I read the Globe and Mail especially during the election coverage I enjoy the fact that it doesn't seem biased unlike the Bells and Whistles of other papers However I read it one day later than it is published because I take the office copy and read it on the TTC at the end of the day However it's the paper that we get back home in NB I read everything except the sports section the business section only because I have to cut out articles for the partners at work

Max Ehrmann was born in Terre Haute Indiana on September 26 1872 He was the fifth and last child of Maximilian Ehrmann Sr and Margaret Barbara Lutz Ehrmann both of whom emigrated to the United States in the late 1840s from Bavaria Germany Ehrmann received his early education from the Terre Haute Fourth District School and the German Methodist Church Between 189094 he attended De Pauw University in Greencastle Indiana While at De Pauw Ehrmann became editor of the school newspaper Depauw Weekly Upon graduation Ehrmann studied law and philosophy at Harvard and edited The Rainbow a national college fraternity magazine While at Harvard he also published his first book A Farrago in 1898 Returning to Terre Haute in 1898 Ehrmann practiced law as Deputy States Attorney for two years He then worked for a number of years as credit manager and attorney for his brother's manufacturing business At the age of 40 Ehrmann left the family business and returned to writing fulltime Throughout his career he wrote more than 20 books and pamphlets and many essays and poems that were published separately in newspapers and magazines His most acclaimed work was Desiderata originally published in 1927 This prosepoem brought Ehrmann national attention because of its identification with Adelai Stevenson and because of the confusion regarding its copyright and authorship Desiderata has been published in numerous magazines newspapers and anthologies and was produced as a single record by Warner Brothers in 1971 Max Ehrmann died September 9 1945

Manchester Evening NewsWednesday June 2 2004GO24Guitarist Tim's on the write track but without any words TIM SCOTT I get confused by words I never listen to the lyrics of songs and have no idea what they are going on aboutStockport's Tim Scott is one of the most talented electric guitarists of his generation His debut album Bald On The Inside drew rave reviews and prompted comparisons with such American plankspanking giants as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai So why is he busking in a bookstore near you PAUL TAYLOR explainsWHEN Tim Scott tells you he sees his music as colours he is not just using a figure of speech There are chords which I say 'That's a certain colour he explains Music does conjure something visual for meWords on the other hand tend to slip away from him For Tim aged 32 has mastered his music only while battling with severe dyslexia Despite being a graduate of London's prestigious Guitar Institute he still has problems with musical notation just as he has always struggled with the written word I found reading music very hard he says I understand music but it is as though I can't see it I can't feed it through the brain to the fingers fast enoughNow he has another battle on his hands to gain acceptance from a music industry more interested in quick hits and pretty young things than musical excellenceHe has written played recorded produced packaged and even distributed his debut album Bald On The Inside from a home studio in the converted dining room of his Hazel Grove homeHe has also marketed the disc through Borders bookshops where he gives promotional performances a kind of indoors busking to generate CD salesHis music rock instrumentals tinged with jazz blues Latin and classical influences has seen him hailed in guitar magazines as a worldclass talent and one of his pieces is set to be included on the CD accompanying the July edition of Guitarist magazine But as yet he is without a proper record dealIt has got to be an instant hit which they can fly around the world with a video or nothing at all Tim glumly remarks of the music business Inspired by the likes of Toto Yes and Van Halen Tim cut his teeth on guitar as a teenager But at the same time his dyslexia meant he struggled his way through Hazel Grove High SchoolStockport education authority did not recognise it at the time as a disability so I did not really get any help through school apart from some of my English teachers giving me extra classes after school out of the kindness of their hearts says Tim That helped me get four or five GCSE passesHe went on to Salford College of Music but dropped out before I got kicked out I could not cope with the written work I find it difficult even to hold down an ordinary job I lost jobs in shops because I could not do my ABCsTim worked in bars played in covers bands then in 1992 went to the Guitar Institute He won a diploma after 12 months but the dyslexia hampered his chances of returning for further studiesI had a breakdown and was ill for two or three years says Tim Out of that I kept playing guitar and ended up setting up a teaching business I got that to a good level and then invested the money in making the recordAmid all the dextrous guitar work other sounds used on the album include that of a domestic egg slicer a human heartbeat whirring fridge and revving motorcycles But these are songs without wordsThe reason I do instrumental music is that words do not mean a lot to me says Tim I get confused by words I never listen to the lyrics of songs and have no idea what they are going on about and when I try to write songs with people it is as if someone turns off the creative tapTim performs at Borders book store Peel Retail Park Great Portwood Street Stockport on Friday at 7pm and The Late Room Peter Street Manchester on Saturday July 17 Bald On The Inside is available through Borders stores More on Tim at wwwacerestudioscomBy Paul Taylor

Baby Eaglemade in IsraelIMI Semiauto double action pistol Caliber 9mm Luger 17rds magazine THIS PISTOL is for SALE or TRADE During the early nineties the stateowned Israel Military Industries IMI company developed a conventional combat pistol the Jericho 941 This was actually an international effort since the design of the pistol was based on the Italian Tanfoglio system itself a wellmade clone of the Czechoslovak Cz75 pistol The original model index the 941 came from the two calibers initially available in this pistol the ubiquitous 9mm Luger 9x19 and the new 41AE which was developed in 1986 by the American company Action Arms This cartridge which was ballistically similar to more modern 40 SW was designed to be used in 9mm pistols with minimal modifications new barrel and return spring and possibly new magazine and thus had a rebated rim of the same diameter as the 9mm cartridge Early Jericho pistols were often shipped with two sets of barrels and springs one in 9mm and another in 41AE The 41 was good cartridge by no means inferior to the rival 40 SW but it lacked one essential feature strong marketing support Because of the failure to sell this caliber to the public the 41AE has been dropped from Jericho line and replaced by more successful 40 SW chambering and later on complemented with 45ACP Jericho pistols are widely exported from Israel and also used by Israeli private security and police forces Manufacture of the Jericho pistols has been commenced with the great help and probably certain parts from famous Tanfoglio company of Italy not surprisingly design of Jericho pistols is similar to that of Tanfoglio pistols and based on famous Czechoslovak CZ75 One specific aspect of the Jericho pistols is that it has been imported in various countries most notably the USA under a variety of names other than its original one Its main US importer the Magnum Research Co imported these pistols under trade marks like Baby Eagle Baby Desert Eagle and even Desert Eagle trying to capitalize on the commercial success of the much bigger and entirely different Desert Eagle pistol also made in Israel by IMI and marketed by Magnum Research It must be noted that unlike the original Desert Eagle which is more of a hunting weapon the Jericho is a true combat selfdefence weapon comfortable to handle carry and fire as well as reliable and accurate It must be noted that recently the small arms business of IMI has been privatized and Jericho pistols are currently made by IWI Israeli Weapon Industries Ltd Jericho 941 are locked breech short recoil operated pistols which are available with either a steel all models or polymer frame only compact and semicompact models Locking is of the conventional Browning type with camcontrolled barrel tilting and dual locking lugs located on the barrel just ahead of the chamber area The slide rails are located inside the frame as in all pistols patterned after the CZ75 There are three basic configurations of pistol standard semicompact standard frame and short slide and barrel and compact short slide and barrel short grip Triggers are doubleaction with an exposed hammer Typical safety arrangements may include either a frame mounted safety left side of frame only which may lock the hammer cocked or not or a slidemounted ambidextrous safety which decocks the hammer automatically when engaged Barrels have polygonal rifling Sights are fixed both front and rear sights being dovetailed to the slide Magazines are doublestack the capacity varies with caliber How to fieldstrip disassemble Jericho Baby Eagle pistol 1 remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release button 2 check that the chamber is empty 3 Put your left thumb through the trigger guard and with the other fingers grasp the top of the front part of the slide firmly Retract the slide slightly back until the two vertical notches on the rear part of the frame and slide are aligned with each other 4 while holding the slide in position as described above push the slide stop pin inwards from the right side of the frame then pull the slide stop out of the frame from the left side 5 push the slide and barrel assembly forward and out of the frame 6 Remove the return spring from below the barrel 7 pull the barrel out of the slide Reassemble in reverse order

Manurhin under German licence Later on production was returned to the reestablished Walther factory in the city of Ulm ab Donau prewar Walther factory was located in the city of ZellaMehlis and these pistols have seen widespread use by civilians and police as well as for personal defense by many noninfantry officers in several European armies Very close copies of the Walther PP were manufactured after the war by East Germany Hungary Romania Turkey and USA At the present time Walther PP PPKS and PPK pistols are manufactured in the USA by the Smith Wesson Company under licence from Walther Walther PPK pistols are essentially similar to the larger PP pistols except for the different design of the grip frame while on PP pistols the grip backstrap is integral to the frame and grip panels are two separate items left and right on PPK pistols grip frame has a rectangular shape of a magazine channel and the backstrap is formed by the singlepiece Ushaped grip unit also usually made of plastic While most PPK pistols were made with steel frames in the postwar period Walther also produced some aluminumframed PPKL Lightweight pistols Also there are Walther PPKS pistols which are a crossbreed between PP and PPK combining the PP frame with shorter PPKstyle barrel and slide These pistols were designed to avoid limitations imposed by the American Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1968 This act in particular limited the minimum size of a sporting purpose pistols that are allowed to be imported in USA and use of the larger grip frame allowed importing these pistols instead of smaller PPK pistols banned from importation under this law The Walther PP is blowbackoperated pistol with a fixed barrel usually of allsteel construction A few aluminumframed PP pistols were built in Germany before the war and stainless steel versions are manufactured in the USA under Walthers licence since the mid1980s The trigger is doubleaction with an exposed hammer and a framemounted manual safetydecocker the lockwork is somewhat complicated in a typical German manner and has many small parts and pins Sights are fixed with the rear sight blade dovetailed into the slide Magazines are singlestack the magazine release button is usually located at the left side of the frame just below the slide and in front of the grip panel However at least some PP pistols were made both before and after the war with so called Europeanstyle magazine release located at the heel of the grip Walther PP and PPK pistols are fitted with a loaded chamber indicator made in the form of a small pin that
