HELL HOUSE This tale of terror begins with three teenagers who love being scared They travel all over the country to find the ultimate fright challenge They come upon a huge warehouse made into a fun house of horrors They were told that some visitors that went in become victims or are scared to death The dare was those that completed the maze of terror would get their hefty admission fee plus double of that But no one ever has Stepping into the dark they are amerced into a satanic realm of ghosts ghouls and goblins A macabre wonderland populated by faces of death They are on the lookout for the chain saw maniac and the fatal woman on the stairs According to the house challenge if you survive these terrors you won the game While the horrors are impressive they don't stop one of the guys from moving ahead of the others Determined to be the first one to beat the challenge But just as the brave man shrugs off one of the animatronic attackers A little surprise sends him tearing out of the haunt in panic Now there were two Suddenly a bit less confident the others proceed They Marvel at how ambitious this interactive horror show is And can understand why the admission price is so high Still they know its all just make believe none of it was that terrifying or was it Suddenly one of the two on goers were overtaken by the darkness And now there is only one Now on his own the most hard core fright fan ventures alone His nerves on edge he tries to anticipate each gimmick As he wonders deeper into the depths of darkness and terror But his courage holds firm Eventually he gets a bit cocky Certain he's going to make it all the way through Then as he turns the last corner He's suddenly by the infamous fatal woman on the stairs For a second he's thrown off by the shock He recovers then realizes he only has one final terror to face But as the final door opens the house has the last word The horror junky races off in terror Weaving back through all the nightmares he's bravely endured Try as they might he and everybody else that has gone through has failed the hell house challenge It is said that the haunted house has a satanic curse put onto it Suddenly all the doors inside lock trapping its victims Some of the visitors that enter it and also some of the monster actors become possessed by demonic demons That take over the character's personality and using them to kill the trapped visitors Their mutilated bodies to be used for props and displays for the next year haunted house opening Hence the legend of the chain saw massacre where the legend was born And some other serial killers that have escaped the haunted house only to become the infamous human predators of today and tomorrow IF YOU LIKED THIS STORY THEN RENT OR WATCH THE HORROR MOVIE CALLED SLASHERS 2ND STORY THE FUNHOUSE Brian was crazy about the carnival It came to his town at the middle of every summer and he never missed a year he hadn't gone to it He knew every one of its rides and attractions by heart: the Ferris wheel the gypsy fortuneteller the shooting gallery throw a dart and get a poster game even the freak show But Brian's favorite attraction was the funhouse He could always spot it from the midway: a black building that looked like a clutter of giant shoe boxes of different sizes lying end to end The weather beaten black exterior was decorated with garish drawings of victims being cased by all shorts of creatures into the mouth of hell There was a drawing of a graveyard populated by rotting corpses and other demons of darkness feasting on the rotting remains of the freshly dead The monsters were painted in slashes of bright red green and black that seemed to glow brighter than any of the midway lights The people being chased away looked like they were screaming at the top of their lungs Brian liked nothing more than to be one of those people He knew the layout of the funhouse by heart and had for some time But this year something knew had been added The end of the funhouse walk was lit by a solitary overhead strobe light bulb Brian had spied a flutter of movement near the bulb He had nearly reached the hall's end when he heard a loud creak and something bulky dropped down from the ceiling The light flared bright with shocking intensity and Brian found himself standing face to face with a corpse dangling from the end of a noose Hands slack at the sides suddenly reached up to grab him AWESOME Brian thought that he might be able to convince some friends to come and see the thing before he remembered that tonight was the last night of the carnival Then he thought about how cool it would be to actually steal the corpse He could just imagine the looks on his friends faces when they walked into his bedroom and saw a corpse hanging from the inside of his door WICKED Brian was scheming so hard that he didn't look where he was going on his way out and nearly tumbled over the man who ran the funhouse The guy was a freak too With misshapen muscular limbs and had a hump in his back that threw his whole posture out of alignment The guy fixed him with an evil look He was gargoyle-faced But Brain never saw this man before He was as new as the corpse in the funhouse-and about as ugly From the look the guy gave him it seemed as though he knew that Brian was thinking he belonged inside with the rest of the horrors Brian felt a tingle of fear until the creep turned back to taking tickets from the next group of funhouse victims Brian walked the fairgrounds for a few hours killing time while he waited for the carnival to close All the while his thoughts were on the funhouse and how he might steal the dummy At midnight a voice came over the public speaker system telling the crowd that the carnival was closing down and to please start heading home Now was Brian's chance When he'd left the funhouse he'd seen the back door: just a loosely hanging piece of black canvas It would be a cinch to sneak inside during the confusion of everyone leaving the fairgrounds He could have the dummy in his hands in a few minutes and take it out through the front gates with him Lots of other people were carrying huge stuffed animals and no one would suspect that the dummy wasn't something he'd won at one of the games The freaky creep that ran the funhouse probably wouldn't know that his dummy was missing until the next town they set up in-and then it would be too late for them to come back looking for it By the time Brian reached the funhouse the lights shining on the painted front were all off and the gangplank leading up to it had chains across it Brian made sure no one was looking then ducked under the wires put up to keep people from straying off the path in front With the lights off it was darker in back than he had thought it would be The back door to the funhouse beckoned and Brian was surprised to discover that it was completely open All he had to do was slip behind the flap and he was in It was like they were begging someone to come in and rip them off It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dim light inside He felt his way through along the walls but the weird angles made him uncertain of where he was He was feeling his way along the wall when something smacked him across the face It was hairy and smelled disgusting as it pressed against his mouth He spluttered and gagged against it With a laugh he realized it was a fake arm that had shot out of the wall He remembered how he had dodged it during his earlier walk through Brian felt a floorboard wobble beneath his shoe and when he lifted his foot from it the arm pulled back It was on some kind of spring that the funhouse visitor activated by stepping on the floor That was probably the way all the funhouse frights worked The dim red light was shining down on the hung corpse as Brian groped his way to it They hadn't even bothered to hoist it back up after the last show Probably just left it there so that it would be easier for the freak to take apart when they packed up the carnival the next day He twisted the dummy around and saw it was locked into a harness with struts that extended into the arms So that was how they made the arms seem like they were clutching at you as it bounced at the end of the rope All Brain had to do was lift the dummy up to free the harness from the hook that attached it to the rope Creaaaaaaaakkkkk A floorboard sounded behind Brain He instantly turned to stone Creaaaaaaaakkkkk There it was again He thought about running back the way he had come But he'd already put so much effort into getting this far it would be a shame not to follow through Creaaaaaaaakkkkk It was only his nerves he thought He was only scaring himself There were probably lots of loose floorboards in the rickety building that were making the noise The funhouse had scary things in it-but nothing real Brian turned around and embraced the hanging corpse his hands clasping just behind the harness The thing's bobbing head nodded down and its face rested against his cheek He felt the icy coldness of a mask It was solid black plastic with a shiny surface that caught the light and reflected it's face in strange ways so that it would look like it was grinning or snarling back at you Up close he also realized the dummy had a rotting musty smell to it The hook didn't give easily and Brian lost patience He gave it a sharp tug The dummy slipped out of his clumsy hands and as he went to grab it he awkwardly pulled on one of the arms Then he heard a ripping sound and felt it wrench free of its socket He got upset after he found that he broke the dummy The detached arm slithered out of the sleeve the hand still snug in Brian's grasp It had a knob like bump protruding from its end and Brian held it up to the strobe light Then he dropped it as though it were red hot IT WAS A BONE A REAL HUMAN BONE The dummy spun around and Brian hesitantly reached up and flipped off the plastic mask The face behind it was mummified the skin gray with the texture of leather was stretched over its face in an expression of pure terror and agony A filthy gag was tied around its mouth Its skin was dried out and the eyes were sunken in Brian removed the corpse's gag and could make out its decayed but human skeletal teeth in the gaping mouth THIS WAS NO DUMMY Brian stepped back gagging Then a pair of hands reached out from the wall behind him and grabbed him He stepped off the board trying to make them retract and let go of him but no matter how his feet danced over the floorboards surface the arms held tight Then one of them grabbed him by the hair and roughly spun him around Staring back at Brian was the leering face of the freaky creep that ran the funhouse The man smiled at him wickedly and laughed Then he brought down something hard and painful on Brian's skull When Brain finally came to he found that he could not move his limbs They were bound to something hard and unyielding His chest felt constricted as though there were cords wrapped around it attaching to something behind him And a nasty tasting piece of cloth stretched around his mouth making it difficult for him to make any noise Brian felt himself twirled around and came face-to-face with the funhouse creep The man stared back at him and stroked his face with the dirty fingernails of his hand Such a good-looking boy much better looking then that overused bag of bones that you desecrated but too childish for your own good Said the freak Brian tried to scream but could muster no more than a gurgle against the wadded cloth in his mouth He flailed his legs only to find that he was no longer standing on the creaking floorboards of the funhouse He was several feet above them The freaky creep tugged Brian's head roughly forcing him to look down at the shriveled remains of the real funhouse corpse lying on the floor What a shame Brian was such a mischievous boy And how sad that he'd gone poking into things he shouldn't have just like the last mischievous boy that the freaky creep took care of Now Brian would have to replace what he had broken The freak snapped something over Brian's face Something dark and tight Something cold and plastic that would hide his tears When Brian awoke again to the sounds of creaking floorboards pure terror overtook him as he realized that the sounds came from a group of funhouse visitors He dreaded their footsteps as they came closer and closer He tried to struggle he tried to scream Suddenly Brian heard a quick clicking sound that released a spring Then Brain felt the support he was standing on give way and he plummeted into complete darkness Brian's disappearance was a complete mystery to his family and friends Eventually they gave up the search for him and assumed he ran away with the carnival

Original: Mikoto Uchiha In continuation of my characters' families this is Orihime Yukiko and Hanako's grandmother I think I never specified that Yukiko's grandma is an Uzumaki (By the way she's NOT related with Kushina or anybody else ) She comes from Uzushiogakure She moved to Kiri when she met her husband Nagisa Mizukawa who comes from Land of Water Unfortunately Orihime got pregnant very young (around 19 years old) and Nagisa didn't want a child so early so he left Orihime Yuki's grandma raised her son alone and after Kitaro's death she didn't hesitate to go take care of Yukiko and Hanako Orihime really loves her granddaughters plus she's a strong smart and nice woman Despite her advanced age - (She's around 60 yo in Shippuden) - she's very vigorous but she can have moments of weakness She was very affected by the departure of her love and her son's death so she wants to bring a lot of love to her granddaughters Moreover she's always good advice for Yukiko Idk why but I really love this character Anyway she had more scarlet hair when she was young but because of her old age they're grey and dull Well she's still alive and sometimes does missions (She's a Jonin) moreover she's close to the Mizukage Mei That's it )

Athena was awarded the city which forever after carried her name - Athens Known for his anger and not being the best of sports Poseidonproceeded to sent huge waves to flood the area in a mean-spiritedparting gesture To appease Poseidon's wrath the women of Athens were deprived of their vote and the men forbidden to bear their mothers names In the shrine of Erechtheus there remained preserved a long time an olive tree and a pool of salt water which had been set there by Poseidon and Athena as tokens when they contended for the city Another dispute arose between Poseidon and Athena over the city of Troezen but Zeus nipped it in the bud by declaring that it was to be shared equally between the two an arrangement loathed by both parties Quarrelsome Poseidon thus engaged in disputes with: Zeus over the island of Aegina Dionysus over the island of Naxos Helios the sun god over the area of Corinth (Poseidon was upset because he received the Isthmus of Corinth only while Helios got the prestigious Acropolis of Corinth) Hera wife of Zeus got into it with Poseidon over Argolis and that one got real ugly with accusations flying all over the place and Poseidon claiming that the Olympians were biased against him Poseidon's argument with Hera was referred for arbitration to a panel of three River-gods who made a decision in favor of Hera Outraged Poseidon vowed revenge on them Zeus had forbidden him to bring on floods as he had done in Athens so the sea god did the exact opposite -- He dried up the streams of his three judges (Inachus Cephissus and Asterion) and they never again flowed in the summer But Poseidon could be compassionate Anymone was a Danaid (nymph of nature) who was greatly distressed by these droughts and taking pity on her Poseidon caused the Argive river of Lerna to perpetually flow bringing Anymone much-needed relief Poseidon liked to boast that he created the first horse and it wasaccepted that he instituted horse-racing He even claimed to haveconstructed the first horse bridle although Athena begs to differ on thatthe two rarely got along at first even though eventually they reconciled and worked on some common causes Like Zeus it took many years for Poseidon to mature and not always act belligerently Although Poseidon is adored for giving men the first horse his primary importance was as Lord of the Sea At his command winds rose and the most violent of storms began but when he drove in his golden chariot over the water the storms subsided and tranquil peace followed his wheels Ancient sailors and warriors would pray and offer tributes to the great Poseidon prior to undertaking a sea journey In turn Poseidon could be cruel and hostile to those who displeased him such as the hero of the Trojan War Odysseus who suffered great tribulations at the hands of Poseidon while embarked on his Odyssey back home Both the bull and the horse are associated with Poseidon but the bull is associated with many other gods as Kind of Blue isn't merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis it's an album that towers above its peers a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album a universally acknowledged standard of excellence Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique Perhaps because this music never flaunts its genius It lures listeners in with the slow luxurious bassline and gentle piano chords of So What From that moment on the record never really changes pace -- each tune has a similar relaxed feel as the music flows easily Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening It's the pinnacle of modal jazz -- tonality and solos build from the overall key not chord changes giving the music a subtly shifting quality All of this doesn't quite explain why seasoned jazz fans return to this record even after they've memorized every nuance They return because this is an exceptional band -- Miles Coltrane Bill Evans Cannonball Adderley Paul Chambers Jimmy Cobb -- one of the greatest in history playing at the peak of its power As Evans said in the original liner notes for the record the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled and then the band improvised The end results were wondrous and still crackle with vitality Kind of Blue works on many different levels It can be played as background music yet it amply rewards close listening It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable It may be a stretch to say that if you don't like Kind of Blue you don't like jazz -- but it's hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collectionnThroughout a professional career lasting 50 years Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical introspective and melodic style often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate But if his approach to his instrument was constant his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz from the mid-'40s to the early '90s since he was in the thick of almost every important innovation and stylistic development in the music during that period and he often led the way in those changes both with his own performances and recordings and by choosing sidemen and collaborators who forged new directions It can even be argued that jazz stopped evolving when Davis wasn't there to push it forwardnnDavis was the son of a dental surgeon Dr Miles Dewey Davis Jr and a music teacher Cleota Mae (Henry) Davis and thus grew up in the black middle class of east St Louis after the family moved there shortly after his birth He became interested in music during his childhood and by the age of 12 began taking trumpet lessons While still in high school he started to get jobs playing in local bars and at 16 was playing gigs out of town on weekends At 17 he joined Eddie Randle's Blue Devils a territory band based in St Louis He enjoyed a personal apotheosis in 1944 just after graduating from high school when he saw and was allowed to sit in with Billy Eckstine's big band who was playing in St Louis The band featured trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonist Charlie Parker the architects of the emerging bebop style of jazz which was characterized by fast inventive soloing and dynamic rhythm variations It is striking that Davis fell so completely under Gillespie and Parker's spell since his own slower and less flashy style never really compared to theirs But bebop was the new sound of the day and the young trumpeter was bound to follow it He did so by leaving the Midwest to attend the Institute of Musical Art in New York City (renamed Juilliard) in September 1944 Shortly after his arrival in Manhattan he was playing in clubs with Parker and by 1945 he had abandoned his academic studies for a full-time career as a jazz musician initially joining Benny Carter's band and making his first recordings as a sideman He played with Eckstine in 1946-1947 and was a member of Parker's group in 1947-1948 making his recording debut as a leader on a 1947 session that featured Parker pianist John Lewis bassist Nelson Boyd and drummer Max Roach This was an isolated date however and Davis spent most of his time playing and recording behind Parker But in the summer of 1948 he organized a nine-piece band with an unusual horn section In addition to himself it featured an alto saxophone a baritone saxophone a trombone a French horn and a tuba This nonet employing arrangements by Gil Evans and others played for two weeks at the Royal Roost in New York in September Earning a contract with Capitol Records the band went into the studio in January 1949 for the first of three sessions which produced 12 tracks that attracted little attention at first The band's relaxed sound however affected the musicians who played it among them Kai Winding Lee Konitz Gerry Mulligan John Lewis JJ Johnson and Kenny Clarke and it had a profound influence on the development of the cool jazz style on the West Coast In February 1957 Capitol finally issued the tracks together on an LP called Birth of the Cool Davis meanwhile had moved on to co-leading a band with pianist Tadd Dameron in 1949 and the group took him out of the country for an appearance at the Paris Jazz Festival in May But the trumpeter's progress was impeded by an addiction to heroin that plagued him in the early '50s His performances and recordings became more haphazard but in January 1951 he began a long series of recordings for the Prestige label that became his main recording outlet for the next several years He managed to kick his habit by the middle of the decade and he made a strong impression playing 'Round Midnight at the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1955 a performance that led the major label Columbia Records to sign him The prestigious contract allowed him to put together a permanent band and he organized a quintet featuring saxophonist John Coltrane pianist Red Garland bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones who began recording his Columbia debut 'Round About Midnight in October As it happened however he had a remaining five albums on his Prestige contract and over the next year he was forced to alternate his Columbia sessions with sessions for Prestige to fulfill this previous commitment The latter resulted in the Prestige albums The New Miles Davis Quintet Cookin' Workin' Relaxin' and Steamin' making Davis' first quintet one of his better-documented outfits In May 1957 just three months after Capitol released the Birth of the Cool LP Davis again teamed with arranger Gil Evans for his second Columbia LP Miles Ahead Playing flgelhorn Davis fronted a big band on music that extended the Birth of the Cool concept and even had classical overtones Released in 1958 the album was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame intended to honor recordings made before the Grammy Awards were instituted in 1959 In December 1957 Davis returned to Paris where he improvised the background music for the film L'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud (Escalator to the Gallows) Jazz Track an album containing this music earned him a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance Solo or Small Group He added saxophonist Cannonball Adderley to his group creating the Miles Davis Sextet who recorded the album Milestones in April 1958 Shortly after this recording Red Garland was replaced on piano by Bill Evans and Jimmy Cobb took over for Philly Joe Jones on drums In July Davis again collaborated with Gil Evans and an orchestra on an album of music from Porgy and Bess Back in the sextet Davis began to experiment with modal playing basing his improvisations on scales rather than chord changes This led to his next band recording Kind of Blue in March and April 1959 an album that became a landmark in modern jazz and the most popular disc of Davis' career eventually selling over two million copies a phenomenal success for a jazz record In sessions held in November 1959 and March 1960 Davis again followed his pattern of alternating band releases and collaborations with Gil Evans recording Sketches of Spain containing traditional Spanish music and original compositions in that style The album earned Davis and Evans Grammy nominations in 1960 for Best Jazz Performance Large Group and Best Jazz Composition More Than 5 minutes they won in the latter categorynnBy the time Davis returned to the studio to make his next band album in March 1961 Adderley had departed Wynton Kelly had replaced Bill Evans at the piano and John Coltrane had left to begin his successful solo career being replaced by saxophonist Hank Mobley (following the brief tenure of Sonny Stitt) Nevertheless Coltrane guested on a couple of tracks of the album called Someday My Prince Will Come The record made the pop charts in March 1962 but it was preceded into the bestseller lists by the Davis quintet's next recording the two-LP set Miles Davis in Person (Friday Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk San Francisco) recorded in April The following month Davis recorded another live show as he and his band were joined by an orchestra led by Gil Evans at Carnegie Hall in May The resulting Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall was his third LP to reach the pop charts and it earned Davis and Evans a 1962 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance by a Large Group Instrumental Davis and Evans teamed up again in 1962 for what became their final collaboration Quiet Nights The album was not issued until 1964 when it reached the charts and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Large Group or Soloist with Large Group In 1996 Columbia Records released a six-CD box set Miles Davis Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings that won the Grammy for Best Historical Album Quiet Nights was preceded into the marketplace by Davis' next band effort Seven Steps to Heaven recorded in the spring of 1963 with an entirely new lineup consisting of saxophonist George Coleman pianist Victor Feldman bassist Ron Carter and drummer Frank Butler During the sessions Feldman was replaced by Herbie Hancock and Butler by Tony Williams The album found Davis making a transition to his next great group of which Carter Hancock and Williams would be members It was another pop chart entry that earned 1963 Grammy nominations for both Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Soloist or Small Group and Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Large Group The quintet followed with two live albums Miles Davis in Europe recorded in July 1963 which made the pop charts and earned a 1964 Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Small Group or Soloist with Small Group and My Funny Valentine recorded in February 1964 and released in 1965 when it reached the pop charts By September 1964 the final member of the classic Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s was in place with the addition of saxophonist Wayne Shorter to the team of Davis Carter Hancock and Williams While continuing to play standards in concert this unit embarked on a series of albums of original compositions contributed by the band members starting in January 1965 with ESP followed by Miles Smiles (1967 Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Small Group or Soloist with Small Group 7 or Fewer) Sorcerer Nefertiti Miles in the Sky (1968 Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Small Group or Soloist with Small Group) and Filles de Kilimanjaro By the time of Miles in the Sky the group had Davis' first album to be certified gold It also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Arrangement and won the Grammy for large-group jazz performance He followed it with such similar efforts as Miles Davis at Fillmore East (1971 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance by a Group) A Tribute to Jack Johnson Live-Evil On the Corner and In Concert all of which reached the pop charts Meanwhile Davis' former sidemen became his disciples in a series of fusion groups: Corea formed Return to Forever Shorter and Zawinul led Weather Report and McLaughlin and former Davis drummer Billy Cobham organized the Mahavishnu Orchestra Starting in October 1972 when he broke his ankles in a car accident Davis became less active in the early '70s and in 1975 he gave up recording entirely due to illness undergoing surgery for hip replacement later in the year Five years passed before he returned to action by recording The Man With the Horn in 1980 and going back to touring in 1981 By now he was an elder statesman of jazz and his innovations had been incorporated into the music at least by those who supported his eclectic approach He was also a celebrity whose appeal extended far beyond the basic jazz audience He performed on the worldwide jazz festival circuit and recorded a series of albums that made the pop charts including We Want Miles (1982 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance by a Soloist) Star People Decoy and You're Under Arrest In 1986 after 30 years with Columbia he switched to Warner Bros Records and released Tutu which won him his fourth Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance Aura an album he had recorded in 1984 was released by Columbia in 1989 and brought him his fifth Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance by a Soloist (on a Jazz Recording) Davis surprised jazz fans when on July 8 1991 he joined an orchestra led by Quincy Jones at the Montreux Jazz Festival to perform some of the arrangements written for him in the late '50s by Gil Evans he had never previously looked back at an aspect of his career He died of pneumonia respiratory failure and a stroke within months Doo-Bop his last studio album appeared in 1992 It was a collaboration with rapper Easy Mo Bee and it won a Grammy for Best Rhythm Blues Instrumental Performance with the track Fantasy nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo Released in 1993 Miles Quincy Live at Montreux won Davis his seventh Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble PerformancennMiles Davis took an all-inclusive constantly restless approach to jazz that had begun to fall out of favor by the time of his death even as it earned him controversy during his lifetime It was hard to recognize the bebop acolyte of Charlie Parker in the flamboyantly dressed leader with the hair extensions who seemed to keep one foot on a wah-wah pedal and one hand on an electric keyboard in his later years But he did much to popularize jazz reversing the trend away from commercial appeal that bebop began And whatever the fripperies and explorations he retained an ability to play moving solos that endeared him to audiences and demonstrated his affinity with tradition At a time when jazz is inclining toward academia and repertory orchestras rather than moving forward he is a reminder of the music's essential quality of boundless invention using all available means

with bow ties and jeweled cuff links some have shoulder-length hair and others wear open-collared shirts that reveal the slightest filigree of tattoo arching across their chests Over Italian food retired lawyers and judges sit elbow-to-elbow with owners of scrap metal yards and vintage clothing boutiques They hold forth on philosophy the weather they rib each other and joke about saving room for cannoli As they reach for seconds they reveal skull-cracking rings emblazoned with a compass and a square Meet the millennial Masons As secret societies go it is one of the oldest and most famous Its enrollment roster includes Louis Armstrong and Gerald Ford and it has been depicted in movies such as The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure Once more than 4 million strong (back in the 1950s) it has been in something of a popularity free-fall ever since Viewed with suspicion as a bastion of antiquated values and forced camaraderie the Masons have seen membership rolls plummet more than 60 to just 15 million in 2006 Only now the trend seems to be reversing itself and nowhere more noticeably than in Southern California The reasons seem clear In another Masonic Hall this one on La Cienega a Sri Lankan-born banker a sunglasses-wearing Russian immigrant and a continent-hopping Frenchman break bread poke at their salads and chat about their health For a time it looked as if Masonry was going into a sharp decline if not the death throes said UCLA history professor Margaret C Jacob who has written extensively about the fraternal order But it looks like it may be making a comeback That's because the Freemasons whose tenets forbid soliciting or recruiting members have enthusiastically embraced the Internet as a way to leverage curiosity about an organization with its roots in Europe's medieval stonemasons guilds Freemasonry today sees itself as a thinking man's salon a learned society with a philanthropic bent We had a record number of new members last year said Allan Casalou grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of California We added 2000 men which is the most since 1998 and our seventh straight year of membership increases And to paraphrase that Oldsmobile campaign these definitely aren't your father's Freemasons They are bar owners male models and olive-oil brokers They are men like Zulu an LA tattoo artist with a swirling Maori-inspired design inked across his face and a panoply of metal piercing his ears nose and face They are men like Jonathan Kanarek who runs a men's vintage clothing store on Hollywood Boulevard and whose retro chic wardrobe of polka-dot ascots glen-plaid jackets and smartly pressed pocket squares earned him a spot on Esquire magazine's 2007 list of best-dressed real men in America And they are men like Daemon Hillin whose surfer-dude looks and blinding white smile can be found on Japanese TV where he plays sidekick and comic foil to the Japanese version of the Hilton sisters They are also all men who want to be part of an all-for-one and one-for-all brotherhood built on shared ideals philosophical pursuits and a penchant for rings aprons and funny hats As Zulu bluntly put it: I joined because I was looking for people to hang with that were like-minded but also hip and cool and a lot of tattoo artists tend to be drunks and druggies Hillin who originally joined the Masons in Temecula moved to LA and is interested in the Santa Monica-Palisades Lodge No 307 one of the youngest and most diverse congregations in the state (the average age of active brothers is just 33) The lodge's senior deacon Jim Warren calls it 'Star Trek' without the chicks We have every possible national origin ethnicity and religious denomination you could imagine he said Warren credits the Internet We were one the first lodges in the state to have a website up he said That led to a huge spike in membership Other lodges followed suit putting up their own sites and drawing a crowd That's how prospective Mason Johnny Royal ended up at the door of Elysian Lodge No 418 last month Intrigued by the distinctive Masonic architecture that graces most halls the 31-year-old publicist with sideburns to his chin and hair to his shoulders and a Renaissance lute player tattoo on his right forearm hit the Web What he read about the Masonic ideals -- wisdom strength beauty and the pursuit of knowledge -- made him decide to pursue membership My generation wants to be part of something beyond itself Royal said I want to learn I want to participate The Web generation THE INTERNET hasn't only made it easier to learn about the Freemasons Casalou says it's changed the type of men coming forward There is so much information on the Internet that by the time someone comes to a lodge to seek membership they already know a lot about Masonry he said Which is a big departure from previous generations And it means they are more likely to be active participants Zulu became curious about Freemasonry after tattooing Masonic symbology on several clients He joined five years ago at age 39 and now serves as webmaster and senior warden of North Hollywood Lodge No 542 He has also gone on to become both a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner (Masonic membership is a prerequisite for both) and next year he will become the leader of his lodge I'll be the first black worshipful master in the lodge's history he said using the proper term of respect But he probably won't be the last Because California's contingent of Freemasons is expected to grow the average age of its members once 71 and now 65 is expected to drop By 2018 as Casalou predicts the state will be awash in 55-year-old pre-retirement Masons giving each other secret handshakes wearing ritual aprons and invoking the Grand Architect of the Universe The Internet continues to help Zulu said that he gets at least four e-mails a week from prospective Masons around the globe who see his tattooed and pierced visage at the lodge website and want to be reassured such an alternative look isn't a barrier to membership Yeah I think it's going to become hip and chic to be a Mason Zulu said And that could be a dangerous thing New or old one hallmark of Freemasonry
