Home : News : Weekend Fires Damage Business Garage Mobile Home and Home n Email to a friend Print version nWeekend Fires Damage Business Garage Mobile Home and Home nBy Paul B Hayes on December 162008 n n n nWeekend faires across the county heavily damaged a Columbia business destroyed a two-car garage and heavily damaged a double-wide mobile home and destroyed a home in the Pellyton community nThe Red barn Barbecue on Hudson Street was damaged in a fire discovered early Sunday morning nA Columbia Police Department officer on routine patrol noticed smoke coming from the building at 4:25 am and called the 911 Dispatch Center The Columbia Fire Department responded to the scene and found smoke billowing out around the top of the two-story structure nThe fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area in the rear of the building and that area sustained the most damage with a section of the roof over the kitchen falling in The remainder of the interior the building sustained moderate damage nA total of 17 firemen responded to the call and were on the scene for approximately one and one-half hours nThe cause of the fire is under investigation nFriday fire destroys garage damages mobile home nA Friday afternoon fire on Hatcher Road off Pelham Branch Road completed destroyed a two-car garage and the vehicles in it and heavily damaged an adjacent double-wide mobile home nThe fire at the Tony and Melissa Caldwell residence at 70 Hatcher Road was called in at approximately 3 pm Friday nWhen the Adair County Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene they discovered the garage completely engulfed in flames A strong wind caused the fire to jump to the adjacent double-wide mobile home nThe garage and two vehicles inside it were completely destroyed while three rooms of the mobile home were heavily damaged and the remainder of the home suffered moderate damage nAccording to Adair County Deputy Chief Dennis Loy Tony Caldwell told him that he was draining the fuel tank on one of the vehicles to get water out of it and had a propane heater burning in the rear of the garage when the heater apparently ignited fumes nTwelve firemen responded to the call and were on the scene for approximately two hours nHome destroyed in Pellyton community nAn early morning fire Saturday completely destroyed one side of a two-part home on Liberty Road in the Pellyton community nAccording to Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Richie Gabehart the fire was reported at 4:44 am Saturday at 17609 Liberty Road Fire broke out in one side of a two-home structure connected by a breezeway owned by Laura Titsos nGabehart said that Tony Gales and Leslie Thompson lived in the house that caught on fire and the fire completely destroyed that portion of the structure However he said the firefighters were able to save the other house and the connecting breezeway nGabehart said that the fire may have started in a flu in the upstairs area of the house He said that the wooden-frame home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene nTwelve firefighters responded to the fire and remained on the scene for six to eight hours Photo: SMOKE BILLOWED from the garage next to the mobile home residence of Tony and Melissa Caldwell on Hatcher Road Friday afternoon The fire started in the garage which was totally destroyed along with two vehicles in it then was spread by the wind to the mobile home which suffered extensive damage (Photos by Paul B Hayes)

When the Lord was creating Firefighters he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one And the Lord said Have you read the specifications on this person Firefighters have to be able to go for hours fighting fires or tending to a person that the usual every day person would never touch while putting in the back of their mind the circumstances They have to be able to move at a second's notice and not think twice of what they are about to do no matter what the danger They have to be in top physical condition at all times running on half-eaten meals and they must have six pairs of hands The angel shook her head slowly and said Six pair of handsno way It's not the hands that are causing me problems said the Lord It's the three pairs of eyes Firefighters need to have That's on a standard model Asked the angel The Lord nodded One pair that sees through the fire and where they and their fellow Firefighters should fight the fire next Another pair here in the side of the head to see their fellow Firefighter and keep them safe And another pair of eyes in the front so that they can look for victims caught in the fire that need their help Lord said the angel touching his sleeve Rest and work on this tomorrow I can't said the Lord I already have a model that can carry a 250 pound man down a flight of stairs and to safety from a burning building and can feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck The angel circled the model of the Firefighter very slowly Can it think You bet said the Lord It can tell you the elements of a hundred fires and can recite procedures in their sleep that are needed to care for a person until they reach the hospital And all the while they have to keep their wits about themselves This Firefighter also has a phenomenal personal control They can deal with a scene full of pain and hurt coaxing a child's mother into letting go of the child so that they can care for the child in need And still they rarely get the recognition for a job well done from anybody other than from fellow Firefighters Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Firefighter There's a leak she pronounced Lord it's a tear What is the tear for asked the angel It's a tear from bottled up emotions for fallen comrades A tear for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American Flag It's a tear for all the pain and suffering they have encountered And it's a tear for their commitment to caring for and saving lives of their fellow man What a wonderful feature Lord you're a genius said the angel The Lord looked somber and said I didn't put it there -author unknown

tail 86-0116 Moved to Ellsworth from Mountain Home 2002 Destroyed in ground fire at al-Udeid AB 04 Apr 2008 On April 4th 2008 B-1B 86-0116 from the 28th BW caught fire at al-Udeid AB while taxiing in after landing The crew evacuated the aircraft The incident occured at 2120 local time (1820 GMT) It was subsequently reported that an hydraulic failure caused the B-1B to veer off the runway at al-Udeid and catch fire setting off its bombs leading to a series of explosions This series of loud explosions was heard in many parts of Doha and people living near the air base said the blasts shook the ground The aircraft was completely destroyed The report into the loss of 86-0116 on 4th April 2008 concluded that the near-simultaneous failure of two hydraulic systems on the aircraft caused a ground collision with concrete security barriers and a fire that destroyed the aircraft and damaged two others Damage to the B-1B and two C-130J aircraft totalled 346 million Despite explosions and a fire that burned into the next day no one was injured The B-1Bs four crew members aircraft commander and pilot Maj Norman Shelton pilot Capt Brett Sailsbery offensive systems officer Capt Eric Alvarez and defensive systems officer Capt Scott Martley escaped from the aircraft by climbing through a roof hatch and sheltering in a drainage culvert According to the investigation board's report this is how it happened As the bomber returned from an 11-hour mission over Afghanistan the crew reported no noteworthy mechanical issues other than a problem with the radarnWith a bomb bay holding 2000lb bombs and fuel tanks holding 40000lb of gas the jet made a normal landing at around 9 pm local and headed toward the B-1B flight line But as the bomber taxied the plane turned left by itself Aircraft commander Shelton stopped the plane and realized warning lights were on indicating problems with nose wheel steering and hydraulics As a precaution Shelton engaged the parking brake but it malfunctioned Shelton then tried the emergency parking brake It failed too Suddenly Shelton was behind the stick of a rolling 230000+ lb jet with no brakes or steering The jet turned to the right on its own and began to go north along a taxiway at about 3 mph aimed at a C-130 parking ramp Shelton countered the right-hand turn by speeding up the jets right-side No 4 engine while keeping the other engines at idle It worked but accelerated the jet to 14 mph Shelton decided to shut down the engines and slow the plane forgoing steering the jet By now the aircrew had lost control of the jet The B-1B rolled off the taxiway and into a 7ft concrete barrier protecting the C-130 parking ramp The impact collapsed the bombers front landing gear but it kept going for a further 53 feet until the engines and main landing gear struck the wall The jet lurched downward breaking open a fuel line or tank and causing a massive fuel leak After discovering the entry door in the jets belly would not open the aircrew scrambled out of an overhead escape hatch They used a rope to lower themselves to the ground and into a pool of jet fuel nearly 8 inches deep The airmen ran to a meeting point about 100 yards from the jets nose Then explosions rang out from the jet and they ran a couple of hundred yards farther to the safety of a culvert The crew stayed in the culvert for another 45 minutes as the plane burned and detonations erupted Al Udeid firefighters arrived at the scene after the crew had escaped but called off their efforts to put out the fire when explosions began The fire was so dangerous base officials waited 18 hours for the blaze to burn itself out They also shut down fight operations at the base for several hours The concern was justified: when emergency workers combed through the wreckage they found a pair of unexploded 2000-pound bombs

This is an actual Soviet Union Chernobyl Liquidator Medal Award Status: A one time awarded n nLiquidators (Russian: ) is the name given in the former USSR to approximately 800000 people who were in charge of the removal of the consequences of the April 26 1986 Chernobyl disaster on the site of the event n nThis medal is awarded for help with cleanup of the Chernobyl disaster The central detail of the Liquidators' badge with traces of alpha () beta () and gamma () particles over a drop of blood n n n-- Personal Thoughts -- nRecent events made me decided to look into history and purchase this medal by chance This may not be a 100 military award but it definitely requires 200 or more courage to do the things required n nWith the 11th March 2011 the Thoku earthquake and tsunami had damaged the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant When a nuclear accident resulted in a serious fire at the plant's unit 4 on 15 March 2011 these 50 employees remained on-site after 750 other workers were evacuated Fukushima 50 is the name given by the media to this group of 50 workers n nI signed on to eBay and happen to found pages of listings for Liquidator Medals -- medals that were awarded to the 800000 young men from throughout the former Soviet Union who were conscripted to clean-up operations in the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster almost 26 years ago (2011) n nI paid my US1599 (approx S20) and two week later I was holding the medal in my hands A cheap price for a medal won at such a cost Not many people realize that the miners soldiers and fireman who were the first responders to Chernobyl may have saved Europe n nLooking at the medal it is hard not to think of the 373 New York City firefighters who died at the World Trade Center in September 2001 and the workers in the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant now
