Cut 14 deep slices into the foam Keep these close together (imagine an old piece of cedar) Knots are a great addition If your carving in any lettering - now is the time for this too

Using your heat gun heat the foam in a long fluid motion from end to end You'll be truly surprised at how easy it is to achieve the desired effect

Step back and admire your fine work This whole process took about 30 - 45 mins

Using flat black paint the entire piece (don't forget the sides) Let it dry before proceding - I used a hair dryer and moved to the next step in about 5 mins

Working in sections begin to apply the latex using your nylon brush Simply brush it on like paint

First dry-brush coat I used a medium to dark brown for this When Dry I moved into a browngrey mix Finally I finished with a very light brushing of off-white to really bring out the wood grain

Work your way around When dry (use the hair dryer again) go over the whole pumpkin with a more orange coat Let dry Third coat should be your lightest and pretty much pure orange (this is just to highlight the very tips of the ridges)

Mix the orange brown (more brown than orange for 1st coat) Using your chip brush (WITH A VERY DRY BRUSH) work against the grain with a swift left right motion Try to only get the paint on the natural ridges of the cotton strips

Work your way around the top half of the pumpkin in sections then latex When done with top do the bottom TIP - When adding the bottom cotton pull off the tip of the cotton strip to fray the end - this helps with blending the strips together

Use the latex as an adhesive to stick the cotton to the pumpkin Leave about 14 - 12 between the strips This doesn't have to be perfect The strips won't be long enough so I always do the top all the way around then blend in the bottom later

Glue PVC to scrap wood to make stand I used a 34 piece of PVC to slip the 12 into - now my stand is reuseable For this method it's best to wrap duct tape aound the 12 to keep in from moving around as you're working with it
