There are many other painters in the world but the collectors of Csaba Markus will tell you that there is only one whose paintings can create such contrasts within such harmony one who can express the Eternal Feminine in her many guises both as mortal woman and as mythological goddess There is one who does not paint merely to please the eye but to shake the soul of the viewer There is only one and his name is Csaba Markus The gradual shaping of Markus artistic style and philosophy found its origins in Budapest Hungary where the artist was born in 1953 He spent the first half of his life enmeshed in the traditions and Old World ideologies of Europe and in his search for direction he discovered and thoroughly embraced the artists of the Renaissance His mentors became the works of artists such as Michelangelo Caravaggio and Botticelli and his goal echoed their own: to find the perfect way of expressing himself through his art Markus quest for artistic expression brought both frustration and inner tension as he yearned to discover the world and to open himself up to every possible experience He began to travel and his wanderings and exposure to different cultures was a source of endless inspiration He began to experiment with hundreds of different techniques and mediums such as glass sculpture ceramics hand made papers etchings mono prints and even animation as his paintings reflected the universal influences of his travels Even as he continuously challenged himself with new ideas and techniques Markus was always drawn back to the ideals of the Renaissance period This resulted in the creation of his own highly unique style a contemporary fusion of Renaissance Europe and Classical Mythology His artistic development however was hindered by the rigorous controls of the Communist system in his native country His desire for individuality and recognition clashed with the tenets of the Communism and he eventually realized that he could not flourish in such a restrictive environment With the Old World ideals and Renaissance philosophies of his youth firmly in mind Markus left Europe to travel the world and eventually established a fine art studio in California The studio was a realization of one of his lifelong dreams which was to design a fully creative environment that would allow him to challenge himself daily and would inspire exciting new ideas and innovations With the creation of his studio he was also able to turn his incredible focus and determination to fulfilling yet another dream: to make the finest art prints such as etchings stone lithographs and serigraphs It was not only a dream but also a reaction to the demand for his art from his world base of collectors He could not fulfill the need to share his art strictly through originals as there could never be enough to satisfy the demand and he would not compromise the quality of his editions I want to create editions that are unique and of the highest quality the artist has explained They should look as though I just finished painting it and put my paintbrush down five minutes before Markus has described serigraphy as the beautiful struggle illustrating the continuously evolving and intensely difficult process in which he works with many layers of colors textures and intricate details of the serigraph until he has finally fashioned the masterpiece of his vision Each piece is extensively hand embellished by Markus himself with dried pigments ground glass platinum and 24 carat gold in the tradition of European artisanship that Markus brings to all of his limited edition serigraphs It is his desire for each and every piece to be a unique and individual objet d art and his most recent creations have proved no exception Like a symphony for the eyes every design detail and hue has been finely tuned for the blending of an artistic masterpiece Markus distinctive style is like no other and for this reason he stands alone and is incomparable to other artists From him one can expect the unexpected as he continues to surprise his collectors with new art forms and innovative ideas and to exceed his own incredibly high expectations His painting which has been shaped by the varied influences and experiences of his journey through life has an undeniably universal appeal He is one of the most widely collected contemporary artists across the world and his collectors wait eagerly to see what he will do next His work is currently displayed in prestigious art galleries throughout the United States England France Russia and Japan and his commissioned pieces hang in some of the most exclusive private collections in the United StatesnPhoto by Phil Parmet

February 2008 The Arab Cultural and Community Center presentsThe First Bay Area Arab Women's Conference Dear Community Member In the spirit of International Women's Month the Arab Cultural and Community Center of San Francisco would like to invite you to The First Bay Area Arab Women's Conference to be held March 14th 2008 at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in Mountain View CA This conference aims to illuminate the success of Arab women while also confronting the political social economic and health challenges that they face in their professional and personal lives It aims to shed light on the diversity and beauty of Arab womanhood through a variety of influential artists community leaders and educators Arab women play an integral role in cultural preservation within their respective communities through their activities and participation in civil society The Arab Cultural and Community Center invites you to share this one of a kind experience on Friday March 14th 2008 Closing remarks by the Arab Cultural and Community Center Speaker Biographies Dina Ibrahim PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts department at San Francisco State University where she teaches Radio and Television News Production courses She is also a co-producer of the radio show Arab Talk on KPOO 895 FM in San Francisco She has reported for the BBC World Service Radio in London CNN in Atlanta and Cairo NPR in Austin Texas UPI in Cairo and Arab News newspaper in Dhahran Saudi Arabia Her research interests are in the area of American television news representation of Arabs and Muslims Her BA and MA are from the American University in Cairo and her PhD is from the University of Texas at Austin Dina Omar is a Palestinian-American poet in her senior year at University of California at Berkeley majoring in Middle Eastern Studies and Anthropology She has been a part of the Palestinian American Women's Association for five years performing monologues and poetry as well as photography and is deeply committed to helping educate people about women Muslims Arabs Iraq and most of all the Palestinian plight through the arts Halla Ayla is an Iraqi born artist currently living in the Francisco Bay Area Before her move to the US Ms Ayla lived between Iraq Lebanon and Saudi Arabia after which she lived in Europe for 15 years Halla has been a photographer for over 20 years and began painting in her early thirties She combines photography with painting and collage to create unique mixed media painted photographs from her journeys to the Middle East The Magic of Morocco is the first in a series of exhibits that focus on the Arab world and aim to reveal the unique beauty vibrancy and richness of the Arab culture The second in the series The Arab World Unveiled is an exhibition on Egypt: Past and Present called The Mysteries of Egypt The most recent works are entitled Everyday Enchantment and focus on the Levant: Syria Jordan and Lebanon By presenting an alternative perspective and visual of the Arab world she hopes to alter errant perceptions and instead create bridges of empathy and understanding between the two cultures: East and West She has been invited to speak to a variety of audiences about the Arab world deflecting the damaging stereotypes that prevail about the region She gave the keynote address at a Red Cross Annual Meeting where she spoke about the historic legacy of the Arabs and its impact on today's world Ms Ayla has appeared on national and local radio and television such as ABC's Good Morning America as a champion for Arab art culture and humanity Nadiah Mshasha is Palestinian American woman who received her Masters in public health from San Jose State University in 2001 She has spent the last two years teaching community health courses at San Jose State University and providing cultural competency health education on behalf of the Arab Cultural and Community Center Sally Al-Daher (Executive Director) received a Masters degree in Public Health from San Jose State University In 2003 she began working as the Health Education Specialist for the Arab Cultural Community Center of San Francisco During her time as Health Education Specialist Sally served on the ACCC's Festival Planning Committee and assisted with outreach In September 2005 Sally was promoted to Executive Director of the ACCC and has worked diligently to expand the cultural programming and partnerships of the Arab Cultural Community Center Suad Amiry is an architect and the founder and director of RIWAQ Centre for Architectural Conservation in Ramallah Palestine She grew up in Amman Damascus Beirut and Cairo and studied architecture at the American University of Beirut and at the University of Michigan finally receiving her PHD in architecture from the University of Edinburgh Amiry participated in the 1991-1993 Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations in Washington DC and from 1994 to 1996 she served as assistant deputy minister and director general of the Ministry of Culture in Palestine She is the author of several books on architecture and was awarded Italy's Viareggio-Versilia Prize in 2004 for her groundbreaking novel Sharon and My Mother in Law Some of her other books include 1998's The City Local Traditional and Global Destiny and 1989s The Palestinian Village Home Amiry currently lives in Ramallah Palestine and teaches at the University of Birzeit Susu Attar is an Iraqi-born visual artist living in San Francisco She is a board member of Elev8 a Los
