Some of the photos are of the Tulum Ruins we visited right down the beach from our resort There are also a lot of photos of the Chichnitze ruins Ik Kil was a beautiful cenote we visited that was so awesome It is hard to understand the size of it from the photos until you see one with people in it It was huge The tree roots hanging down into the water were so interesting Water was cascading down in different places as well I did not get in the water but I was told it was around 72 degrees The foliage around this place was awesome It was a little area of paradise in the middle of the jungle n n n nWe also visited the little town of Pueblo Tulum and walked up and down the main strip that was lined with several local vendors selling homemade goods and homegrown fruits and vegetables yes I took photos of the butcher shop that was open air but I did not get the dog in the pic Also of the internet cafes that I thought were very odd and a few other interesting buildings The people were nice and smiled at us but most did not speak English there Looking down the streets beyond the commerce blocks were very dirty and deteriorated It was very sad when people would smile at you and have so few teeth We passed a public help building as well that had people lined up down the sidewalk I did not take a picture of them as I felt it would be rude n n n nWe rode in a taxi for an hour to get to Playa del Carmen and walked the 12 block 5th Avenue shoppingrestaurant district It was interesting A lot of the same items were for sale in many shops and street people trying anything to get you in to buy their stuff They had a lot of these pharmacies where you could buy anything you wanted without a prescription which was so weird We also had about 10 people come up to us asking if we wanted to buy drugs (the illegal kind) It was very disturbing I was definitely ready to leave this area after 3 hours even though you could see the beach and the ferry to Cozumel was a couple of blocks over It was annoying people yelling at you nonstop trying to sell you crap Lady lady come see my stuff n n n nWe went through a lot of little villages that were very run down and depressing We spent a couple of hours in a taxi and talking with the driver about his life was one of the most interesting conversations Just to learn about how his life really is gives me such a different perspective on things His name was Humberto (I think) married 16 years 2 boys 1 girl taught English by a friend just by repeating phrases and conversation His friend told him he would have better work opportunities if he learned English He used to be the bellboy at the resort we were staying at but then he had the chance to take the taxi driver test Now he works 5AM to 10PM 6 days a week He does not have a car but he said if he works for the taxi company for 5 or 6 years he will have a chance to get a car to take home so his boys can also drive the taxi and earn money for the family So he was very excited about that opportunity He was very proud of his daughter for placing third in all of the Yucatan Peninsula area in an academic competition He was a very sweet man and was very happy go lucky He even had some homemade cds with American music on them he played while we were in the car I wish I had gotten his address I would have mailed him some new ones with updated music ( I still might try to get his address I still remember his cab number n n n nAfter seeing the conditions in Mexico behind all of the fancy resorts and tourist areas I understand why so many Mexicans want to migrate to the US They just want better opportunities for their families I do not blame them at all n n n nAll in all it was a good trip even though I got sick I didnt drink the water I am not sure what got me but I am guessing some food that was not prepared properly at the natural water park Xel Ha or maybe I inhaled some of the water when we were snorkeling We had a good time and we both learned a lot It is a beautiful place but definitely has its share of social issues caring for the people that live there Hopefully one day it can improve n n n nWell I know I went on for a while I hope you enjoy the pics and the stories

6142009 - We'd planned to go out to eat on Saturday night and bring the cake and ice cream to the little Mexican Restaurant near our apartment but it seems that plan changed and we ended up celebrating the day with Sarah on an outing (even though it was too hot for the zoo) eating under a shade tree by the fountain smelling the sweet magnolias in bloom at George Hermann Memorial Park We got a pretty reasonable lunch that we had ample left-overs to bring home to James at the hospital cafeteria for around 1000 and tried to enjoy the day just sight-seeing in-doors and out in the shade when it wasn't too hot We had the cake which James picked up on Saturday the following Sunday afternoon at Ava's apartment They have their birthdays one day apart and we just decided not to feel pressed or to press anyone to spend a lot of money because we would have to get things for Sarah later and I just didn't think that spur-of-the-moment purchases were a good thing She needed socks but I didn't want anyone to be obligated The point of the day was to have a good time and to enjoy each other's company to relax and to have cake and ice cream to sit and talk and to rest They also go the opportunity to watch how much Sarah has grown and how she tried to take the chair and push it to walk and how she was trying to talk and to push herself up on her hands to stand erect She's trying very hard and that is worth it for her birthday We can always get her toys and clothes and things that she needs as she is growing Sarah has her princess cup that I got her when we were shopping for Mimah's present I got her the cup and a pack of washable markers to color with She likes markers and the cup may teach her to drink better although she will still need the tops to have her breakfast drink and when we are moving and traveling to make things spill-proof She has been doing very well the following day and showing interest in wanting to drink from the glass LLO'C

6142009 - We'd planned to go out to eat on Saturday night and bring the cake and ice cream to the little Mexican Restaurant near our apartment but it seems that plan changed and we ended up celebrating the day with Sarah on an outing (even though it was too hot for the zoo) eating under a shade tree by the fountain smelling the sweet magnolias in bloom at George Hermann Memorial Park We got a pretty reasonable lunch that we had ample left-overs to bring home to James at the hospital cafeteria for around 1000 and tried to enjoy the day just sight-seeing in-doors and out in the shade when it wasn't too hot We had the cake which James picked up on Saturday the following Sunday afternoon at Ava's apartment They have their birthdays one day apart and we just decided not to feel pressed or to press anyone to spend a lot of money because we would have to get things for Sarah later and I just didn't think that spur-of-the-moment purchases were a good thing She needed socks but I didn't want anyone to be obligated The point of the day was to have a good time and to enjoy each other's company to relax and to have cake and ice cream to sit and talk and to rest They also go the opportunity to watch how much Sarah has grown and how she tried to take the chair and push it to walk and how she was trying to talk and to push herself up on her hands to stand erect She's trying very hard and that is worth it for her birthday We can always get her toys and clothes and things that she needs as she is growing I still brought Sarah's red cup with the lid and about 4 cans of Dr Pepper I opened one and left it in the fridge because we had to leave in a hurry but Sarah and I would have something to drink in case there was no soda there Sarah tried to get into Paul's beer a couple of times but we stopped her This is Sarah commandeering Ava's chair when she got up I had to move the camera fast here because I almost caught Ava's backside LLO'C

Friends and neighbors Debbie Marullo (left) and Lakshmi McRae made the trek down from Dickinson to show support for the Empty Bowl by filling up their one-of-a-kind hand-made bowls Around 15 people andor shops donated soups for the tasting Some of the soup varieties included cauliflower soup French onion Jamaican Pepper Pot and mushroom leek Lakshmi whose UTMB employer also raises money for Jesse Tree had been to the Empty Bowl and wanted to return again this year That's when she decided to invite her neighbor to attend as well (Photo commentary by Susan Fox volunteer)

6142009 - We'd planned to go out to eat on Saturday night and bring the cake and ice cream to the little Mexican Restaurant near our apartment but it seems that plan changed and we ended up celebrating the day with Sarah on an outing (even though it was too hot for the zoo) eating under a shade tree by the fountain smelling the sweet magnolias in bloom at George Hermann Memorial Park We got a pretty reasonable lunch that we had ample left-overs to bring home to James at the hospital cafeteria for around 1000 and tried to enjoy the day just sight-seeing in-doors and out in the shade when it wasn't too hot We had the cake which James picked up on Saturday the following Sunday afternoon at Ava's apartment They have their birthdays one day apart and we just decided not to feel pressed or to press anyone to spend a lot of money because we would have to get things for Sarah later and I just didn't think that spur-of-the-moment purchases were a good thing She needed socks but I didn't want anyone to be obligated The point of the day was to have a good time and to enjoy each other's company to relax and to have cake and ice cream to sit and talk and to rest They also go the opportunity to watch how much Sarah has grown and how she tried to take the chair and push it to walk and how she was trying to talk and to push herself up on her hands to stand erect She's trying very hard and that is worth it for her birthday We can always get her toys and clothes and things that she needs as she is growing Sarah has her princesses cup that she's been trying to drink out of the next day and doing pretty well without a top on a glass This was a decent teaching gift too I may try to find a few to send to school for her LLO'C
