alt="SCARYSTORYTHETROUBLEPART2.jpg" />
The Trouble part 2 - SCARYSTORYTHETROUBLEPART2.jpg

THE TROUBLE PART 2 noisy ghost that is blamed when things moved around on their own No one has proved that poltergeists exist But people everywhere had told stories about them for hundreds of years And what they have told was not too different from what was happening to the Lombardos Detective Briggs did not of course believe in poltergeists He had begun to believe that Tom Lombardo might be to blame Whenever something happened Tom was usually in the room or nearby When he accused Tom of causing the trouble the boy denied it I don't know what's going on he said All I know is that it scares me People said that Detective Briggs was a tough cop who would turn in his mother if she did something wrong But he believed Tom Only now he didn't know what to think Tuesday February 25 A newspaper reporter came to the house to interview the family Afterward he sat in the living room by himself hoping that something would happen that he could describe in his story Tom's room was just across the hall from where the reporter sat The boy had gone to bed but he had left his door open Suddenly a globe of the world flew out of the darkened room and smashed into a wall The reporter dashed into the bedroom and turned on the light Tom was sitting in bed blinking as if he had just been awakened from a sound sleep What was that he asked Wednesday February 26 In the morning a small plastic statue of the Virgin Mary rose up from a dresser in Mr and Mrs Lombardo's bedroom and flew into a mirror That night while Tom was doing his homework a ten pound record player took off from a table flew fifteen feet then crashed to the floor Friday February 28 Two scientists arrived from Duke University in North Carolina They were Parapsychologists who studied experiences like those the Lombardos were having They spent several days talking to the family and examining the house trying to understand what was going on and what was causing it One night a bottle of bleach popped its top but that was all that happened during their visit They did not tell the Lombardos about a theory they had that a poltergeist actually might be involved in such cases According to this idea poltergeists were not ghosts They were normal teenagers They had become so troubled by a problem that their emotions built up into a kind of vibration Since it was taken place in their unconscious minds they didn't even know it was happening But the vibration somehow left their bodies and moved whatever it struck It happened again and again until the problem had been solved Scientists had given this strange power a name They called it psychokinesis the ability to move objects with mental power or mind over matter No one knew if this really could happen or how to prove it Yet most reports of poltergeists did involve families with teenage children and there were two teenagers in the Lombardo family Monday March 3 The parapsychologists said that they would prepare a report on what they had learned The day after they left the trouble returned with a vengeance Tuesday March 4 In the afternoon a bowl of flowers flew off the diningroom table and smashed into a cupboard Then a bottle of bleach jumped out of a cardboard box and popped its top Then a bookcase filled with encyclopedias fell over and wedged itself between a radiator and a wall Then a flashlight bulb on a table rose up and hit a wall twelve feet away Finally four knocks were heard coming from the kitchen when nobody was in that room Wednesday March 5 While Mrs Lombardo was making breakfast she heard a loud crash in the living room The coffee table had turned over by itself But that was the end of it After a month of chaos everything returned to normal In August the two parapsychologists gave their report They decided that the Lombardos had not made up the story Nor had they imagined it Their trouble had been real But what had caused it They said that no pranks or tricks were involved nor was any magic As the police had done they also ruled out vibrations from underground water and other physical causes The only explanation they could not rule out was the possibility that a teenage poltergeist had been at work moving objects with mental power They did not have enough evidence to prove it but it was the only answer they had If it was a poltergeist they thought it was Tom If they were right if a normal boy like Tom had become a poltergeist this also might happen to other teenagers It might even happen to you

THE TROUBLE PART 2 noisy ghost that is blamed when things moved around on their own No one has proved that poltergeists exist But people everywhere had told stories about them for hundreds of years And what they have told was not too different from what was happening to the Lombardos Detective Briggs did not of course believe in poltergeists He had begun to believe that Tom Lombardo might be to blame Whenever something happened Tom was usually in the room or nearby When he accused Tom of causing the trouble the boy denied it I don't know what's going on he said All I know is that it scares me People said that Detective Briggs was a tough cop who would turn in his mother if she did something wrong But he believed Tom Only now he didn't know what to think Tuesday February 25 A newspaper reporter came to the house to interview the family Afterward he sat in the living room by himself hoping that something would happen that he could describe in his story Tom's room was just across the hall from where the reporter sat The boy had gone to bed but he had left his door open Suddenly a globe of the world flew out of the darkened room and smashed into a wall The reporter dashed into the bedroom and turned on the light Tom was sitting in bed blinking as if he had just been awakened from a sound sleep What was that he asked Wednesday February 26 In the morning a small plastic statue of the Virgin Mary rose up from a dresser in Mr and Mrs Lombardo's bedroom and flew into a mirror That night while Tom was doing his homework a ten pound record player took off from a table flew fifteen feet then crashed to the floor Friday February 28 Two scientists arrived from Duke University in North Carolina They were Parapsychologists who studied experiences like those the Lombardos were having They spent several days talking to the family and examining the house trying to understand what was going on and what was causing it One night a bottle of bleach popped its top but that was all that happened during their visit They did not tell the Lombardos about a theory they had that a poltergeist actually might be involved in such cases According to this idea poltergeists were not ghosts They were normal teenagers They had become so troubled by a problem that their emotions built up into a kind of vibration Since it was taken place in their unconscious minds they didn't even know it was happening But the vibration somehow left their bodies and moved whatever it struck It happened again and again until the problem had been solved Scientists had given this strange power a name They called it psychokinesis the ability to move objects with mental power or mind over matter No one knew if this really could happen or how to prove it Yet most reports of poltergeists did involve families with teenage children and there were two teenagers in the Lombardo family Monday March 3 The parapsychologists said that they would prepare a report on what they had learned The day after they left the trouble returned with a vengeance Tuesday March 4 In the afternoon a bowl of flowers flew off the diningroom table and smashed into a cupboard Then a bottle of bleach jumped out of a cardboard box and popped its top Then a bookcase filled with encyclopedias fell over and wedged itself between a radiator and a wall Then a flashlight bulb on a table rose up and hit a wall twelve feet away Finally four knocks were heard coming from the kitchen when nobody was in that room Wednesday March 5 While Mrs Lombardo was making breakfast she heard a loud crash in the living room The coffee table had turned over by itself But that was the end of it After a month of chaos everything returned to normal In August the two parapsychologists gave their report They decided that the Lombardos had not made up the story Nor had they imagined it Their trouble had been real But what had caused it They said that no pranks or tricks were involved nor was any magic As the police had done they also ruled out vibrations from underground water and other physical causes The only explanation they could not rule out was the possibility that a teenage poltergeist had been at work moving objects with mental power They did not have enough evidence to prove it but it was the only answer they had If it was a poltergeist they thought it was Tom If they were right if a normal boy like Tom had become a poltergeist this also might happen to other teenagers It might even happen to you

noadults.jpg

Unnecessary hypervigilance in parks no unaccompanied adultsfrom William M Briggs Statistician by BriggsI think that sign came from England Here in the States we have the similar sign but in picture forma lone adult with a circle around him and a slash through his chest or something similar Its meaning is clear Do not enter this park unless you have a child with youAre the authorities who placed these signs worried that adults cannot properly operate playground equipment without the expert help of a preteen Sort of like how many parents rely on their kids to reboot their computers for themNo obviously not The signs are put there because of the sincere belief that any unaccompanied adult who is in the area of children might be a child molesterYes A child molesterAndheres where I throw in the twistthe authorities are right They have made a statement that is logically true Unaccompanied adults might be child molestersThey also might be aliens from Mars disguised as humans They might be anything they even might not be child molestersThe only reason to ban unaccompanied adults is if you have estimated the probability that these folks are evil is high Is it Are the authorities banning the right peopleFor years I have figured that most child abuse occurs at the hands of people known to the children That is parents babysitters aunts and uncles trusted family friends and so forth Just the sort of people who will legitimately accompany the children to the playgrounds But I was too lazy to look up the statistics nor did I know where to start Thankfully Mary Jackson over at PajamasMediacom did it for meJackson found the government report Child Maltreatment which investigates the matter in all its depressing detail Chapter 5 contains the statistics summed up in this pictureMuch as I hate pie charts we can at least read this one It says what we might have figured Parents account for 80 of abuse cases Other trusted adults make up another 13 or so The key number is that only 4 of cases are Other those unaccompanied adults lurking in parks Incidentally 578 percent of the perpetrators were women which probably is not the ratio you expectedIf you want to be sarcastic and I do you can say the authorities have done the exact opposite of what they should do if their sole interest was in protecting the kids Since the vast majority of kids who will be abused will be so abused by the very people bringing them into the park the authorities should not allow any person known to the child to enter the playground and they instead should grab strangers off the street to make sure they dont break their neck on the monkey bars if they still have those dangerous lifethreatening devices and if they are still called by that vaguely politically incorrect nameOf course protecting kids was not the sole interest the authorities had in mind when they created their rule Mollifying paranoid parents also figured highly The fact that some people just like to be around kidseven stating that sounds creepy to our modern earsis nothing next to the fear of the worst that can happenDont get me wrong My idea of appropriate punishment for people who do abuse kids runs along medieval lines at the very least in my scheme convicted molesters would never again see the light of dayBut wrong or misapplied protection rules give a false sense of security You figure to yourself Well Ive banned this or that Now I dont have to worry If youre banning the wrong thing then you are doing double the harm Youre missing the real threat and letting your guard down at the same time For example to get through the gate of airport security requires at least two people checking to see if you have a ticket in your name This is silly because any hijacker need merely buy a ticketjust as those on 911 did Checking a ticket buys you nothing but false security and it unnecessarily increases costs and creates delaysIts the case here too If a stranger is intent on say abducting a child a sign banning him from doing so is not going to stop him But since that sign is there the adults watching the kids might be a little less careful since they have figured no evil person will bypass the sacrosanct placard The only thing the warning will do is stop kindly old ladies from sitting peacefully enjoying the sounds of kids at playCaveats in the government report they do not break down the relationship of the child by type of abuse The largest form of abuse 61 is neglect just under 8 is sexual abuse In 2005 there were about 67000 cases of sexual abuse According to the US Census about 804 million people are 19 or younger 602 million 14 or younger This makes the rate of sexual abuse around 8 kids under 20 in every 10000 or about 008 or about 1 kids under 15 in every 1000 which is 01 Thankfully a very small number If the relationship breakdowns in Chapter 5 also hold for sexual abuse then sexual abuse by strangers occurred at a rate around 3 kids under 20 out of every 100000 or 0003 or 4 kids under 15 out of every 100000 or 00004 In other words the signs and laws banning unaccompanied adults at best are doing very very little

/>
Jimi Hendrix quotHendrix in the Westquot quotWar Heroesquot Barclay Records Italian Import Vinyl LP - PROG-LpHendrixWarHeros.jpg

In his brief fouryear reign as a superstar Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astralquality feedback and roaring distortion His frequent hurricane blasts of noise and dazzling showmanship he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth and set his guitar on fire has sometimes obscured his considerable gifts as a songwriter singer and master of a gamut of blues RB and rock stylesWhen Hendrix became an international superstar in 1967 it seemed as if he'd dropped out of a Martian spaceship but in fact he'd served his apprenticeship the long mundane way in numerous RB acts on the chitlin circuit During the early and mid'60s he worked with such RBsoul greats as Little Richard the Isley Brothers and King Curtis as a backup guitarist Occasionally he recorded as a session man the Isley Brothers' 1964 single Testify is the only one of these early tracks that offers even a glimpse of his future genius But the stars didn't appreciate his showstealing showmanship and Hendrix was straightjacketed by sideman roles that didn't allow him to develop as a soloist The logical step was for Hendrix to go out on his own which he did in New York in the mid'60s playing with various musicians in local clubs and joining white bluesrock singer John Hammond Jr's band for a whileIt was in a New York club that Hendrix was spotted by Animals bassist Chas Chandler The first lineup of the Animals was about to split and Chandler looking to move into management convinced Hendrix to move to London and record as a solo act in England There a group was built around Jimi also featuring Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass that was dubbed the Jimi Hendrix Experience The trio became stars with astonishing speed in the UK where Hey Joe Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary all made the Top Ten in the first half of 1967 These tracks were also featured on their debut album Are You Experienced a psychedelic meisterwerk that became a huge hit in the US after Hendrix created a sensation at the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967Are You Experienced was an astonishing debut particularly from a young RB veteran who had rarely sung and apparently never written his own material before the Experience formed What caught most people's attention at first was his virtuosic guitar playing which employed an arsenal of devices including wahwah pedals buzzing feedback solos crunching distorted riffs and lightning liquid runs up and down the scales But Hendrix was also a firstrate songwriter melding cosmic imagery with some surprisingly popsavvy hooks and tender sentiments He was also an excellent blues interpreter and passionate engaging singer although his gruff throaty vocal pipes were not nearly as great assets as his instrumental skills Are You Experienced was psychedelia at its most eclectic synthesizing mod pop soul RB Dylan and the electric guitar innovations of British pioneers like Jeff Beck Pete Townshend and Eric ClaptonAmazingly Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime Axis Bold as Love and the doubleLP Electric Ladyland were more diffuse and experimental than Are You Experienced On Electric Ladyland in particular Hendrix pioneered the use of the studio itself as a recording instrument manipulating electronics and devising overdub techniques with the help of engineer Eddie Kramer in particular to plot uncharted sonic territory Not that these albums were perfect as impressive as they were the instrumental breaks could meander and Hendrix's songwriting was occasionally halfbaked never matching the consistency of Are You Experienced although he exercised greater creative control over the later albumsThe final two years of Hendrix's life were turbulent ones musically financially and personally He was embroiled in enough complicated management and record company disputes some dating from illadvised contracts he'd signed before the Experience formed to keep the lawyers busy for years He disbanded the Experience in 1969 forming the Band of Gypsies with drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox to pursue funkier directions He closed Woodstock with a sprawling shaky set redeemed by his famous machinegun interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner The rhythm section of Mitchell and Redding were underrated keys to Jimi's best work and the Band of Gypsies ultimately couldn't measure up to the same standard although Hendrix did record an erratic live album with them In early 1970 the Experience reformed again and disbanded again shortly afterward At the same time Hendrix felt torn in many directions by various fellow musicians recordcompany expectations and management pressures all of whom had their own ideas of what Hendrix should be doing Coming up on two years after Electric Ladyland a new studio album had yet to appear although Hendrix was recording constantly during the periodWhile outside parties did contribute to bogging down Hendrix's studio work it also seems likely that Jimi himself was partly responsible for the stalemate unable to form a permanent lineup of musicians unable to decide what musical direction to pursue unable to bring himself to complete another album despite jamming endlessly A few months into 1970 Mitchell Hendrix's most valuable musical collaborator came back into the fold replacing Miles in the drum chair although Cox stayed in place It was this trio that toured the world during Hendrix's final monthsIt's extremely difficult to separate the facts of Hendrix's life from rumors and speculation Everyone who knew him well or claimed to know him well has different versions of his state of mind in 1970 Critics have variously mused that he was going to go into jazz that he was going to get deeper into the blues that he was going to continue doing what he was doing or that he was too confused to know what he was doing at all The same confusion holds true for his death contradictory versions of his final days have been given by his closest acquaintances of the time He'd been working intermittently on a new album tentatively titled First Ray of the New Rising Sun when he died in London on September 18 1970 from drugrelated complicationsHendrix recorded a massive amount of unreleased studio material during his lifetime Much of this as well as entire live concerts was issued posthumously several of the live concerts were excellent but the studio tapes have been the focus of enormous controversy for over 20 years These initially came out in haphazard drabs and drubs the first The Cry of Love was easily the most outstanding of the lot In the mid'70s producer Alan Douglas took control of these projects posthumously overdubbing many of Hendrix's tapes with additional parts by studio musicians In the eyes of many Hendrix fans this was sacrilege destroying the integrity of the work of a musician known to exercise meticulous care over the final production of his studio recordings Even as late as 1995 Douglas was having exKnack drummer Bruce Gary record new parts for the typically misbegotten compilation Voodoo Soup After a lengthy legal dispute the rights to Hendrix's estate including all of his recordings returned to Al Hendrix the
In his brief fouryear reign as a superstar Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astralquality feedback and roaring distortion His frequent hurricane blasts of noise and dazzling showmanship he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth and set his guitar on fire has sometimes obscured his considerable gifts as a songwriter singer and master of a gamut of blues RB and rock stylesWhen Hendrix became an international superstar in 1967 it seemed as if he'd dropped out of a Martian spaceship but in fact he'd served his apprenticeship the long mundane way in numerous RB acts on the chitlin circuit During the early and mid'60s he worked with such RBsoul greats as Little Richard the Isley Brothers and King Curtis as a backup guitarist Occasionally he recorded as a session man the Isley Brothers' 1964 single Testify is the only one of these early tracks that offers even a glimpse of his future genius But the stars didn't appreciate his showstealing showmanship and Hendrix was straightjacketed by sideman roles that didn't allow him to develop as a soloist The logical step was for Hendrix to go out on his own which he did in New York in the mid'60s playing with various musicians in local clubs and joining white bluesrock singer John Hammond Jr's band for a whileIt was in a New York club that Hendrix was spotted by Animals bassist Chas Chandler The first lineup of the Animals was about to split and Chandler looking to move into management convinced Hendrix to move to London and record as a solo act in England There a group was built around Jimi also featuring Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass that was dubbed the Jimi Hendrix Experience The trio became stars with astonishing speed in the UK where Hey Joe Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary all made the Top Ten in the first half of 1967 These tracks were also featured on their debut album Are You Experienced a psychedelic meisterwerk that became a huge hit in the US after Hendrix created a sensation at the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967Are You Experienced was an astonishing debut particularly from a young RB veteran who had rarely sung and apparently never written his own material before the Experience formed What caught most people's attention at first was his virtuosic guitar playing which employed an arsenal of devices including wahwah pedals buzzing feedback solos crunching distorted riffs and lightning liquid runs up and down the scales But Hendrix was also a firstrate songwriter melding cosmic imagery with some surprisingly popsavvy hooks and tender sentiments He was also an excellent blues interpreter and passionate engaging singer although his gruff throaty vocal pipes were not nearly as great assets as his instrumental skills Are You Experienced was psychedelia at its most eclectic synthesizing mod pop soul RB Dylan and the electric guitar innovations of British pioneers like Jeff Beck Pete Townshend and Eric ClaptonAmazingly Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime Axis Bold as Love and the doubleLP Electric Ladyland were more diffuse and experimental than Are You Experienced On Electric Ladyland in particular Hendrix pioneered the use of the studio itself as a recording instrument manipulating electronics and devising overdub techniques with the help of engineer Eddie Kramer in particular to plot uncharted sonic territory Not that these albums were perfect as impressive as they were the instrumental breaks could meander and Hendrix's songwriting was occasionally halfbaked never matching the consistency of Are You Experienced although he exercised greater creative control over the later albumsThe final two years of Hendrix's life were turbulent ones musically financially and personally He was embroiled in enough complicated management and record company disputes some dating from illadvised contracts he'd signed before the Experience formed to keep the lawyers busy for years He disbanded the Experience in 1969 forming the Band of Gypsies with drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox to pursue funkier directions He closed Woodstock with a sprawling shaky set redeemed by his famous machinegun interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner The rhythm section of Mitchell and Redding were underrated keys to Jimi's best work and the Band of Gypsies ultimately couldn't measure up to the same standard although Hendrix did record an erratic live album with them In early 1970 the Experience reformed again and disbanded again shortly afterward At the same time Hendrix felt torn in many directions by various fellow musicians recordcompany with the breakup of Julia Roberts and Benjamin BrattSpeaking about the 2003 start to the Iraq war You can't beat your enemy anymore through wars instead you create an entire generation of people revengeseeking These days it only matters who's in charge Right now that's us for a while at least Our opponents are going to resort to car bombs and suicide attacks because they have no other way to win I believe Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld thinks this is a war that can be won but there is no such thing anymore We can't beat anyone anymoreIt's not about an opening weekend It's about a career building a set of films you're proud of PeriodNinety percent of films are pretty mediocre but they have a builtin audience and open on 3000 screensConfessions of a Dangerous Mind 2002 bombed But I can take it Most of the films I've done haven't done particularly well I'm surprised I'm continuing to workDirecting is really exciting In the end it's more fun to be the painter than the paintI don't believe in happy endings but I do believe in happy travels because ultimatelyyou die at a very young age or you live long enough to watch your friends die It's a mean thing lifeWe've been trying to push our involvement within the studio system sort of push the things that we've learned from foreign and independent films through the '80s and push those things back into the studio system Like Out of Sight 1998 isn't your standard studio film by any means Three Kings 1999 wasn't the'standard Warner Bros kind of filmdirectors are the captains of the ship and it's your job as the lead actor to make sure that the rest of the cast understand that by doing whatever he saysSee the first thing about actors is you're just trying to get a job and you audition and audition and you finally get them And you still consider yourself an auditioning actor I auditioned for One Fine Day 1996 I wasn't offered that So you're still in that 'Hey I'm just trying to get a job' thing Then you get to the point where if you decide to do it then they'll make the film That's a different kind of responsibility and it usually takes a couple of films to catch up And then you have to actually pay attention to the kind of films that you're makingYou got to think of things at their worst not at their best And Out of Sight 1998 was the first time where I had a say and it was the first good screenplay that I'd read where I just went 'That's it'And even though it didn't do really well box officewisewe sort of tanked againit was a really good film And I realized from that point on that it was strictly screenplay first And then it becomes easier because once you eliminate the idea of doing a vehicle believe me there's nobody who's encouraging us to make these films not agents not we're not getting paid for these things and it's not like we're going to make a mintOn making Ocean's Eleven 2001 It was the easiest shoot ever for any actor and we all knew it when we were doing it We were like it's never going to be better than this He director Steven Soderbergh was in hell because it was a really complicated film to put together We were like we're in Las Vegas we go to work at one in the afternoon and we gotta be done by six at night Six hours of work Steven was editing all nightI'm a hybrid I succeed in both worlds I hope that selling out on Ocean's Eleven 2001 is not such a bad deal The tradeoff is I get to go make something uncommercial that will probably lose moneySteven Soderberg and I have a great relationship inside the studio system We make the kinds of films we want and commercial films at the same time Steven and I have lost a lot of money We are way in the hole But this is not a day job I've got some cash I have a nice house in Italy I do OKIt's true information is harder to get these days When I was growing up there were three networks three news shows delivering the same information You took that information into your home and you formed your own opinions Now we have 130 channels You go to the channel that plays to your belief pattern We start with different sets of facts it's more polarizingI'm not a snob I like entertaining films as well But when you do a film like this or like Three Kings 1999films that get you in a bit of troubleit's fun to open up a debate On Good Night and Good Luck 2005I think if you listen to the piece I certainly did not talk about wanting to kill myself I was talking about the idea of living for years in that kind of pain Please don't use my words out of context Responding to media reports that he had contemplated suicide following surgeryAn acting career usually has about a shelf life of ten years before people get sick of seeing you It's a good thing to have a job to fall back on and I really do enjoy directingI doubt anybody gets taken seriously for very long I'll be on some reality show in about six years going Hey I had a great year in 2006People thought I was Tom and Nicole's bodyguard They'd come up and go Is it okay if I go up and ask for an autograph' It was good I'd charge 'em three bucks a person Yeah you gotta make some money off of thatI'm the flavor of the monthRun for office No I've slept with too many women I've done too many drugs and I've been to too many partiesI know what my limitations are as an actor but my strength is putting myself into a wellwritten part When I get in trouble is when I have to fix it or when I have to carry it on personalityHere is my theory in debunking photographs in magazines You know the paparazzi photographs I want to spend every single night for three months going out with a different famous actress You know Halle Berry one night Salma Hayek the next and then walk on the beach holding hands with Leonardo DiCaprio People would still buy the magazines they'd still buy the pictures but departmentI don't like to share my personal life it wouldn't be personal if I shared itI was too busy breaking up Tom and Nicole's marriage quip on the fact he had nothing to do with the breakup of Julia Roberts and Benjamin BrattSpeaking about the 2003 start to the Iraq war You can't beat your enemy anymore through wars instead you create an entire generation of people revengeseeking These days it only matters who's in charge Right now that's us for a while at least Our opponents are going to resort to car bombs and suicide attacks because they have no other way to win I believe Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld thinks this is a war that can be won but there is no such thing anymore We can't beat anyone anymoreIt's not about an opening weekend It's about a career building a set of films you're proud of PeriodNinety percent of films are pretty mediocre but they have a builtin audience and open on 3000 screensConfessions of a Dangerous Mind 2002 bombed But I can take it Most of the films I've done haven't done particularly well I'm surprised I'm continuing to workDirecting is really exciting In the end it's more fun to be the painter than the paintI don't believe in happy endings but I do believe in happy travels because ultimatelyyou die at a very young age or you live long enough to watch your friends die It's a mean thing lifeWe've been trying to push our involvement within the studio system sort of push the things that we've learned from foreign and independent films through the '80s and push those things back into the studio system Like Out of Sight 1998 isn't your standard studio film by any means Three Kings 1999 wasn't the'standard Warner Bros kind of filmdirectors are the captains of the ship and it's your job as the lead actor to make sure that the rest of the cast understand that by doing whatever he saysSee the first thing about actors is you're just trying to get a job and you audition and audition and you finally get them And you still consider yourself an auditioning actor I auditioned for One Fine Day 1996 I wasn't offered that So you're still in that 'Hey I'm just trying to get a job' thing Then you get to the point where if you decide to do it then they'll make the film That's a different kind of responsibility and it usually takes a couple of films to catch up And then you have to actually pay attention to the kind of films that you're makingYou got to think of things at their worst not at their best And Out of Sight 1998 was the first time where I had a say and it was the first good screenplay that I'd read where I just went 'That's it'And even though it didn't do really well box officewisewe sort of tanked againit was a really good film And I realized from that point on that it was strictly screenplay first And then it becomes easier because once you eliminate the idea of doing a vehicle believe me there's nobody who's encouraging us to make these films not agents not we're not getting paid for these things and it's not like we're going to make a mintOn making Ocean's Eleven 2001 It was the easiest shoot ever for any actor and we all knew it when we were doing it We were like it's never going to be better than this He director Steven Soderbergh was in hell because it was a really complicated film to put together We were like we're in Las Vegas we go to work at one in the afternoon and we gotta be done by six at night Six hours of work Steven was editing all nightI'm a hybrid I succeed in both worlds I hope that selling out on Ocean's Eleven 2001 is not such a bad deal The tradeoff is I get to go make something uncommercial that will probably lose moneySteven Soderberg and I have a great relationship inside the studio system We make the kinds of films we want and commercial films at the same time Steven and I have lost a lot of money We are way in the hole But this is not a day job I've got some cash I have a nice house in Italy I do OKIt's true information is harder to get these days When I was growing up there were three networks three news shows delivering the same information You took that information into your home and you formed your own opinions Now we have 130 channels You go to the channel that plays to your belief pattern We start with different sets of facts it's more polarizingI'm not a snob I like entertaining films as well But when you do a film like this or like Three Kings 1999films that get you in a bit of troubleit's fun to open up a debate On Good Night and Good Luck 2005I think if you listen to the piece I certainly did not talk about wanting to kill myself I was talking about the idea of living for years in that kind of pain Please don't use my words out of context Responding to media reports that he had contemplated suicide following surgeryAn acting career usually has about a shelf life of ten years before people get sick of seeing you It's a good thing to have a job to fall back on and I really do enjoy directingI doubt anybody gets taken seriously for very long I'll be on some reality show in about six years going Hey I had a great year in 2006People thought I was Tom and Nicole's bodyguard They'd come up and go Is it okay if I go up and ask for an autograph' It was good I'd charge 'em three bucks a person Yeah you gotta make some money off of thatI'm the flavor of the monthRun for office No I've slept with too many women I've done too many drugs and I've been to too many partiesI know what my limitations are as an actor but my strength is putting myself into a wellwritten part When I get in trouble is when I have to fix it or when I have to carry it on personalityHere is my theory in debunking photographs in magazines You know the paparazzi photographs I want to spend every single night for three months going out with a different famous actress You know Halle Berry one night Salma Hayek the next and then walk on the beach holding hands with Leonardo DiCaprio People would still buy the magazines they'd still buy the pictures but they would always go 'I don't know if these guys are putting us on or not'You never really learn much from hearing yourself talkI don't live at full tilt the way I used to You begin to hate waking up with the kind of hangover you get from going on huge benders with your buddies Also since my neck surgeries I've been forced to take things easier and not beat up my body the way I used to I'm more cautiousThe idea that every time you do a film you're supposed to be tortured confuses me I mean guys who say 'Oh it's really tough my character is
