prevailed in a power struggle over Leon Trotsky In the 1930s Stalin initiated the Great Purge a campaign of political repression persecution and executions that reached its peak in 1937 Stalin's rule had long-lasting effects on the features that characterized the Soviet state from the era of his rule to its collapse in 1991though Maoists anti-revisionists and some others say he was actually the last legitimate Socialist leader in the Soviet Union's history Stalin claimed his policies were based on Marxism-Leninism they are now often considered to represent a political and economic system called Stalinism Stalin replaced the New Economic Policy (NEP) of the 1920s with Five-Year Plans in 1928 and collective farming at roughly the same time The Soviet Union was transformed from a predominantly peasant society to a major world industrial power by the end of the 1930s789 Confiscations of grain and other food by the Soviet authorities under his orders contributed to a famine between 1932 and 1934 especially in the key agricultural regions of the Soviet Union Ukraine (see Holodomor) Kazakhstan and North Caucasus that resulted in millions of deaths Many peasants resisted collectivization and grain confiscations but were repressed most notably well-off peasants deemed kulaks4 Bearing the brunt of the Nazis' attacks (around 75 of the Wehrmacht's forces) the Soviet Union under Stalin made the largest and most decisive contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II (known in the USSR as the Great Patriotic War 194145) After the war Stalin established the USSR as one of the two major superpowers in the world a position it maintained for nearly four decades following his death in 1953 Stalin's rule - reinforced by a cult of personality - fought real and alleged opponents mainly through the security apparatus such as the NKVD Millions of people were killed through famines executions deportations and in the Gulag Nikita Khrushchev Stalin's henchman and eventual successor denounced Stalin's rule and the cult of personality in 1956 initiating the process of de-Stalinization which later became part of the Sino-Soviet Split Number of victims Early researchers of the number killed by Stalin's regime were forced to rely largely upon anecdotal evidence and their estimates range from a low of 3 million to as high as 60 million1525 But with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 evidence from the Soviet archives finally became available The government archives record that about 800000 prisoners were executed (for either political or criminal offences) under Stalin while another 17 million died of privationcitation needed or other causes in the Gulags and some 389000 perished during kulak resettlement - a total of about 3 million victims Debate continues however16 since some historians believe the archival figures to be unreliable26 Also it is generally agreed that the data are incomplete since some categories of victim were carelessly recorded by the Soviets - such as the victims of ethnic deportations or of German population transfer in the aftermath of WWII Thus while some archival researchers have posited the number of victims of Stalin's repressions to be no more than about 4 million in total 171819 others believe the number to be considerably higher Russian writer Vadim Erlikman27 for example has made the following estimations: Executions 15 million Gulag 5 million Deportations 17 million (out of 75 million deported) and POW's and German civilians 1 million for a total of about 9 million victims of repression Some have also included the 6 to 8 million victims of the 1932-33 famine202829 In this case historians differ as to whether the famine was deliberate - as part of the campaign of repression against kulaks - or simply an unintended consequence of the struggle over forced collectivization (See also: Holodomor) Regardless it appears that a minimum of around 10 million surplus deaths (4 million by repression and 6 million from famine) are attributable to the regime with a number of recent books suggesting a probable figure of somewhere between 15 to 20 million Adding 6-8 million famine victims to Erlikman's estimates above for example would yield a figure of between 15 and 17 million victims Pioneering researcher Robert Conquest30 meanwhile has revised his original estimate of up to 30 million victims down to 20 million Others however continue to maintain that their earlier much higher estimates are correct31 On March 1 1953 after an all-night dinner with interior minister Lavrenty Beria and future premiers Georgi Malenkov Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev Stalin did not emerge from his room the next day having probably suffered a stroke that paralyzed the right side of his body Although his guards thought it odd that he did not rise at his usual time the next day they were under orders not to disturb him and he was not discovered until that evening He died four days later on March 5 1953 at the age of 74 and was buried on March 9 His daughter Svetlana recalls the scene as she stood by his death bed He suddenly opened his eyes and cast a glance over everyone in the room It was a terrible glance Then something incomprehensible and awesome happened He suddenly lifted his left hand as though he were pointing to something above and bringing down a curse upon all of us The next moment after a final effort the spirit wrenched its self free of the flesh Officially the cause of death was listed as a cerebral hemorrhage His body was preserved in Lenin's Mausoleum until October 31 1961 when his body was removed from the Mausoleum and buried next to the Kremlin walls as part of the process of de-Stalinization It has been suggested that Stalin was assassinated The ex-Communist exile Avtorkhanov argued this point as early as 1975 The political memoirs of Vyacheslav Molotov published in 1993 claimed that Beria had boasted to Molotov that he poisoned Stalin: I took him out Khrushchev wrote in his memoirs that Beria had immediately after the stroke gone about spewing hatred against Stalin and mocking him and then when Stalin showed signs of consciousness dropped to his knees and kissed his hand When Stalin fell unconscious again Beria immediately stood and spat In 2003 a joint group of Russian and American historians announced their view that Stalin ingested warfarin a powerful rat poison that inhibits coagulation of the blood and so predisposes the victim to hemorrhagic stroke (cerebral hemorrhage) Since it is flavorless warfarin is a plausible weapon of murder The facts surrounding Stalin's death will probably never be known with certainty39 His demise arrived at a convenient time for Beria and others who feared being swept away in yet another purge It is believed that Stalin felt Beria's power was too great and threatened his own Whether or not Beria or another usurper was directly responsible for his death it is true that the politburo did not summon medical attention for Stalin for more than a day after he was found Under Stalin's rule the Soviet Union was transformed from an agricultural nation into a global superpower at the cost of millions of lives The USSR's industrialization was successful in that the country was able to defend against and eventually defeat the Axis invasion in World War II though at an enormous cost in human life and in 1957 four years after Stalin's death to put into orbit the first ever artificial satellite Sputnik 1 However historian Robert Conquest and other Westerners claim that the USSR was bound for industrialization and that its speed along this course was not necessarily improved by Bolshevik influence It has also been argued that Stalin was partially responsible for the initial military disasters and enormous human causalities during WWII because Stalin eliminated many military officers during the purges and especially the most senior ones and rejected the massive amounts of intelligence warning of the German attack24 While Stalin's social and economic policies laid the foundations for the USSR's emergence as a superpower the harshness with which he conducted Soviet affairs was subsequently repudiated by his successors in the Communist Party leadership notably in the denunciation of Stalinism by Nikita Khrushchev in February 1956 In his Secret Speech On the Personality Cult and its Consequences delivered to a closed session of the 20th Party Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Khrushchev denounced Stalin for his cult of personality and his regime for violation of Leninist norms of legality However his immediate successors preserved major elements of Stalin's rule including the political monopoly of the Communist Party presiding over a command economy and a security service able to suppress dissent The large-scale purges of Stalin's era were never repeated but political repression continued albeit on a lesser scale

The present Cathedral stands on top of a former Constantinian Palace After Constantine's last visit to Trier in AD 3289 the palace was leveled in 330 and replaced by the largest Christian church in Antiquity about four times as big as the present-day church and covering the area of the Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady the Cathedral Square the adjoining garden and the houses almost up to the market n nToday's Cathedral still contains a Roman central section with the original walls rising up to a height of 26 m (86 ft) The huge fragment of a granite column next to the entrance to the Cathedral is another indication of the Roman origin of the building After destructions in the 5th and 9th centuries the remaining nucleus was enlarged by Romanesque additions - today the Cathedral with its three crypts its cloister Cathedral Treasury and Holy Robe Chapel displays architecture and artwork from more than 1650 years n n nThe south part of the Roman double church was torn down around 1200 and completely replaced by the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauen) Nothing above the surface is Roman any more but there are extensive excavations (not open to the public) underneath the church and several of the Gothic pillars stand on top of Roman column foundations The medieval church however was no longer a long three-aisled structure but a church-in-the-round whose cross-shaped vaulting with four corresponding portals in rounded niches was completed by eight rounded altar niches so that the floor plan resembles a twelve-petaled rose a symbol of the Virgin Mary the rosa mystica and reminiscent of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles The apostles as well as the twelve articles of the Apostle's Creed are painted on the twelve supporting columns completely visible only from one spot marked by a black stone The intriguing optics are matched by splendid acoustics n nOn the way out the visitor passes stone masons' marks and graffiti from seven centuries the elaborate west portal the Bishop's Palace the Kesselstatt Palace and the gate marking the end of the Cathedral Close

This church is also known as the Church of All Nations This church sits at the base of the Mount of Olives Built in 1924 on the traditional site of the Garden of Gethsemane the Basilica of the Agony enshrines a section of bedrock identified as the place where Jesus prayed alone in the garden on the night of his arrest Although it is not certain that this is the exact spot the setting does fit the Gospel description and the present church designed by the architect Antonio Barluzzi rests on the foundations of two earlier shrines: a 12th-century Crusader chapel abandoned in 1345 and a 4th-century Byzantine basilica destroyed by the earthquake in 746 (A rock on the way up to the Mount of Olives is mentioned by the Pilgrim of Bordeaux in 333 who identifies it as the place where Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus)

Our Lady of Flanders' Cathedral of Tournai is one of the most important architectural monuments in Belgium It has been classified both as a Wallonia's major heritage and as a World Heritage Site There was a diocese centered at Tournai from the late sixth century and this structure of local blue-gray stone occupies rising ground near the south bank of the Scheldt which divides the city of Tournai into two roughly equal parts Begun in the 12th century on even older foundations the building combines the work of three design periods with striking effect the heavy and severe character of the Romanesque nave contrasting remarkably with the Transitional work of the transept and the fully developed Gothic of the choir The transept is the most distinctive part of the building with its cluster of five bell towers and apsidal (semicircular) ends

The south part of the Roman double church was torn down around 1200 and completely replaced by the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauen) Nothing above the surface is Roman any more but there are extensive excavations (not open to the public) underneath the church and several of the Gothic pillars stand on top of Roman column foundations The medieval church however was no longer a long three-aisled structure but a church-in-the-round whose cross-shaped vaulting with four corresponding portals in rounded niches was completed by eight rounded altar niches so that the floor plan resembles a twelve-petaled rose a symbol of the Virgin Mary the rosa mystica and reminiscent of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles The apostles as well as the twelve articles of the Apostle's Creed are painted on the twelve supporting columns completely visible only from one spot marked by a black stone The intriguing optics are matched by splendid acoustics

Linda LeKinff and Jacques Schaffer at the Park West Gallery 40th Anniversary Gala Event Linda LeKinff was born in Paris from French and Brazilian parents She started her career as a painter at the age of 20 In the 1970s she traveled to India Tibet Mexico and Italy She lived and worked in Italy for twelve years learning the ancient techniques of tempera egg painting and the gold leaf method taught by masters in Florence and Livorno She also served an apprenticeship in wood engraving copper engraving and excelled in learning the modern techniques of acrylic and airbrush painting In Paris in 1975 she learned lithography meeting the artists Brayer Corneille and Lapique In 1976 she met Okamoto Taro the Japanese Picasso who introduced her to the sand and sumi technique In 1981 she spent six months in Morocco where she worked with Chabia the poetess of the naive abstraction movement She returned to school in south Tyrol where she became interested in painted polished and varnished woodwork using a special material made of casein She applied it to her paintings and continues to use this technique today but still keeps the traditional approach of painting in acrylic on canvas as well She began to create original serigraphs in the mid 1980s and uses this technique exclusively in the creation of her original graphic works She also creates hand-embellished versions of her serigraphs on canvas and wood and spends countless hours re-visiting each example to extract new artistic possibilities from every individual image LeKinff also expresses herself through watercolors or more precisely a mixing of greasy pastels ink and watercolor Recently she began to use collage She works without a model and her inspiration comes from travel her dreams reading and her imagination Her subjects are extremely diverse and include musical scenes poetic interpretations of people caught in an intimate moment of their lives and couples elegantly dressed out for a night on the town Her influences include the hidden sensuality of Braque the masterful drawing of Matisse the elegance of Modigliani and the precocious maturity of Egon Schiele who died at the age of 28 In 1998 LeKinff was selected as the official World Cup Artist For that distinction she created a painting that was minted into a commemorative coin by the French Government an honor never before offered to a living French artist In 2002 LeKinff participated in the Exposition of Prestige organized by the Ambassador of France in Japan and her work was exhibited in museums and art foundations in Japanese cities including: Tokyo-Bunkamura Museum Nagoya-Tenjin Salaria Art Foundation Osaka-Kirin Foundation Fukuoka-Loft Gallery Yokohama-RedBrick-Warehouse Recent Museum acquisitions include: Jeju Island Korea Moulin de Villedoin Velles France La Maison de Van Gogh Auvers sur Oise France Musee de Montmartre Paris France In 2005 Linda LeKinff participated in the following group shows in France: Salon Violet Salon d'autumn Salon des Artistes Francais Salon des Beaux Arts Salon ComparaisonnPhoto by Phil Parmet
