Nemesis was the goddess of divine indignation and retribution who punished excessive pride evil deeds undeserved happiness or good fortune and the absence of moderation She was the personification of the resentment aroused in both gods and mortals by those who committed crimes with impunity or who enjoyed undeserved luck n nTrue to her name which variously may be translated as 'she who distributes or deals out' 'due enactment' or 'divine vengeance' Nemesis was a feared and revered goddess With a discriminating eye she directed human affairs in such a way as to nmaintain equilibrium on earth Happiness and unhappiness were measured out by her with firm care being taken that happiness was not too frequent or too excessive If this happened Nemesis could bring about abrupt and catastrophic losses and suffering n nAs one who kept extravagant favors by Tyche (Luck Fortune) in check Nemesis was regarded as an avenging or punishing divinity Tyche was often irresponsible in handing out Luck and Fortune indiscriminately heaping gifts from her horn of plenty or depriving others of what they had n nBut woe be to the individual favored by Tyche who failed to give proper dues to the gods became too full of himself and boasted of his abundant riches or refused to improve the lot of his fellow humans by sharing his luck Indignant Nemesis would step in and snap the fool back to reality in short order humiliating him and causing his downfall n nAlong with Dike and Themis wise goddesses of Justice Nemesis was one of the assistants of Zeus the king of the Olympian gods who was regarded as the founder of law and order Her home was at Attic Rhamnus site of a magnificent sanctuary dedicated to the feared goddess of divine vengeance n nAbout sixty stades from Marathon as you go along the road by the sea to Oropus stands Rhamnus The dwelling houses are on the coast but a little way inland is a sanctuary of Nemesis the most implacable deity to men of violence It is thought that the wrath of this goddess fell also upon the foreigners who landed at Marathon For thinking in their pride that nothing stood in the way of their taking Athens they were bringing a piece of Parian marble to make a trophy convinced that their task was already finished n nOf this marble Pheidias made a statue of Nemesis and on the head of the goddess is a crown with deer and small images of Victory In her left hand she holds an apple branch in her right hand a cup on which are wrought Aethiopians As to the Aethiopians I could hazard no guess myself nor could I accept the statement of those who are convinced that the Aethiopians have been carved upon the cup because of the river Ocean For the Aethiopians they say dwell near it and Ocean is the father of Nemesis n nBeautiful Nemesis initially was portrayed without wings but in later descriptions she appeared as a winged goddess In her left hand she held an apple-branch rein lash sword or balance Her symbols and attributes were like those of Tyche: a wheel and a nship's rudder n nHer parents were said to be either Nyx (Night) alone without a father or the Titans Oceanus and Tethys: n nAlso deadly Nyx bare Nemesis to afflict mortal men n-Hesiod Theogony 223 n nAlexandros the Great was hunting on Mount Pagos near Smyrna and that after the hunt was over he came to a sanctuary of the Nemeseis and found there a spring and a plane-tree in front of the sanctuary growing over the water While he slept under the plane-tree it is said that the Nemeses appeared and bade him found a city there and remove into it the Smyranians from the old city So they migrated of their own free will nand believe in two Nemeses instead of one saying their mother is Nyx while the Athenians say that the father of the goddess in Rhamnos is Okeanos -Pausanias Description of Greece 753 n nNemesis was also known as Adrasteia which means 'inescapable' or 'Tracing Goddess' You could say that NemesisAdrasteia was the ancient Greeks' conscience nfor the goddess of retribution personified moral reverence for the natural order of things and provided a deterrence to wrongful action n nShe was also called Rhamnusia or Rhamnusis in honor of her sanctuary in Rhamnos n nNobody wanted to be hounded by Nemesis and even to this day her name means: n n1A source of harm or ruin: Uncritical trust is my nemesis n2Retributive justice in its execution or outcome: To follow the proposed course of action nis to invite nemesis n3An opponent that cannot be beaten or overcome n4One that inflicts retribution or vengeance n nThus you'll often read or hear quotes such as: n nThis is that ancient doctrine of nemesis who keeps watch in the universe and lets no offense go unchastised --Emerson n nA famous example of the retribution of Nemesis is the story of Narcissus This man was the beautiful son of the River Cephissus and the nymph Liriope He was so handsome that all women who beheld him at once fell in love with him The vain Narcissus however only had eyes for himself (you could say he suffered from I strain) and rebuffed all admirers n nOne such admirer was the nymph Echo who saw Narcissus and at once fell in love with him But the beautiful youth couldn't be bothered with the smitten one who slowly pined away leaving just the echo of her voice n nNemesis saw this and condemned the vain Narcissus to spend the rest of his days admiring his own reflection in the waters of a pool Eventually Narcissus died and was transformed into the flower that bears his name n nNemesis is considered by some to be the mother of Helen and the twins called the Dioscuri It's said that Zeus once fell in love with Nemesis (she had quite a bit of Aphrodite's beauty and some said she was just as gorgeous) and relentlessly pursued nher on land and sea Leery of his intentions Nemesis avoided Zeus by constantly changing forms finally transforming into a goose Not to be outdone Zeus in turn took the form of a swan and from the egg she laid came Helen the ultimate cause of the famous Trojan War n nBut some say that Helen was a daughter of Nemesis and Zeus for that she flying from the arms of Zeus changed herself into a goose but Zeus in his turn took the likeness of a swan and so enjoyed her and as the fruit of their loves she laid an egg and a certain shepherd found it in the groves and brought and gave it to Leda and she put it in a chest and kept it and when Helen was hatched in due time Leda brought her up as her own ndaughter n nHarry Thurston Peck in Harpers Dictionary of Classical Antiquities (1898) tells us that Nemesis was: n nA post-Homeric personification of the moral indignation felt at all derangements of the natural equilibrium of things whether by extraordinarily good fortune or by the arrogance usually attendant thereon According to Hesiod (Theog 223) she is the daughter of Night (Nyx) and with Aidos the goddess of Modesty left the earth on the advent of the Iron Age A legend makes her to have been by Zeus the mother of Helen and the Dioscuri As goddess of due proportion she hates every transgression of the bounds of moderation and restores the proper and normal order of things As in doing this she punishes wanton boastfulness she is a divinity of chastisement and vengeance n nShe enjoyed special honor in the Attic district of Rhamnus (where she was believed to be the daughter of Oceanus) and is often called the Rhamnusian goddess Her statue there (of which fragments were found in 1890) was said to have been executed by Phidias out of a block of Parian marble which the Persians had brought with them in presumptuous confidence to Marathon to erect a trophy of victory there She was also called Adrasteia that name appropriate only to the Phrygian Rhea-Cybel being interpreted as a Greek word with the meaning She whom none can escape She was also worshipped at Rome especially by victorious generals and was represented as a meditative thoughtful maiden with the attributes of proportion and control (a measuring-rod a bridle and a yoke) of punishment (a sword and scourge) and of swiftness (wings a wheel and a chariot drawn by griffins)

Sorry this just reads flat and doesnt give paragraph spacesDecember 2008 Dear ReaderHappy Holidays (Christmas Chanukah Solstice Festivus Bohdi Day Yule Boxing Day and the like) from Dave and Helen This is a generic card for you to enjoy (and you must enjoy it) that will tell you all the things that have happened in our lives since December of 2007 Let us start with January 2008 Dave quit his job at Sungard to become a fortune cookie writer Hes the guy that tells you these Confucius like quotes He enjoys his job except that he finds it difficult to cut each paper perfectly type on those tiny pieces of paper and then stuff it into an already closed fortune cookie He also does not like that his boss does not let him add in bed to the end of each fortune cookie as his boss sees it as inappropriate for the elderly children and the prudish Of course his dream job would be a Whiskey Ambassador One dayHelen began her 12th year of schooling and during the break briefly considered Clown College She figured another five years at Western for some degree to which she could get a job without the degree would be worth it She had had to explain the degree to people who did not put human and services together enough times that she could not back out now to explain what clown and college means In February Dave chose to move up to the Bellingham area to be near Helen The place he chose was about the same distance as he was before except north of Bellingham instead of south: he chose to live in Canada Helen followed him up in August and both chose to become Canadian citizens Then we voted Obama in November We embarked on a world wide adventure that summer to many different exciting places and went by many interesting modes of travel Our trip began with hitchhiking to Mexico where we rentedok stoleburros and in return got our wallets stolen After trying to deal with the Mexican Police (with only knowing little Mexican such as Where is your bathroom) we gave up trying to get our money back At least we still had our passports -- we were smart enough to leave them at home in case we were robbed Dave and Helen rode the burros up to our next destinationBarnstable Town MA We ditched the burros to go across Buzzards Bay because we figured it was safer than road since the police were on to us for stealing the burros Little did we know they would have submarines on our asses No pun intended Our next destination was going to be Ireland so we used Google Maps to get there Google advised us to swim so we did Our arms grew tired but we kept on Once in Ireland we were greeted by leprechauns of course The most exciting part of our trip to Ireland was finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow Ok so it was a Hersheys Pot of Gold box of chocolate but it was still something We were famished after our dip in the pond so anything was good After our world wide trip we returned home and decided on adding a new member to our family This is in addition to our three wonderful children Molly Jake and Sebastian We decided to buy a puppy for our three beautiful smart oh-so-amazing children Our puppys name is Ginger and she is just the most perfect dog in the entire world We of course saved her from a tragic situation because we are just wonderful people like that She would have died if it wasnt for us This untrained pup with a broken leg needed a forever home so we rescued her from the horrible pound she was in She adapted quickly because we are wonderful and amazing owners Her leg has heeled and she is so well trained that she even uses the toilet properly and fetches us the morning paper She also warns us when the neighbor girl falls into the well five times this month alone When will she stop falling in Of course when the puppy becomes a grown dog the children will outgrow it and who will become responsible for her The children will not care for the dog and we parents only bought her for the children so what are we to do Finally on to the children Molly is excelling in her third grade class and receives straight As She is also taking gymnastics swimming soccer tennis is a black belt at Karate spins dishes on sticks and we just went to Portland Oregon to watch her win a gymnastic competition-her 23rd one this year Jake is a fantastic 6 year old who is so giving and so caring Yes Helen did give birth to him Whether or not Dave is the father is going to be one of our little secrets He is doing well in school Never mind that he got kicked out of class and is the only six year old to be expelled from Sunny Place Elementary School This letter is all about bragging about how wonderful our life is and how fantastically we raised our children so regardless of what theyre really like we will present them in the best light possible Sebastian turned 16 last week and has already wrecked the brand new car we bought him So we bought him a new one He enjoys being called Seb lately as he does not like the name we gave him because it reminds him of the crab in the Little Mermaid (after all we did name him after the movie) and apparently Seb is cool with the teenagers these days It was a cute name when he was bornso what went wrong Oh yeah he grew up He is on the basketball team but is not very good at all We are expecting a fourth child (because we love to reproduce and cant get enough of it) any day now and are naming her Elektronik Deevise Moonshadow because its all the rage naming our children something odd I forget we arent celebrities but we certainly like thinking we are Hate to cut this short but our obnoxious kids are fighting over the Wii again We have Playstation Xbox Gameboy Sega Genesis Nintendo Leap Frog a PSP and a Nintendo DS to choose from too Why wont Molly play with one of the 500 Hannah Montana things Mommy and Daddy bought for her We are off to grumble on how she could have so much Hannah Montana stuff and not even realize we are to blame for contributing to our childrens merchandise obsessions And we also wonder why our children are not going outside to play with all those video game systems we bought for themCant wait until we can write about our fantastic life next Jackie Marcelo------------These shoes are the types of shoes I am required to wear to work As I observed my office last week I noticed that not a lot of women wear flat shoes they are all mostly in heels I asked my Director of Human Resources for a copy of the rules of dress code in the work place and clear as day it says dressy shoes preferably heels or low pumps So heres my question why are women required to wear high heels in the work place and men can wear flat shoes Obviously I am not saying that men should wear high heels too thats ridiculous But high heels are hard on your feet and make your back hurt Heels to some women can be torturous or they might not be able to walk in them Advertisements have created the illusion that high heels are sexy but why does being sexy or being beautiful have to involve pain Or for that matter make you look like a sex object According to the book You May Ask Yourself p101 it says One classic example is a photo that shows a womens body in a garbage can with only her legs and a fantastic pair of high heels on her feet visible What does that mean Does that mean that does those shoes are to die for Does that mean that women are trash or belong in trash cans In the book its states that the shoes are to die for but an ad like this can means many things If I were to see this ad I would be personally offended I attempted to look it up on Google because I was interested in looking at this image but had no luck

Some of the photos are of the Tulum Ruins we visited right down the beach from our resort There are also a lot of photos of the Chichnitze ruins Ik Kil was a beautiful cenote we visited that was so awesome It is hard to understand the size of it from the photos until you see one with people in it It was huge The tree roots hanging down into the water were so interesting Water was cascading down in different places as well I did not get in the water but I was told it was around 72 degrees The foliage around this place was awesome It was a little area of paradise in the middle of the jungle n n n nWe also visited the little town of Pueblo Tulum and walked up and down the main strip that was lined with several local vendors selling homemade goods and homegrown fruits and vegetables yes I took photos of the butcher shop that was open air but I did not get the dog in the pic Also of the internet cafes that I thought were very odd and a few other interesting buildings The people were nice and smiled at us but most did not speak English there Looking down the streets beyond the commerce blocks were very dirty and deteriorated It was very sad when people would smile at you and have so few teeth We passed a public help building as well that had people lined up down the sidewalk I did not take a picture of them as I felt it would be rude n n n nWe rode in a taxi for an hour to get to Playa del Carmen and walked the 12 block 5th Avenue shoppingrestaurant district It was interesting A lot of the same items were for sale in many shops and street people trying anything to get you in to buy their stuff They had a lot of these pharmacies where you could buy anything you wanted without a prescription which was so weird We also had about 10 people come up to us asking if we wanted to buy drugs (the illegal kind) It was very disturbing I was definitely ready to leave this area after 3 hours even though you could see the beach and the ferry to Cozumel was a couple of blocks over It was annoying people yelling at you nonstop trying to sell you crap Lady lady come see my stuff n n n nWe went through a lot of little villages that were very run down and depressing We spent a couple of hours in a taxi and talking with the driver about his life was one of the most interesting conversations Just to learn about how his life really is gives me such a different perspective on things His name was Humberto (I think) married 16 years 2 boys 1 girl taught English by a friend just by repeating phrases and conversation His friend told him he would have better work opportunities if he learned English He used to be the bellboy at the resort we were staying at but then he had the chance to take the taxi driver test Now he works 5AM to 10PM 6 days a week He does not have a car but he said if he works for the taxi company for 5 or 6 years he will have a chance to get a car to take home so his boys can also drive the taxi and earn money for the family So he was very excited about that opportunity He was very proud of his daughter for placing third in all of the Yucatan Peninsula area in an academic competition He was a very sweet man and was very happy go lucky He even had some homemade cds with American music on them he played while we were in the car I wish I had gotten his address I would have mailed him some new ones with updated music ( I still might try to get his address I still remember his cab number n n n nAfter seeing the conditions in Mexico behind all of the fancy resorts and tourist areas I understand why so many Mexicans want to migrate to the US They just want better opportunities for their families I do not blame them at all n n n nAll in all it was a good trip even though I got sick I didnt drink the water I am not sure what got me but I am guessing some food that was not prepared properly at the natural water park Xel Ha or maybe I inhaled some of the water when we were snorkeling We had a good time and we both learned a lot It is a beautiful place but definitely has its share of social issues caring for the people that live there Hopefully one day it can improve n n n nWell I know I went on for a while I hope you enjoy the pics and the stories

Shutters glossy red eyes looked over the snowy landscape She saw the people scattering around as the wind gnawed at their pale faces with a red nose in the middle Kiku was standing at her side Shutters head was brown that ran off into a creamy white with golden bracelets and dark brown horns She fiddled with her golden and orange tips after fixing her see through light blue sleeves Racco also stood near her He had a dark white-grey pelt with a black raccoon like face belly and a black tail with the same white-grey color on its tip Kiku was white too with bits of black grey and brown on her Her ears were longer than most but her eyes flashed a beautiful golden yellow Shutters goal in life was to create a Murrah from DNA extracted from dead animals humans and other Murrah She would often send Racco out to collect the animals and Kiku out to get the humans She while waiting for them to return would freeze extra DNA and fiddle with failed experiments The failed would squeak faintly or stir in their sleep Shutter felt bad for these They would make wonderful and cute pets if they only would wake so she could document them But they only slightly opened their eyes when she would feed them some warm milk or rock them in her arms Shutter was careful with the failed She treated them like they were her children and cared for them They hardly looked like Murrah though they had horns and fur like her self Shutter thought she would show her failed to Kiku and Racco She hoped for the best that they would except and care for the failed with her but dreaded the worst that they would shun and try to kill the failed she would have to find out one day though This very day is where we start out little tail of Shutter Racco Kiku and the failed Now what shall I name you failed Shutter paced and looked over the squeaking failed Well from now on you are not to be called failed so often I shall name your breed the Kifrons and shall call your breed by such name from now on Her eyes looked over the Kifrons One caught her eye He was a pale blue with black hair and body tips When she gently picked him up he slightly opened his eyes to reveal bright green orb like eyes sighed and then opened his mouth slightly waiting for his food Shutter did as he wanted and fed him some warm milk from a baby bottle I shall name youYukio Her eyes were soft as Yukio squirmed in her arms and fell asleep You shall be the first Kifron to exit this lab Shutter opened the door to the living room Kiku Shutter come here for a second please She called as she shifted Yukio so he sat on her arm with his paws on her shoulder What is it She said rubbing her eyes What in the world do you have She shouted bringing Racco to her side She was staring at Yukio who whimpered in his mothers grasp This is Yukio Happy Hero Chrysanthemum do not yell youre scaring him Shutter scolded Kiku with her English name Ok do you have any more Kiku asked hushing the barking Racco If you do you have to show me them She insisted Yes I have more Four more to be exact two girls one boy and the newest one that is not old enough to tell Hold Yukio while I go get them Shutter handed over the pup and went to get two more Next she came out with one grey-blue female that had beautiful red colored markings named Chou butterfly and one with the exact opposite markings and colors named Chouko butterfly child She next brought out the small unknown gendered baby named Kin which means Golden And last but not least she brought out Takashi praiseworthy These are all of them Shutter commented as Kiku and Racco swooned over the Kifrons This reader is a lie Shutter had three more Kifrons in her lab Three quite evil ones the only ones to fully awaken who named themselves Adam Mankind Eve Life and Eden paradise These three took the looks of humanoids Not grown or small but they had the young face of innocents Adam was a male He was the kind of evil that brought out the bad side of human nature so as to make people become withdrawn un-trustworthy or even suicidal Eve was the evil that would promise the life of a loved one She would prove healing powers by bringing back bugs or birds Eden the kind of evil that would create a paradise for the human and promise this dream world if he or she carries out a series of tasks each more horrible than the last She kept these three Kifrons in quarantine away from everyone except the other bad Kifrons so they could not contaminate the minds of others These three were dangerous They took the looks of small five year old humans dressed in hospital gowns and bracelets She examined these three regularly Each day they would have a fit because she wouldnt pick them up Sure they looked five and could do the things five year olds could do like walk and spell but they were only 2 months old So they craved the care of a mother Being picked up binkies bottles blankets and stuffed animals Shutter yearned to care for them like children to be able to cuddle and swoon over them But she knew this may never happen with the progress they were making Kiku looked at Yukio crawling on the floor after a rather frightened Racco She giggled Get back over here you silly boy She said picking him up Gwahhff He cooed examining her with his green orb eyes He sneezed and then pulled at Kikus ear When Yukio let go he silently looked over the room fiddling with his fingers Fwaghh He cried as Shutter opened the door to come into the living room Fwaghh Fwaghh He cried pawing for his mother Kiku stop making that awkward noise this instant Shutter said When Demeter is the great Olympian Goddess of Agriculture Grain and Bread the prime sustenance of mankind She also presided over the foremost of the Mystery Cults which promised its intiates the path to a blessed afterlife Demeter is depicted as a mature woman often crowned and holding sheafs of wheat and and a torch nIn Greek mythology Demeter was the most generous of the great Olympian goddesses The Greek goddess Demeter was an ancient goddess beloved for her service to mankind in giving them the gift of the harvest the reward for cultivation of the soil n nAlso known as the Roman goddess Ceres Demeter was the goddess of the harvest and was credited with teaching humans how to grow preserve and prepare grain Demeter was thought to be responsible for the fertility of the land n nShe was the only one of the Greek goddesses who was involved on a day-to-day basis in the lives of the common folk While others occasionally dabbled in human affairs when it suited their personal interests or came to the aid of special mortals they favored the goddess Demeter was truly the nurturer of mankind n nDemeter also was the only one of the Greek goddesses who could truly empathize with the human experience of suffering and grief having experienced it fully herself nThe goddess Demeter is best known for her fierce defense of her daughter Persephone who was also known as the child Kore (or Cora) Persephone's father was Zeus the mighty ruler of the Olympians The goddess Demeter had been one of his early consorts long before his marriage to Hera n n Persephone was an obedient cheerful girl who had a happy childhood playing with her cousins Artemis and Athena Reaching adolescence she was carefree and spirited often dancing playfully and picking wildflowers in the meadow near her home n nPersephone's youthful beauty drew the attention of Hades the god of the underworld and he could not help falling in love with her One day as Persephone reached over to pick a flower the earth opened and the arm of Hades reached up from the underworld n nAnd so Hades abducted her dragging her back to his kingdom n nHearing Persephone's screams the goddess Demeter rushes to the meadow but cannot find Persephone Carrying a torch Demeter traveled the world day and night never eating or resting searching futilely for her daughter nPoseidon god of the sea noticed the goddess Demeter as she traveled and pursued her with amorous intent Then Demeter tried to fool him by changing herself into a mare and hiding herself in the middle of a herd of horses but he was not fooled Poseidon saw through Demeter's disguise turned himself into a stallion and took her at his will n nWhen Demeter continued her journey in search of her daughter she met an old and poor man who was gathering firewood who invited her to return to his home to eat supper with his family and to rest on her journey When she told him that she was searching for her daughter he wished her success and told her that he understood her suffering since his son lay dying at home Demeter goddess of compasion changed her mind and went with the kindly man stopping only once to gather some poppies by the path Entering his humble home Demeter went straight away to the boy's bedside and kissed the boy lovingly on the cheek Immediately the pallor left his face and his breathing eased as Demeter's love had restored the son to full health nAlthough it was the custom of the Greek goddesses and gods to become very vindictive toward anyone who failed to honor them in a dignified fashion Demeter was such a kind goddess that she seldom utilized this privilege One of the few times was when she stopped on her travels to quench her thirst by drinking from a spring and heard a man named Ascaelabus laughing at the sound of her gulping the fresh water Embarrassed and angry at the man for being so rude Demeter turned him into a lizard n n Resuming her search she soon encountered Hecate goddess of the crossroads who advised her to speak with Helio goddess of the sun reasoning that since she had been riding her chariot (the sun) through the sky that day she had surely seen what had happened to Persephone Helio told the goddess Demeter what she had seen and that Persephone was now ensconced as Hades' wife and Queen of the Underworld She also gave her the shocking news that Zeus himself had sanctioned the marriage giving Hades permission to abduct Persephone nUnderstandably the goddess Demeter felt betrayed Renouncing her divine duties that included bringing fertility to the land Demeter left Mount Olympus swearing that the earth would remain barren until her daughter was returned to her She took refuge in the city of Eleusis Disguised as an old woman the goddess Demeter was met the city rulers two young daughters at the well and they liking her immensely invited her to return to their home to meet their mother There she met their mother who was cuddling her infant son This must have stirred Demeter's longing for her abducted daughter horribly Demeter became profoundly depressed almost catatonic eyes gazing off into the distance and unwilling or unable to even speak n n Everyone tried to all that they knew to cheer their guest but it was to no avail Eventually one of the household servants a middle-aged maid named Baubo came and sat in front of Demeter and started talking mostly making humorous comments (most likely of the male-bashing sort) some of them quite risque Encouraged when she saw the beginnings of a smile forming on Demeter's grief stricken face Baubo hiked up her skirt and mooned the goddess Demeter responded with a deep belly laugh that brought her out of the deep depression Her good nature now restored Demeter was soon hired to work as a nursemaid to the infant son of the city's ruler nCaring for him lovingly feeding him on the nectar and ambrosia of the gods Demeter grew very attached to the young Demophoon and decided to make him immortal But just as Demeter was holding his feet over the fire (the ritual which would transform him into an Olympian god Demophoon's mother entered the room n nMistakenly believing that Demeter was about to burn her son she began to scream The goddess Demeter then dropped her disguise revealing the beautiful goddess that she truly was and berated the mother for her stupidity in stopping the ritual that would have given her son immortality n nIn addition Demeter demanded that a temple be built in her honor This was done and the goddess Demeter remained there sitting alone in the darkness once again depressed and grieving for her lost daughter n nAll this time with the goddess Demeter refusing to function the land grew barren and the harvests ceased the earth saw a winter that did not end Zeus finally opens his eyes to what was happening and sent messengers to apologize and coax the goddess Demeter to return n nDemeter however remained adamant that she would not return until Persephone was rescued Finally Zeus gave in and sent Hermes to command Hades to release Persephone nPersephone upon hearing the news rejoiced for she had missed her mother sorely As she was leaving Hades offered her a pomegranate to eat Persephone had refused all food while she had been in the underworld and was surely hungry n nAlthough she undoubtedly knew that those who ate anything in the underworld were not allowed to return to the earth Persephone accepted Hades' gift eating only the seeds Hermes borrowed Hades chariot and stallions and flew Persephone home to her mother as Zeus had ordered n nDemeter was not pleased that Persephone had eaten the pomegranate seeds and would have to return to the underworld for four months during each year but was otherwise overjoyed to be reunited with her daughter n nHappily Demeter resumed her divine duties and restored the fertility of the earth Each year the goddess Demeter longs for her absent daughter and withdraws her favors from the earth for a period we know as winter but Persephone returns each spring to end her desolation nOnce Persephone was safely returned albeit for only a third of a year the Greek goddess Demeter decided to reside in her temple in Eleusis where she had enjoyed the welcome and support of her friends during her long search for Persephone n n There she developed the Eleusian mysteries a series of profound religious ceremonies that taught her initiates how to live joyfully and how to die without fear nThe story of Greek goddess Demeter illustrates the tremendous capacity of a woman to love and nurture within her own family and the world at large n nIt also reminds us to stand firm for what is good and right even in the face of adversity when powerful forces are aligned against us T n nhe I have a confession to make This is Alesha one of the Chad Valley DesignaFriends but not my original Alesha whom I normally photograph Poor Alesha's hair had got really crazy and frizzy and it was driving me up the wall I made the mistake of brushing it when I first had her only to find that you shouldn't brush the curly haired DesignaFriends On top of that I was always putting her in hats and in the end it really messed up her beautiful hair Anyway on a day out this week I made the decision to buy a new Alesha and here she is She looks gorgous in a new Ebay outfit from America It consists of white leggings white Tee with a heart design and a very cool denim jacket The outfit is finshed off with some very unusual metallic sandals which have zips at the back I love this set and I think Alesha looks stunning

When I read this part of this story Thomas: Heh Oh you should see these new scripts Gordon I spend a lot of time with Emily in them In one I have to pull her all the way across the island Gordons face turns red then he steams away to cry in a siding this part made me decide to write this story when I told him my deepest yet very emotional feelings for Gordon and became his only girlfriend who completely understands him and his guardian angel too As Carly (Cmara) and I in our hero forms were wandering around in Sodor when I saw poor Gordon with tears running down his face I loved Gordon with all my heart but too nervous to tell him that so when I saw him like this my eyes kind of moist a bit but Carly boldly said that this is the time I must tell Gordon my secret feelings for him Well Carly's right it's now or never to confess as I walked up to him and I rubbed my hand very gently on his cheek I asked him Why are you crying Gordon answered quietly to me When I hear awful stories about Emily since I think Emilys sexy I mean have you seen those wheels Id kill myself if she wentaway I put my hand over my mouth feeling even more sorry for him And above that he continued I get the feeling that the other engines even the diesels just doesn't think I'm important and just tease me calling me names and and before he could say anything else I replied I strongly know how you feel and you are extremely important to me Gordon gasped Yes I continued I do think you're important to me and I've got a major secret besides my hero form As Gordon waited for me to tell him what my major secret was Carly who was watching took out a radio and switched it to CD mode Carly propped an Evanescence CD into the radio and played the special track for this very moment: an Evanescence song called Good Enough sung by Amy Lee Amy Lee (radio): Under your spell again I can't say no to you crave my heart and its bleeding in your hand I can't say no to you Shouldn't have let you torture me so sweetly now I can't let go of this dream I can't breathe but I feel Good enough I feel good enough for you As the music played Thomas Percy Emily even Diesel came to see what's going on and they watched with Carly quietly as I looked at Gordon as my love in my life his very strong body his paint shining blue and his very handsome gray face which made me feel definetly in love with him Diesel whispered to Carly Make it look passionate Carly even though I'm a diesel but I do love to see some passion She shushed him and said Watch as the music continues to play Amy Lee (radio): Drink up sweet decadence I can't say no to you and I've completely lost myself and I don't mind I can't say no to you Shouldn't have let you conquer me completely now I can't let go of this dream can't believe that I feel Good enough I feel good enough its been such a long time coming but I feel good I bravely said My major secret is that I love you Gordon was surprised he had never encountered a heroine girl who actually has secretive feelings for Gordon like me maybe even love him which I do and he answered I love you too I knew every fairy tales has love moments so I did something for him that he'll really know I do love him: I gave Gordon a perfect kiss on his lips We closed our eyes very slowly and our kiss of true love was becoming very VERY beautiful Amy Lee (radio): and I'm still waiting for the rain to fall pour real life down on me cause I can't hold on to anything this good enough am I good enough for you to love me too Carly and the engines watched us kissing passionately and we (including the trucks) sighed happily This is very beautiful Carly said Emily Then Thomas added Yeah looks like Gordon's finally got a love of his life Percy let out one tiny tear of joy since this is the time of love between me and Gordon Amy Lee (radio): so take care what you ask of me cause I can't say no The music has ended and I felt very happy that I finally told him my secret feelings and as for Gordon he now felt better and also very proud that he has finally found a girl who loves him very much I smiled and said I'll always be there for you Gordon sighed grandly once more that he'll never forget this very day that I've expressed my love with one special kiss And that's how it is

I got this swallow on my rib cage over a year ago Before I turned 18 I knew I wanted to get a bird tattoo I planned out a weekend that I would get it done but I never really found a bird I was totally in love with A couple weeks before I decided to get mine My Mom and her lesbian partner (who helped raise me for 11 years) were also getting a tattoo of the Hawaiian saying One in Love My Mom decided she wanted to have birds next to it (she didnt know I was planning on getting a bird tattoo myself) One day she showed me these pictures she had found of old sailor jerry tattoos and found these two beautiful birds As soon as I saw it I knew that was the bird I wanted n nNow not only do I have this swallow but my Mom and her partner have the same swallow too My sister also has the Picasso Peace dove on her hip Now my bird tattoo is a symbol of the love in my family I think birds also really fit all of our personalities (that is that birds symbolize) n nI named mine Maurice after the Steve Miller Band song The Joker

anger jealousy and resentmentnn You learn how to say I was wrong and to forgive people for their own human frailties You learn to build bridges instead of walls and about the healing power of love as it is expressed through a kind word a warm smile or a friendly gesture And at the same time you eliminate any relationships that are hurtful or fail to uplift and edify you You stop working so hard at smoothing things over and setting your needs aside You learn that feelings of entitlement are perfectly OK and that it is your right to want or expect certain things And you learn the importance of communicating your needs with confidence and grace You learn that the only cross to bear is the one you choose to carry and that eventually martyrs are burned at the stake Then you learn to distinguish between guilt and responsibility and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to Say NO You learn that you don't know all the answers it's not your job to save the world and that sometimes you just need to Let Gonn Moreover you learn to look at people as they really are and not as you would want them to be and you are careful not to project your neediness or insecurities onto a relationship You learn that you will not be more beautiful more intelligent more lovable or important because of the man on your arm or the child that bears your name You learn that just as people grow and change so it is with love and relationships and that that not everyone can always love you the way you would want them to So you stop appraising your worth by the measure of love you are given And suddenly you realize that it's wrong to demand that someone live their life or sacrifice their dreams just to serve your needs ease your insecurities or meet your standards and expectations You learn that the only love worth giving and receiving is the love that is given freely without conditions or limitations And you learn what it means to love So you stop trying to control people situations and outcomes You learn that alone does not mean lonely and you begin to discover the joy of spending time with yourself and on yourself Then you discover the greatest and most fulfilling love you will ever know - Self Love And so it comes to pass that through understanding your heart heals and now all new things are possiblenn Moving along you begin to avoid Toxic people and conversations And you stop wasting time and energy rehashing your situation with family and friends You learn that talk doesn't change things and that unrequited wishes can only serve to keep you trapped in the past So you stop lamenting over what could or should have been and you make a decision to leave the past behind Then you begin to invest your time and energy to affect positive change You take a personal inventory of all your strengths and weaknesses and the areas you need to improve in order to move ahead you set your goals and map out a plan of action to see things throughnn You learn that life isn't always fair and you don't always get what you think you deserve and you stop personalizing every loss or disappointment You learn to accept that sometimes bad things happen to good people and that these things are not an act of God but merely a random act of fatenn And you stop looking for guarantees because you've learned that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected and that whatever happens you'll learn to deal with it And you learn that the only thing you must truly fear is the great robber baron of all time - I used Chelsea Handler's book to save my beach spot every morning in Punta Cana -- most travelers to the Dominican Republica and the Caribbean are foreigners these days and not American -- Bush scrwed us up so bad we can't travel -- but they weren't sure how to handler chelsea so no one ever took my book :) Here's my column on it: A Gold Medal Olympic Vacation Competition n nBy RAY HANANIA n nThe competition for the Gold Medal was Olympic Not in Beijing but on the beaches of Punta Cana where I spent a week researching Cuban cigars and teaching my son the basics of how to survive in the real world n nEvery morning I would get to the beach at 6:30 in a fierce race with teams representing Russia China Italy France and Spain and a field of 130 others There were only 10 perfect palm tree covered cabanas on the beach and you had to get there early to claim one n nWhats the point of going to a beautiful paradise beach if you are going to schelp in at 11 and plop down on a towel in the sand n nI can report that Ive won the competition every morning Boo-rah for the American team Well I guess Im considered about as American as Yao Ming (OK Hes an exception a Chinese-born athlete who plays for the Houston Rockets basketball team In the Olympics he plays for China) Did you ever notice that when mentioning American athletes of certain ethnic and racial backgrounds they always mention their race but never the ethnicity of Americans like Michael Phelps n nAnyway back to my own Olympic Gold Medal competition in Punta Cana at the Bavara Princess Beach n nTheres an art to securing lounge chairs and a cabana Its the same no matter where you go in the Caribbean except that the world has changed Dramatically It used to be that places like this were filled with arrogant and obnoxious American tourists n nWell thats changed Today the resorts in the Caribbean are filled with Europeans Russians and Asians enjoying the fact that President Bush screwed up our economy with the stupid Iraq war (OK thats my last political reference Just kidding) Our dollar is worth less than a peso and I dont care what Central American country you visit It buys nothing n nBut I wouldnt let that deter me I rushed out research in hand and made my way in a 3600-foot dash for the beach And every morning beat the Russian by a nose (thats where being Arab comes in handy I guess) And the French the Chinese and the guy with the full body tatoo n nThey were right behind me and there was no courtesy good mornings or hellos In any language We were all there for one purpose Keep our wives from screaming at us when we didnt get the best spots n nThere is an art to saving seats You reserve them at 6:30 am and dont get back until around 11 after breakfast so you have a lot of faith that despite the tourists (any ethnicity) they will be there when you return n nYou keep the towels from the day before and lay them on the lounge chair stretched out and tucked in the niche in the back of the head rest and push that down to lock it in 50 Points n nThen you put a book youve either already read and dont care if its stolen or one no one will touch I had Chelsea Handlers book (Chelsea Lately) and made sure the cover faced out every morning (Actually Chelseas book is hilarious but none of the foreigners could figure out who she was so it was a safe bet not to get stolen) 2535 points n nThen to play to the sympathy of the crowd I put my sons little sand buckets and shovels on the chair 1915 points n nBoo-Rah n nThis happened every morning like clockwork and as I said representing the American team WE WON 945 points (If I can add right) n nNo one said hi Mainly because we couldnt speak anyone elses language I think But still The first morning I tried and said Isnt it like a vacation Your wife makes you run out at 6:30 to grab a lounge chair too And the guy walking fast next to me 25 mph just grunted with a Spanish accent Thats when I knew the competition was real n nAnd all of the men sat out there looking at each other Until exactly 7:22 am when the tall blond haired Swedish woman jogged past n nTopless n nSlowly n nPriceless n n n nE-mail this column to a friend n n n-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- n n n(Ray Hanania can be reached at rayhananiacomcastnet His weekly TV Show 30 Minutes is broadcast every Friday at 7 pm on Channel 19 in Oak Lawn Burbank and Bridgeview) n n nServing readers in Orland Park Tinley Park Frankfort Mokena Palos Park Palos Hills Palos Heights Oak Lawn Burbank Bridgeview
