattoo I couldnt believe my eyes at what was taking shape Somebody some actual human being decided to get the entire cover of Manowars album Kings Of Metal on their back It was incredible it was the entire cover and such detail that whoever had it done mustve been at it for months This was dedication this was somebody who worshiped Manowar and I just couldnt believe this was actually happening n nWhat happened next was a complete surprise I figured I had to talk tot he guy who had this tattoo if only to ask him why Dont get me wrong I wasnt there to laugh I love Manowar but that was usually met with ridicule Here was a guy who obviously loved Manowar to and way way more than I did When I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned around I was taken aback I figured it would be some pasty white metalhead kid but instead is was an older Mexican guy with short hair I told him I thought his tattoo as amazing and he said Thank you thank you very much Now it wasnt his response that surprised me but the fact that he sounded exactly like Elvis Presley I was standing in front of a man with a giant Manowar tattoo who was talking to me like Elvis Presley I began to think I was having an acid flashback I got my bearings back and asked him if I can take a picture of the back piece He smiled and said Of course man were all brothers of metal n nSo I snapped the photo thanked him and went back to strippers and Sabbath The rest of the night was awesome Sabbath kicked much ass and I even got most of the direct attention from one of the pretty blond strippers After the show I tossed the disposable camera into my bag and forgot about it Several months later I re-discovered it and got the photos developed when I saw this photo I freaked because Id forgotten all about the tattoo So thats my Manowar tattoo story I still cant believe it really happened

A transitional album on which the band moved from Syd Barrett's relatively concise and vivid songs to spacy ethereal material with lengthy instrumental passages Barrett's influence is still felt (he actually did manage to contribute one track the jovial Jugband Blues) and much of the material retains a gentle fairy-tale ambience Remember a Day and See Saw are highlights on Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun Let There Be More Light and the lengthy instrumental title track the band begin to map out the dark and repetitive pulses that would characterize their next few recordsnnPink Floyd is the premier space rock band Since the mid-'60s their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical operatic quality in both sound and words Despite their astral image the group was brought down to earth in the 1980s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and ultimately ownership of the band's very name After that time they were little more than a dinosaur act capable of filling stadiums and topping the charts but offering little more than a spectacular recreation of their most successful formulas Their latter-day staleness cannot disguise the fact that for the first decade or so of their existence they were one of the most innovative groups around in concert and (especially) in the studionnWhile Pink Floyd are mostly known for their grandiose concept albums of the 1970s they started as a very different sort of psychedelic band Soon after they first began playing together in the mid-'60s they fell firmly under the leadership of lead guitarist Syd Barrett the gifted genius who would write and sing most of their early material The Cambridge native shared the stage with Roger Waters (bass) Rick Wright (keyboards) and Nick Mason (drums) The name Pink Floyd seemingly so far-out was actually derived from the first names of two ancient bluesmen (Pink Anderson and Floyd Council) And at first Pink Floyd were much more conventional than the act into which they would evolve concentrating on the rock and RampB material that were so common to the repertoires of mid-'60s British bandsnnPink Floyd quickly began to experiment however stretching out songs with wild instrumental freak-out passages incorporating feedback electronic screeches and unusual eerie sounds created by loud amplification reverb and such tricks as sliding ball bearings up and down guitar strings In 1966 they began to pick up a following in the London underground on-stage they began to incorporate light shows to add to the psychedelic effect Most importantly Syd Barrett began to compose pop-psychedelic gems that combined unusual psychedelic arrangements (particularly in the haunting guitar and celestial organ licks) with catchy melodies and incisive lyrics that viewed the world with a sense of poetic childlike wondernnThe group landed a recording contract with EMI in early 1967 and made the Top 20 with a brilliant debut single Arnold Layne a sympathetic comic vignette about a transvestite The follow-up the kaleidoscopic See Emily Play made the Top Ten The debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn also released in 1967 may have been the greatest British psychedelic album other than Sgt Pepper's Dominated almost wholly by Barrett's songs the album was a charming fun house of driving mysterious rockers (Lucifer Sam) odd character sketches (The Gnome) childhood flashbacks (Bike Matilda Mother) and freakier pieces with lengthy instrumental passages (Astronomy Domine Interstellar Overdrive Pow R Toch) that mapped out their fascination with space travel The record was not only like no other at the time it was like no other that Pink Floyd would make colored as it was by a vision that was far more humorous pop-friendly and lighthearted than those of their subsequent epicsnnThe reason Pink Floyd never made a similar album was that Piper was the only one to be recorded under Barrett's leadership Around mid-1967 the prodigy began showing increasingly alarming signs of mental instability Barrett would go catatonic on-stage playing music that had little to do with the material or not playing at all An American tour had to be cut short when he was barely able to function at all let alone play the pop star game Dependent upon Barrett for most of their vision and material the rest of the group was nevertheless finding him impossible to work with live or in the studionnAround the beginning of 1968 guitarist Dave Gilmour a friend of the band who was also from Cambridge was brought in as a fifth member The idea was that Gilmour would enable the Floyd to continue as a live outfit Barrett would still be able to write and contribute to the records That couldn't work either and within a few months Barrett was out of the group Pink Floyd's management looking at the wreckage of a band that was now without its lead guitarist lead singer and primary songwriter decided to abandon the group and manage Barrett as a solo actnnSuch calamities would have proven insurmountable for 99 out of 100 bands in similar predicaments Incredibly Pink Floyd would regroup and not only maintain their popularity but eventually become even more successful It was early in the game yet after all the first album had made the British Top Ten but the group was still virtually unknown in America where the loss of Syd Barrett meant nothing to the media Gilmour was an excellent guitarist and the band proved capable of writing enough original material to generate further ambitious albums Waters eventually emerging as the dominant composer The 1968 follow-up to Piper at the Gates of Dawn A Saucerful of Secrets made the British Top Ten using Barrett's vision as an obvious blueprint but taking a more formal somber and quasi-classical tone especially in the long instrumental parts Barrett for his part would go on to make a couple of interesting solo records before his mental problems instigated a retreat into oblivionnnOver the next four years Pink Floyd would continue to polish their brand of experimental rock which married psychedelia with ever-grander arrangements on a Wagnerian operatic scale Hidden underneath the pulsing reverberant organs and guitars and insistently restated themes were subtle blues and pop influences that kept the material accessible to a wide audience Abandoning the singles market they concentrated on album-length works and built a huge following in the progressive rock underground with constant touring in both Europe and North America While LPs like Ummagumma (divided into live recordings and experimental outings by each member of the band) Atom Heart Mother (a collaboration with composer Ron Geesin) and More (a film soundtrack) were erratic each contained some extremely effective musicnnBy the early '70s Syd Barrett was a fading or nonexistent memory for most of Pink Floyd's fans although the group one could argue never did match the brilliance of that somewhat anomalous 1967 debut Meddle (1971) sharpened the band's sprawling epics into something more accessible and polished the science fiction ambience that the group had been exploring ever since 1968 Nothing however prepared Pink Floyd or their audience for the massive mainstream success of their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon which made their brand of cosmic rock even more approachable with state-of-the-art production more focused songwriting an army of well-time stereophonic sound effects and touches of saxophone and soulful female backup vocalsnnDark Side of the Moon finally broke Pink Floyd as superstars in the United States where it made number one More astonishingly it made them one of the biggest-selling acts of all time Dark Side of the Moon spent an incomprehensible 741 weeks on the Billboard album chart Additionally the primarily instrumental textures of the songs helped make Dark Side of the Moon easily translatable on an international level and the record became (and still is) one of the most popular rock albums worldwidennIt was also an extremely hard act to follow although the follow-up Wish You Were Here (1975) also made number one highlighted by a tribute of sorts to the long-departed Barrett Shine On You Crazy Diamond Dark Side of the Moon had been dominated by lyrical themes of insecurity fear and the cold sterility of modern life Wish You Were Here and Animals (1977) developed these morose themes even more explicitly By this time Waters was taking a firm hand over Pink Floyd's lyrical and musical vision which was consolidated by The Wall (1979)nnThe bleak overambitious double concept album concerned itself with the material and emotional walls modern humans build around themselves for survival The Wall was a huge success (even by Pink Floyd's standards) in part because the music was losing some of its heavy-duty electronic textures in favor of more approachable pop elements Although Pink Floyd had rarely even released singles since the late '60s one of the tracks Another Brick in the Wall became a transatlantic number one The band had been launching increasingly elaborate stage shows throughout the '70s but the touring production of The Wall featuring a construction of an actual wall during the band's performance was the most excessive yetnnIn the 1980s the group began to unravel Each of the four had done some side and solo projects in the past more troublingly Waters was asserting control of the band's musical and lyrical identity That wouldn't have been such a problem had The Final Cut (1983) been such an unimpressive effort with little of the electronic innovation so typical of their previous work Shortly afterward the band split up -- for a while In 1986 Waters was suing Gilmour and Mason to dissolve the group's partnership (Wright had lost full membership status entirely) Waters lost leaving a Roger-less Pink Floyd to get a Top Five album with Momentary Lapse of Reason in 1987 In an irony that was nothing less than cosmic about 20 years after Pink Floyd shed their original leader to resume their career with great commercial success they would do the same again to his successor Waters released ambitious solo albums to nothing more than moderate sales and attention while he watched his former colleagues (with Wright back in tow) rescale the chartsnnPink Floyd still had a huge fan base but there's little that's noteworthy about their post-Waters output They knew their formula could execute it on a grand scale and could count on millions of customers -- many of them unborn when Dark Side of the Moon came out and unaware that Syd Barrett was ever a member -- to buy their records and see their sporadic tours The Division Bell their first studio album in seven years topped the charts in 1994 without making any impact on the current rock scene except in a marketing sense Ditto for the live Pulse album recorded during a typically elaborately staged 1994 tour which included a concert version of The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety Waters' solo career sputtered along highlighted by a solo recreation of The Wall performed at the site of the former Berlin Wall in 1990 and released as an album Syd Barrett continued to be completely removed from the public eye except as a sort of archetype for the fallen genius

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion His frequent hurricane blasts of noise and dazzling showmanship -- he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth and set his guitar on fire -- has sometimes obscured his considerable gifts as a songwriter singer and master of a gamut of blues RB and rock stylesnnWhen Hendrix became an international superstar in 1967 it seemed as if he'd dropped out of a Martian spaceship but in fact he'd served his apprenticeship the long mundane way in numerous RB acts on the chitlin circuit During the early and mid-'60s he worked with such RBsoul greats as Little Richard the Isley Brothers and King Curtis as a backup guitarist Occasionally he recorded as a session man (the Isley Brothers' 1964 single Testify is the only one of these early tracks that offers even a glimpse of his future genius) But the stars didn't appreciate his show-stealing showmanship and Hendrix was straight-jacketed by sideman roles that didn't allow him to develop as a soloist The logical step was for Hendrix to go out on his own which he did in New York in the mid-'60s playing with various musicians in local clubs and joining white blues-rock singer John Hammond Jr's band for a whilennIt was in a New York club that Hendrix was spotted by Animals bassist Chas Chandler The first lineup of the Animals was about to split and Chandler looking to move into management convinced Hendrix to move to London and record as a solo act in England There a group was built around Jimi also featuring Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass that was dubbed the Jimi Hendrix Experience The trio became stars with astonishing speed in the UK where Hey Joe Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary all made the Top Ten in the first half of 1967 These tracks were also featured on their debut album Are You Experienced a psychedelic meisterwerk that became a huge hit in the US after Hendrix created a sensation at the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967nnAre You Experienced was an astonishing debut particularly from a young RB veteran who had rarely sung and apparently never written his own material before the Experience formed What caught most people's attention at first was his virtuosic guitar playing which employed an arsenal of devices including wah-wah pedals buzzing feedback solos crunching distorted riffs and lightning liquid runs up and down the scales But Hendrix was also a first-rate songwriter melding cosmic imagery with some surprisingly pop-savvy hooks and tender sentiments He was also an excellent blues interpreter and passionate engaging singer (although his gruff throaty vocal pipes were not nearly as great assets as his instrumental skills) Are You Experienced was psychedelia at its most eclectic synthesizing mod pop soul RB Dylan and the electric guitar innovations of British pioneers like Jeff Beck Pete Townshend and Eric ClaptonnnAmazingly Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime Axis: Bold as Love and the double-LP Electric Ladyland were more diffuse and experimental than Are You Experienced On Electric Ladyland in particular Hendrix pioneered the use of the studio itself as a recording instrument manipulating electronics and devising overdub techniques (with the help of engineer Eddie Kramer in particular) to plot uncharted sonic territory Not that these albums were perfect as impressive as they were the instrumental breaks could meander and Hendrix's songwriting was occasionally half-baked never matching the consistency of Are You Experienced (although he exercised greater creative control over the later albums)nnThe final two years of Hendrix's life were turbulent ones musically financially and personally He was embroiled in enough complicated management and record company disputes (some dating from ill-advised contracts he'd signed before the Experience formed) to keep the lawyers busy for years He disbanded the Experience in 1969 forming the Band of Gypsies with drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox to pursue funkier directions He closed Woodstock with a sprawling shaky set redeemed by his famous machine-gun interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner The rhythm section of Mitchell and Redding were underrated keys to Jimi's best work and the Band of Gypsies ultimately couldn't measure up to the same standard although Hendrix did record an erratic live album with them In early 1970 the Experience re-formed again -- and disbanded again shortly afterward At the same time Hendrix felt torn in many directions by various fellow musicians record-company expectations and management pressures all of whom had their own ideas of what Hendrix should be doing Coming up on two years after Electric Ladyland a new studio album had yet to appear although Hendrix was recording constantly during the periodnnWhile outside parties did contribute to bogging down Hendrix's studio work it also seems likely that Jimi himself was partly responsible for the stalemate unable to form a permanent lineup of musicians unable to decide what musical direction to pursue unable to bring himself to complete another album despite jamming endlessly A few months into 1970 Mitchell -- Hendrix's most valuable musical collaborator -- came back into the fold replacing Miles in the drum chair although Cox stayed in place It was this trio that toured the world during Hendrix's final monthsnnIt's extremely difficult to separate the facts of Hendrix's life from rumors and speculation Everyone who knew him well or claimed to know him well has different versions of his state of mind in 1970 Critics have variously mused that he was going to go into jazz that he was going to get deeper into the blues that he was going to continue doing what he was doing or that he was too confused to know what he was doing at all The same confusion holds true for his death: contradictory versions of his final days have been given by his closest acquaintances of the time He'd been working intermittently on a new album tentatively titled First Ray of the New Rising Sun when he died in London on September 18 1970 from drug-related complicationsnnHendrix recorded a massive amount of unreleased studio material during his lifetime Much of this (as well as entire live concerts) was issued posthumously several of the live concerts were excellent but the studio tapes have been the focus of enormous controversy for over 20 years These initially came out in haphazard drabs and drubs (the first The Cry of Love was easily the most outstanding of the lot) In the mid-'70s producer Alan Douglas took control of these projects posthumously overdubbing many of Hendrix's tapes with additional parts by studio musicians In the eyes of many Hendrix fans this was sacrilege destroying the integrity of the work of a musician known to exercise meticulous care over the final production of his studio recordings Even as late as 1995 Douglas was having ex-Knack drummer Bruce Gary record new parts for the typically misbegotten compilation Voodoo Soup After a lengthy legal dispute the rights to Hendrix's estate including all of his recordings returned to Al Hendrix the guitarist's father in July of 1995nnWith the help of Jimi's step-sister Janie Al set up Experience Hendrix to begin to get Jimi's legacy in order They began by hiring John McDermott and Jimi's original engineer Eddie Kramer to oversee the remastering process They were able to find all the original master tapes which had never been used for previous CD releases and in April of 1997 Hendrix's first three albums were reissued with drastically improved sound Accompanying those reissues was a posthumous compilation album (based on Jimi's handwritten track listings) called First Rays of the New Rising Sun made up of tracks from the Cry of Love Rainbow Bridge and War HeroesnnLater in 1997 another compilation called South Saturn Delta showed up collecting more tracks from posthumous LPs like Crash Landing War Heroes and Rainbow Bridge (without the terrible '70s overdubs) along with a handful of never-before-heard material that Chas Chandler had withheld from Alan Douglas for all those yearsnnMore archival material followed Radio One was basically expanded to the two-disc BBC Sessions (released in 1998) and 1999 saw the release of the full show from Woodstock as well as additional concert recordings from the Band of Gypsies shows entitled Live at the Fillmore East 2000 saw the release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience four-disc box set which compiled remaining tracks from In the West Crash Landing and Rainbow Bridge along with letting one arm loose reaching over and stroaking his newborn dragon He then lays back his knees still bent up with his back against the rock He puts his hands behind his head and smiles up at the stars Kiari: sits in a tree gazing out at the lake She loses balance momentarily and falls out of the tree Bailey: He hears the commoion from behind him He streaches back abit to look over at the girl upsidedown He smiles at her his hands still behind his head He calls over to her from his rock You alright there m'lady Kiari: blushes and fixes her dress hoping he didn't see up her skirt I am fine Bailey: He continues to look over at her He closes his eyes and shakes his head Kiari: turns bright red What are you laughing about lowers her head embarrassed Bailey: He withdrawls back to his normal the attention Bailey: He finally gets next to her to where thier shoulders are almost touching He looks the opposite direction then quickly turns to her and kisses he on the cheek Turning away once as befor He goes back to his usual swawying and acting like he is not paying attention Kiari: giggles Don't think I don't notice leans over and kisses him on the cheek Bailey: He flushes a bright shade of red as she kisses him He rubs the back of his neck in embarrasment Well Um I didn't think you did Kiari: pouts cutely How could I not notice kisses him again Bailey: He blushes even more then befor Loving every moment of it though He leans over kisses her for a few moments on the cheek then withdrawls just abit to whisper in her ear I don't know Kiari: bites her lower lip trying not to giggle her cheeks turning red again Bailey: He walks casually around her in a circle a few times eyeing her On about the second time around her he stops behind her and walks up behind her and slips his hands around her waist from behind He puts his head on her shoulder Kiari: turns her head slightly and looks into his eyes her lips accidentally bumping his chin Bailey: He continues to hold her closely to himself from behind He smiles at her as she looks at him Kiari: blushes unable to take her eyes off him Bailey: He starts to sway a little from side to side still holding her closly and in my room he walks twards the door and opens and shuts it but with out going He wondered if she would talk to herself about him curious about what she may say Kiari: sighs in frustration Way to go Kiari Way to freak him out He is probably so repulsed by me Bailey: he stands at the door unmoving with his hand on the knob Seeing if she will say more Kiari: Why did I do that It is none of my business what he is thinking anyway sits down on the floor letting the water hit her head and drip in her face Bailey: He shows no emotion on the out side but on the inside it is killing him to listen to her saddness Kiari: sighs again and turns off the water Bailey: he is stuck between leaving and staying his body telling him to stay but his mind telling him to go He is frozen Kiari: sticks her Who doesn't love this one When you still see people going out of their way to get this thing even though it is nowhere near the caliber of current weapons you know you have a truly awesome weapon on your hands I've always liked this weapon but I really feel that Blizzard didn't pay enough attention to it and make it feel truly legendary Well that is now a thing of the past and Thunderfury has joined the ranks of the elite Beyond the obvious level 85 stat increase I gave her the modern treatment and added some much needed flavor text and created a brand new inventory iconnThat old generic one just degraded the feeling of a weapon that is supposed to be legend in my opinion With that said and my small rant concluded we are ready to move on in our journey Druids rejoice The next weapon is for you: Atiesh nGreatstaff of the Guardian

emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday He was also a superb keyboard player arranger and bandleader The brilliance of his 1950s and '60s work however can't obscure the fact that he made few classic tracks after the mid-'60s though he recorded often and performed until the year before his deathnnBlind since the age of six (from glaucoma) Charles studied composition and learned many instruments at the St Augustine School for the Deaf and the Blind His parents had died by his early teens and he worked as a musician in when turning a corner in the path she came across a stranger laying slumped against the trunk of an oak The young woman turned to view the path back from whence she had come and peered squinting in the half light into the forest yet it appeared that he was alonenVisitors to this part of the woods were rare although she had occasionally had to chase off the odd hunter who had thought to gather wolf pelts or lumberjacks who had been eying her trees Eying the size of this one she concluded if it were a lumberjack twas grossly undersized Intending to shake the stranger awake and move him on his way she approached and reached out to shake his shoulder lightlynThe heat struck her hand though it was yet inches away and she hesitated a moment before rolling him over gently to gasp for the front of his tunic was soaked with blood and gore and as his cloak fell away it revealed a deep slash from shoulder to wrist running almost parallels to the strange tattoos lining his forearmsnA groan injury requiring draining several times as his body fought the lingering infection and though she introduced herself he still tended to name her his angel and eventually she gave up trying to convince him to use her name She herself was weakened by the casting she had undertaken and she found that she was no longer able to cast as she once had her connection to the forest weakened Jayce as she had discovered him to be named suggested she accompany him to Tir Magnus and consult with the Lore Keepers there and she agreed strangely reluctant to see him part The month was spent preparing a collection of herbs to take with her and the repairing of his clothes which she had damaged in order to tend his wounds In quiet nights spent before the fire she worked on the tree limb whittling away bark and slight knots in its length At the last she inscribed runes of the forest carving them painstakingly into the flesh of the staff and binding them carefully nTogether they set out and together they approached a temple of Gaia and were married under the light of the full moon before continuing on to Tir Magnus

Infineon Raceway April 11 2008nnIts quiet tonight under this hill in Sonoma A few lights gleam and the faint tink-tink-tink of a hammer sounds from some hidden pit area where work continues as it always does on a race car Bright stars look down on a few early arrivals and the air is redolent of hay and the sea All through the night the transporters pull in towing their brightly colored cars Theyve come from Oregon Utah Nevada and all parts of California to become a part of this temporary community to see old friends to make new ones to race Dawn reveals a small village sprung up over night There are streets traffic pedestrians wives sweethearts kids and dogs Cars of all descriptions from daily drivers to factory sponsored racecars have become the focus of attention as they are prepared to go on track An air of festivity prevails over this day at the races but an undercurrent of the potential for violence and wreckage is present as well as the tow truck rumbles slowly around the perimeter like a bright red velociraptor tail high looking for preynnOne of the best things about a NASA event is that there is something for everyone You can bring your daily driver and run a High Performance Driving Event Anything will do as long as its roadworthy and safe Looking out my door once I saw a Ford GT40 a GMC pickup a Toyota Camry a Porsche GT3 and a Mini Cooper S all lined up to go out in HPDE 1 As your experience and driving skills improve you can bring your modded up street machine change to race wheels and tires and run with the faster HPDE groups 2 3 and 4 Some folks have been happily doing this for years Since these are non-competitive instructional driving events with instructors on board your insurance should cover any mishaps (NOTE: check with your own provider to be sure) In addition there are many classes of racing to watch featuring exciting door-to-door competition Add to that a free barbeque Saturday night and youve got a really fine weekend at This will be my first official race with the US Touring Car Championship and I look forward to hitting the grid with more horsepower and quicker lap times Alas it is not to be Ive fallen victim to modomania something I have been warning people about for years on the Mini forums Change one thing at a time Ive said otherwise you wont have a clue if something goes wrong Youd think Id listen Instead we made five changes to the engine and the ECU does not like it Horsepower has actually gone down But Im stuck with it for the weekend so Ill do the best I can break the tires in well and fix it before the next event Even with the car being slow I manage to wheel it around to within a second of my fastest lap at Sears PointnnBob Scheer is back with his Ireland Engineering MCS Bob is way faster than me but because hes not used to the track we qualify close and were side by side on the grid for the race Finally in the late afternoon our turn to race arrives The track is hot under a warm California sun and a little greasy with all the rubber that has been laid down today Caution will be called for at the off-camber Turn 2 and the braking zone for the hairpin Turn 11 USTCC goes out first for the warmup lap then pulls up by startfinish for the standing start The furled green flag goes up (engines rev) it is unfurled up high (cars seem to lean forward in anticipation) it drops and the air is filled with the sound of roaring engines and screeching tires as the field blasts off for Turn 1nnAll except me In all the excitement and adrenaline flow I make the same mistake I did at Pahrump I catch the detent to reverse on my attempted one-two shift and cant find second gear expletive deleted Rookie mistake The field streams by me on both sides and by the time I get it going Im behind the Honda Challenge cars The Civic in front of me is just a little slower than me and is braking just a little sooner I pull up next to him several times but Im running with the pirates now They show no mercy and give no quarter and I just dont have the skills yet to shoulder my way by and get awaynnAnd so I finish last In spite of the embarrassing start it was far from a wasted effort I have completed two more events as a provisional rookie racer without incident or going off track One more and I can apply for my NASA National racing license and the gloves can come off Before that happens though I have homework to do I have to find more horsepower for the car and I have to practice standing starts until that 1-2 shift is automatic Next time will be differentnnIt was great to have some of you Mini owners at the track cheering us on Next time at Thunderhill on May 3-4 Bob and I should be joined on the grid by Rich Peterson in his USTCC MCS Hopefully as more Minis join the racing we will see more of you out there too
