I've never seen the movie 'Lost in Translation' So I can't recommend it But I imagine it's everything it should be And nothing else I want to say there's a lot of things I love a lot of things I've learned to take no opinion to a lot of things I don't understand There are times when I question every aspect of a circumstance for days and days without rest But the people I care about I usually have no questions for I accept them as they are I love them as they are Martin Luther King Jr is my hero I have a sister who would often and will probably still point out that women were last in gaining the right to vote in America I usually don't think about this and to be honest there are so many things I stopped thinking about I'd have to check if the order of her claim is accurate Usually when I think of the first thing the second isn't my concern It's a different subject altogether and I don't know how or why I would integrate it into my thinking when it's brought up But there are rare times I recall those ambiguous moments and I realize her upset as something I do understand In moments when it's related somehow to my own I'm usually endlessly more empathetic than that I don't always understand the subject matter Part 2 There are pieces of imagery and one in particular that I always took with cheerful humor 'A rock thing' But time went on and I realized that very particular image seemed hurtful to me I still defended there being a necessity for it how I understood that foreign bands don't sell well here and any publicity is vital I understood that But it wasn't exactly an isolated incident There were so many images And there was so much hype I think the point was dropped on along the road somewhere And then too even my sister remembered the 'married' man with a 'child' wanted an 'American girlfriend' We like things here and we like them usually as people more normal than us like a nice day We don't know what 'fandom' is so he didn't lose

Oranges are Not the Only Fruit women are portrayed in both similar and different ways The first major similarities shared by the books are the lead characters both Celie and Jeanette are young girls living with their adoptive guardians and both girls are involved in lesbian relationships at some point in the story These similarities in the heroines of the stories provide the basis for my investigation as they are a catalyst for all the major examples of women and power throughout both novelsIn The Color Purple women are treated as slaves and sexual objects This view is reflected well in Celies relationship with Mr he marries her so she has to look after his children and frequently rapes her The almost complete opposite of this is Sofia and Harpos relationship where Sofia is dominant and commands Harpos every movementIn Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit there are no particularly extreme signs of sexual or sexist domination by either gender There are however instances where one character of the novel or a group of characters are shown to discriminate against other characters In both The Color Purple and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit the most important characters are female Many of the major decisions which make up the stories are made by women In both novels the lead characters are greatly affected by the teachings and views of other women in the books In The Color Purple the women who influence Celie and her decisions are Shug Avery Nettie and Sofia Being portrayed at the start of the novel as her protector Nettie is the first person to show Celie ways in which she can become independent Although these first lessons seem to be just childish fun at the start of the novel they provide a basis for Walker to expand upon with other characters When Nettie fights off Mrs sexual advances she shows that women are not just objects for men to use at their own will After Nettie is thrown out of Mrs house letter 11 we dont hear much about her until later in the novel letter 51 Now she is not Celies protector but is instead showing her power and independence by trying to save the Olinka village in Africa Soon after Nettie makes a disappearance from the novel Walker introduces us to an even more influential character Shug Avery When Shug first arrives at Mrs home she is sick with nasty woman disease this possibly being Walkers euphemism for a sexually transmitted infection If this was the case Shugs first appearance in the story would be also the first time she is shown to have traditionally masculine qualities by being promiscuous Much unlike the majority of the women in The Color Purple Shug is not oppressed by men she doesnt allow herself to be dominated by anyone Her strong personality is a major part of her overall effect in the book her looks and career being mainly symbols of her power over the opposite sexThroughout the novel Shug has different roles many of which are because of the parts she plays towards Celie At various points in the book Shug plays the part of Celies mother sister friend lover and teacherThe lessons Shug teaches Celie are factors in the climax of the novel Without the influence of Shug Celie would still be the downtrodden passive character she is in the first few letters By learning to her own sexuality and voice Celie manages to recover her identity and eventually even believe in a different religious viewLike Shug Sofia is a character who refuses to be dominated by anyone whether they are white men or anyone elseAfter confronting Celie over her advice to Harpo on beating Sofia in order to gain power within the household Celie admits that she only told him to do such things because she was jealous of Sofias presence and the way she stands up for herself This is important in Celies life as it is the first time she realises that anyone can gain respect or power by being persistent enough to endure the hardships that life brings but also to take a stand and show that they have their own voice and identityCelie herself is at the end of the novel a heroic figure to both the reader and to the other characters After suffering for so long at the hands of Pa and later Mr Celie finally stands up for herself and secures herself a future by making her voice be heard This act is the climax of the novel and after such a buildup the reader feels a sense of victory both for Celie and for themselves Being a feminist Walkers novel is obviously in the favour of the female gender but the victory over oppression is universal and can be applied to any person who has suffered from either gender Walker manages to show that women can triumph over men if they band together creating her own feminist movement within the novel although she does so in a way which emphasises the importance of relationships and sisterhood rather than the stereotypical antimen views of some womenIn Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit the characters who make the majority of the decisions which affect either the story or Jeanette are her mother and Elsie Norris Jeanettes mother is described at the start of the novel as old testament through and through by the narrator In the old testament God was easily angered and meanspirited This summary of Jeanettes mothers character is one which fits perfectly as her love of Jeanette fluctuates in correlation with Jeanettes fulfilment of her mothers wishesBy being one of the most religious characters Jeanettes mother is also one of the most hypocritical Her actions towards her daughter are harsh and unloving unlike the kind and generous actions expected from a true believer in Jesus teachings Her ability to control Jeanettes actions as a child becomes less and less throughout the novel until the end where Jeanette effectively disowns her The decrease in the power she has over Jeanette is huge but when Jeanette returns home for Christmas her mother acts like nothing has changed By this point in the novel she is no longer the dominating woman we saw at the start she is a more softened and accepting woman who simply reaches for her CB radio whenever she feels distressed Her comfort comes in the form of the World Service her intended use for JeanetteLike Jeanettes mother Elsie is also a devout member of the church and testifies daily Unlike Jeanettes mother however Elsie is outgoing and has a history of travel behind her She represents the imaginative individual who Jeanette will eventually turn intoWhen Jeanettes own mother is being neglectful Elsie is the woman she turns to for comfort and guidance Jeanette learns many things that help her to become the character she is from Elsie that the only way to become the person she wants to be is by opening her mind to new ideasElsie suggests that when Jeanette quits the church she may be better off finding her own way in the world rather than pursuing a religion that she doesnt agree withUnlike Jeanettes mother Elsies power over Jeanette is not dominating or oppressing because Jeanettes lesbianism and rejection of the church are accepted by Elsie when everyone else shuns her The true power that Elsie has is the power to help people and that is what she does for Jeanette throughout When Elsie dies late in the novel Jeanette is deeply saddened at the loss Elsie is her only true friend and even manages to replace her motherJeanette towards the end of the novel is like Celie in the way that she riumphs over hardships but these are nowhere near as severe as in The Color Purple Where Celie is oppressed by men Jeanette is shunned by the church and her mother As a way of coping with her troubles Jeanette writes stories in the same way that Celie uses her letter writing as a coping mechanismBeing an active feminist Winterson has written many pieces about the roles of women in society and their apparent lack of power Winterson highlights this in a piece from The Guardian about Doris Lessing a feminist icon and novelist The main feel of the piece is not about Ms Lessing however it is more about the way women are still struggling for power with their male counterparts relating more to The Color Purple than Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit To conclude I feel that in terms of the portrayal of women and power Alice Walker is the most effective writer of the two Her story not only describes male dominance and the ways in which women can overcome such hardships but also how women can still be civil and forgiving after years of oppression This I feel is a feature that can be felt by every reader as a show of true power and strength whatever their race sexuality gender or even religious preference In Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit the general tone is much lighter than in The Color Purple and to keep the story lighthearted there are much fewer troubles to be overcome resulting in a climax which seems much less significant in terms of women and power than Walkers novel On balance Celies struggle through rape and oppression is more effectively shown than Jeanettes sexuality being frowned upon by her mother and the church Whilst homophobia is a problem that more and more people are affected by every day I feel that sexual dominance and the way women are treated is a problem that has been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years and will continue to touch readers for many more BibliographyThe Guardian Newspapers after the break up that I ended up in rehab Right last months have been absolutely hilarious my life continuous May day Things really aren't the way everybody thinks they are Jonna corrects Well how are they then Going asleep and waking up with medicationIn the beginning of May the tabloids were screaming 'Break up from Ville drove to a vicious circleJONNA WENT TO REHABIn reality burn out and its self medication drove Jonna to rehab Jonna counts that her problems started about half a year ago When Ville was touring with Him Jonna lived alone in the couples' apartment and killed time with working Too muchReal life really wasn't just living as a rock wife Jonna has worked in restaurant business her whole working life and in addition to that has done modeling jobs and TVhosting The shifts at the favorite restaurants of Helsinki could stretch out to 3 am and waking up for the days hosting job was at 5am She started feeling overtired and irritated Even though the fatigue weighted heavy sleep didn't come I was always tense weepy and depressed Was so damn tired but just had to go on I was constantly taking more work although I wasn't feeling goodJonna started medicating her insomnia and bad feelingsWhen I got home in the evenings I drank red wine so I could relax Sleep on the other hand didn't come without tranquilizers or sleeping pills That lead to that I in the morning had to stuff my face full with caffeine tablets because the usual coffee wakening didn't help anymore she tellsOvertiredness stress and pressure of the relationship got deeper and worse It was a full job for Jonna to get out of her house and take care of the agreed shifts but still she couldn't recognize the condition she was getting intoIn that treadwheel I didn't even notice the symptoms of depression I felt violent anxiety and often felt like crying but didn't stop to think what was wrong with meThe final stop came in the middle of March when Jonna withdrew to her homeI was drinking by myself and was physically so dead tired that I couldn't even drag myself to the bathroom or the toilet Everything felt so overwhelming My friends came to visit and found me in the apartment in a confused state of mind I hadn't showered for a week I didn't have strenght for anythingThe friends stayed for the night to support Jonna and contacted her mother The psychiatricmother who works with youngsters who have drug problems understood immediately that now care was needed not scoldingOnly after the others came for help I realized that this is what I needed I felt enormously relieved It felt like a rock had been lifted from me when I was found and I got to say that I needed helpMother guided to rehabAlthough the ultimate reason for Jonnas sickness were depression and overtiredness firstly the drug dependence that had formed in the near months had to be taken care of Jonna was guided to the Aurora hospital in Helsinki but that didn't feel like the right place not in her or the doctors opinion With mothers advice she went to Pellas which is specialized for rehabitation In the connection you talk about drug rehab Though I wasn't doing drugs my medication dependency needed the same kind of treatmentJonna praises Pellas' 11person rehabitation center A homelike atmosphere and an intimate spirit dominated the little unitThe other recoveries were amazing personalities I don't remember laughing so much in ages We were able to laugh at ourselves and our restlessness That helped the recovery On the other hand you realized it isn't a shame to ask for help There are others alikeOnly in the rehab Jonna realized in what a bad shape she had been inShe portrays herself as a performer who tries to please everybody from friend to employerI like to take care of others That way you forget your own troubles A nurse in Pallas reminded me that now I was resting myself There I realized that I don't have to be a superwoman and assiduously assure that I can handle everything Its ok to say that I'm completely dead tiredPallas concentrates on resting discussing eating well and exercising Jonna had lost weight and was in a fragile condition so rehab and insomnia were tough for the body tooI did handiwork when I got an allowance for knitting needles They were forbidden in the house rules but luckily the nurses saw that knitting is an effective way for me to calm downJonna was in Pellas for a month During that time she was only in contact with her mother The rest of the world had to waitWhen the month came to close the thought of leaving was frightening I had gotten used to having support near My other life had been on pause for the whole treatment and I was nervous on what kind of pressures I would encounter in the outer worldAfter the rehab Jonna started therapy At first she had a threshold with talking to a complete stranger When the beginning reservedness was gotten over with the carerelationship became encouraging Therapy concentrates on taking care of the depression and finding out where it all started A therapist doesn't give you advice but helps you think and understandI have learned enormously about myself and realized how things are connected to each other and how our experiences affect us This has been an interesting journey in myself and it probably would suit everybody even if they weren't going through a dramatic stop like thisVille calls dailyThe relationship was ended over the phone VILLE DUMPED JONNA The engaged couples break was in the tabloids in the beginning of March It was told that Ville left Jonna with a text going to sleep and again when he has woken up We talk about this and that How are you eating porridge what are you doing watching a movieJonna reminds that every relationship has problems that are not supposed to be straightened out over the phone You have to talk these things through face to faceEven though it's hard to believe things have a habit of straightening out I have my idea on how things are gonna continue and where I'll in the end settle up in but thats between usFor now Jonna lives with her mother in Hyvink The excouples home in Kaivopuisto is on sale and Ville has gotten a new house from MunkkiniemiJonna admits that a traveling job caused pressure in the relationship but that staying apart also had its charm Both got time for their selves and the moments shared together are even more appreciated Jonna toured around with Him in few occasions for the longest she was with them on the American tour Jonna was also going to go to Australia and Japan but her sickness ruined the plansOnly on the road I realized what a hard job the guys are doing In the morning you wake up to do interviews then you transfer to where the gig is taking place In the night you move to the next target where the routines are repeated Glamour is far from it and everyone who manages tour life deserves respectIt also takes guts for them who stay at homeMaybe even more than for the one who leaves Jonna remarksThe one on the road has its traveling routines and can focus tightly on working but frustration and longing lurks to the one waiting at homeBut I don't blame the job for what happened between us When I got into the relationship Ville was already a successful rockstar and I did know where I got myself intoTo the brake up fuss Jonna takes a humorous standLuckily after it came the forgot herself in her friends house for a month and later moved there entirely A few years later she ended up in New York just as spontaniously a one month holiday expanded to three yearsJonnas and Ville Valos roads crossed for the first time in 2003 when Jonna was visiting Finland She was slowly planning on returning to Finland but when the love flamed the plans speeded upJonna says she wasn't the least bit interested in standing in publicity next to Ville and didn't let it change her life She had gotten her own share of publicity with her jobs on MoonTV SubTV and now on MTV To gossiping Jonna has an uncaring attitudeHalf acquitances call and tell things on our behalf So what That doesn't feel like anything There are always lurkers and I don't view them as my friends We had a habit of continues regularly and Jonna has slowly returned to restaurant jobs When MTVs Headbangers ball returns from the summer brake Jonna will continue to host itRight after the rehab Jonna felt like the normal life wouldn't work She wasn't able to sleep and couldn't find a good rhythm The next phase was what doesn't kill pisses you off With the support of others I could carry on even if it was strength taking Then came the best phase of recovery What doesn't piss you off anymore strengthens I could look back and notice that jes I went through quite a mess but came through as a much stronger human I understand myself others and the society betterJonna used to think that exhaustion was a sign of weakness Close relations and doctors have praised her to be brave she did confess she needed help and even told the public about her hellGoing to rehab was the best opinion for me at that moment I wasn't the first definitely not the last and asking for help is nothing to be ashamed ofJonna is thankful for the support her friends gave her She hadn't realized how many people she had who cared about herThough then there are those who think I was in rehab because I was crazyJonna admits that she couldn't have survived without the help of her mother Mom knew that instead of condemnation understanding was needed It would have been easy to turn your back on your drunkard and take a condemnated attitudeMy mother was an absolutely fabulous help and the tough experience has brought us together Lets see when I bear to leave from her There we lay next to my mom my little sister and I Right now it's the safest place on earth
