If Closing Time Tom Waits' debut album consisted of love songs set in a late-night world of bars and neon signs its follow-up The Heart of Saturday Night largely dispenses with the romance in favor of poetic depictions of the same setting On Diamonds on My Windshield and The Ghosts of Saturday Night Waits doesn't even sing instead reciting his verse rhythmically against bass and drums like a Beat hipster Musically the album contains the same mixture of folk blues and jazz as its predecessor with producer Bones Howe occasionally bringing in an orchestra to underscore the loping melodies Waits' songs are sometimes sketchier in addition to being more impersonal but (Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night and Semi Suite are the equal of anything on Closing Time Still with lines such as the clouds are like headlinesUpon a new front page sky and references to a 24-hour moon and champagne stars Waits' imagery is beginning to get florid and in material this stylized the danger of self-parody is always presentnIn the 1970s Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate lowlife characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle which he sang about in a raspy gravelly voice From the '80s on his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing Growing up in southern California Waits attracted the attention of manager Herb Cohen who also handled Frank Zappa and was signed by him at the beginning of the 1970s resulting in the material later released as The Early Years and The Early Years Vol 2 His formal recording debut came with Closing Time (1973) on Asylum Records an album that contained Ol' 55 which was covered by labelmates the Eagles for their On the Border album Waits attracted critical acclaim and a cult audience for his subsequent albums The Heart of Saturday Night (1974) the two-LP live set Nighthawks at the Diner (1975) Small Change (1976) Foreign Affairs (1977) Blue Valentine (1978) and Heart Attack and Vine (1980) His music and persona proved highly cinematic and starting in 1978 he launched parallel careers as an actor and as a composer of movie music He wrote songs for and appeared in Paradise Alley (1978) wrote the title song for On the Nickel (1980) and was hired by director Francis Coppola to write the music for One from the Heart (1982) which earned him an Academy Award nomination While working on that project Waits met and married playwright Kathleen Brennan with whom he later collaboratednnMoving to Island Records Waits made Swordfishtrombones (1983) which found him experimenting with horns and percussion and using unusual recording techniques The same year he appeared in Coppola's Rumble Fish and The Outsiders and in 1984 he appeared in the director's The Cotton Club In 1985 he released Rain Dogs In 1986 he appeared in Down By Law and made his theatrical debut with Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre in Frank's Wild Years a musical play he had written with Brennan An album based on the play was released in 1987 the same year Waits appeared in the films Candy Mountain and Ironweed In 1988 he released a film and soundtrack album depicting one of his concerts Big Time In 1989 he appeared in the films Bearskin: An Urban Fairytale Cold Feet and Wait Until Spring His work for the theater continued in 1990 when Waits partnered with opera director Robert Wilson and beat novelist William Burroughs and staged The Black Rider in Hamburg Germany In 1991 he appeared in the films Queens' Logic The Fisher King and At Play in the Fields of the Lord In 1992 he scored the film Night on Earth released the album Bone Machine which won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album appeared in the film Bram Stoker's Dracula and returned to Hamburg for the staging of his second collaboration with Robert Wilson Alice The The Black Rider was documented on CD in 1993 the same year Waits appeared in the film Short CutsnnA long absence from recording resulted in the 1998 release of Beautiful Maladies a retrospective of his work for Island In 1999 Waits finally returned with a new album Mule Variations The record was a critical success winning a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk album and was also his first for the independent Epitaph Records' Anti subsidiary A small tour followed but Waits jumped right back into the studio and began working on not one but two new albums By the time he emerged in the spring of 2002 both Alice and Blood Money were released on Anti Records Blood Money consisted of the songs from the third WilsonWaits collaboration that was staged in Denmark in 2000 and won Best Drama of the year After limited touring in support of these two endeavors Waits returned to the recording studio and issued Real Gone in 2004 The album marked a large departure for him in that it contained no keyboards at all focusing only on rhythm-stringed instruments

Jeffery Osborne started his music career in 1970 with a band called Love Men Ltd who would later become known as LTD2 The band recorded hit singles such as (Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again Concentrate On You Love Ballad and Holding On (When Love Is Gone) At first Osborne was a drummer but then became the lead vocalist He left LTD in late 1980 to start a solo careernIn 1982 Osborne released his self-titled debut album which featured two hit singles On The Wings Of Love and I Really Don't Need No Light peaking at 29 39 on the pop chart respectively This was followed up the next year by Stay With Me Tonight his first gold album (later reaching platinum album status) which spawned two more hits Don't You Get So Mad (25) and the title track (30) Stay With Me Tonight (Apr 1984 18) and On The Wings Of Love (June 1984 11) reach the UK Singles ChartnIn 1985 he wrote the lyrics to the Whitney Houston hit All at Once (music by Michael Masser) He appeared on USA for Africa's fundraising single We Are the World in 1985 He would later appear on Celebrity Duets in 2006 performing On The Wings Of Love with Alfonso Ribeiro Osborne lent his vocals to the theme song of the soap opera Loving from 1992 to 1995nnnnThis Lp is in shrink though not new I will call it Beautiful in every way The Vinyl is Glossy with no marks and plays Great Includednis the original sleeve with lyrics The Jacket is in shrink the siltiest of shelf ware is noticeable so I have to rate it VG++nnI ship all my albums cleaned with a VPI 1600 record machine and in a MOFI sleeve then packed in a cushioned record media box nEnjoy

This week we're doing a tribute to the band TAVARES BROTHERS This is a band who doesn't get much recognition anymore These brothers have been performing and singing for over 40 years The Tavares Brothers were born in New Bedford Massachussetts They started their career in the late 60's singing in local clubs in their hometown mainly covering RB Legends of that era They landed their first record contract with Capitol Records in 1973 Their first Single Release was the hit CHECK IT OUT That song was also the foundation and centerpiece for their first albumLP named CHECK IT OUT That LP was produced by Johnny Bristol That song CHECK IT OUT reached the top 10 and was the band's first top 40 Johnny Bristol also produced the hit The sound that lonely makes What gave Tavares their unique distinctive sound was their ability to harmonize amongst eachother and that the way they would change lead vocals throughout the song That was the foundation of their Tradmark early 70's sound After their first Album they released a second album which was produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter These producers were known for the success in producing the FOUR TOPP'S Keeper in the Castle albumThe first album they produced for Tavares was HARD CORE POETRY Lambert and Potter produced a second album which was Tavares's third LP IN THE CITY They (Lambert and Potter) helped Tavares get their first 1 RB Hit which was a remake of Daryl Hall and John Oates's She's gone Lambert and Potter also produced Tavares's first Top 10 pop hit It only takes a minute Although their first 3 albums were successful the release of their next album put them in a league of distinguished black artists in the 70's That album was SKY HIGH That album was produced by Freddie Perreu who at the time was working for Motown Records On this album the song Heaven must be missing an angel was released and the song Don't take away the music In 1978 and 1979 Tavares had Freddie Perreu produce two more LP's for them LOVE STORM and FUTURE BOUND But the band's biggest exposure was yet to come Their remake of The Bee Gee's More than a woman which was released on the movie SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER SOUNDTRACK gave them their first Grammy But on the flipside that song also gave them the sterotype of being a Disco Band They represented that sound through the 70's because that was the type of music that was in at the time but the brother's had something to prove They wanted to prove that they were more than just a disco band they wanted to show their fans that they had alot of Soul in them So they teamed up with Bobby Martin who was a veteran producer out of Philadelphia and made their LP MADAM BUTTERFLY This LP was their first Soul Lp that included the forgotten hit Never had a love like this before After this album they came out with the album SUPERCHARGED which was produced by Bobby Columby and David Foster The brothers wrote and produced their first album in 1980 named LOVE UPRISING After Love uprising the band self produced their next album named LOVELINE which featured some songs from a promising writer named Kashif After a long relationship with Capitol Records the band decided to go seperate directions and joined RCA Records They released two albums while under contract with RCA They were nNEW DIRECTIONS (Hence the name) and WORLDS OF MUSIC That LP had the hit song Penny for your thoughts and their final RB hit Deeper in Love What gave aided to Tavares's success throughout their musical career was their brotherly love they had amongst eachother the love they had for music and the love they had for their fans Today you can still see them perform mainly at Disco Revivals Only three of the five brothers are perfoming today but if you get the opportunity to see them in concert it would be a life long cherished moment because Tavares is a band who always brought uniqueness to the music industry and for that they deserve to be tributed to and mentioned for time to come n nIf you have any comments requests or questions regarding this tribute feel free to send an E-mail and I'll be more than willing to send information Gracias MR OLDSKOOL n nALBUMS: n nCHECK IT OUT 1974 nHARD CORE POETRY 1974 nIN THE CITY 1975 nSKY HIGH 1976 nLOVE STORM 1977 nFUTURE BOUND 1978 nMADDAM BUTTERFLY 1979 nSUPERCHARGED 1980 nLOVE UPRISING 1981 nNEW DIRECTIONS 1982 nWORLDS AND MUSIC 1983
