Nemesis was the goddess of divine indignation and retribution who punished excessive pride evil deeds undeserved happiness or good fortune and the absence of moderation She was the personification of the resentment aroused in both gods and mortals by those who committed crimes with impunity or who enjoyed undeserved luck n nTrue to her name which variously may be translated as 'she who distributes or deals out' 'due enactment' or 'divine vengeance' Nemesis was a feared and revered goddess With a discriminating eye she directed human affairs in such a way as to nmaintain equilibrium on earth Happiness and unhappiness were measured out by her with firm care being taken that happiness was not too frequent or too excessive If this happened Nemesis could bring about abrupt and catastrophic losses and suffering n nAs one who kept extravagant favors by Tyche (Luck Fortune) in check Nemesis was regarded as an avenging or punishing divinity Tyche was often irresponsible in handing out Luck and Fortune indiscriminately heaping gifts from her horn of plenty or depriving others of what they had n nBut woe be to the individual favored by Tyche who failed to give proper dues to the gods became too full of himself and boasted of his abundant riches or refused to improve the lot of his fellow humans by sharing his luck Indignant Nemesis would step in and snap the fool back to reality in short order humiliating him and causing his downfall n nAlong with Dike and Themis wise goddesses of Justice Nemesis was one of the assistants of Zeus the king of the Olympian gods who was regarded as the founder of law and order Her home was at Attic Rhamnus site of a magnificent sanctuary dedicated to the feared goddess of divine vengeance n nAbout sixty stades from Marathon as you go along the road by the sea to Oropus stands Rhamnus The dwelling houses are on the coast but a little way inland is a sanctuary of Nemesis the most implacable deity to men of violence It is thought that the wrath of this goddess fell also upon the foreigners who landed at Marathon For thinking in their pride that nothing stood in the way of their taking Athens they were bringing a piece of Parian marble to make a trophy convinced that their task was already finished n nOf this marble Pheidias made a statue of Nemesis and on the head of the goddess is a crown with deer and small images of Victory In her left hand she holds an apple branch in her right hand a cup on which are wrought Aethiopians As to the Aethiopians I could hazard no guess myself nor could I accept the statement of those who are convinced that the Aethiopians have been carved upon the cup because of the river Ocean For the Aethiopians they say dwell near it and Ocean is the father of Nemesis n nBeautiful Nemesis initially was portrayed without wings but in later descriptions she appeared as a winged goddess In her left hand she held an apple-branch rein lash sword or balance Her symbols and attributes were like those of Tyche: a wheel and a nship's rudder n nHer parents were said to be either Nyx (Night) alone without a father or the Titans Oceanus and Tethys: n nAlso deadly Nyx bare Nemesis to afflict mortal men n-Hesiod Theogony 223 n nAlexandros the Great was hunting on Mount Pagos near Smyrna and that after the hunt was over he came to a sanctuary of the Nemeseis and found there a spring and a plane-tree in front of the sanctuary growing over the water While he slept under the plane-tree it is said that the Nemeses appeared and bade him found a city there and remove into it the Smyranians from the old city So they migrated of their own free will nand believe in two Nemeses instead of one saying their mother is Nyx while the Athenians say that the father of the goddess in Rhamnos is Okeanos -Pausanias Description of Greece 753 n nNemesis was also known as Adrasteia which means 'inescapable' or 'Tracing Goddess' You could say that NemesisAdrasteia was the ancient Greeks' conscience nfor the goddess of retribution personified moral reverence for the natural order of things and provided a deterrence to wrongful action n nShe was also called Rhamnusia or Rhamnusis in honor of her sanctuary in Rhamnos n nNobody wanted to be hounded by Nemesis and even to this day her name means: n n1A source of harm or ruin: Uncritical trust is my nemesis n2Retributive justice in its execution or outcome: To follow the proposed course of action nis to invite nemesis n3An opponent that cannot be beaten or overcome n4One that inflicts retribution or vengeance n nThus you'll often read or hear quotes such as: n nThis is that ancient doctrine of nemesis who keeps watch in the universe and lets no offense go unchastised --Emerson n nA famous example of the retribution of Nemesis is the story of Narcissus This man was the beautiful son of the River Cephissus and the nymph Liriope He was so handsome that all women who beheld him at once fell in love with him The vain Narcissus however only had eyes for himself (you could say he suffered from I strain) and rebuffed all admirers n nOne such admirer was the nymph Echo who saw Narcissus and at once fell in love with him But the beautiful youth couldn't be bothered with the smitten one who slowly pined away leaving just the echo of her voice n nNemesis saw this and condemned the vain Narcissus to spend the rest of his days admiring his own reflection in the waters of a pool Eventually Narcissus died and was transformed into the flower that bears his name n nNemesis is considered by some to be the mother of Helen and the twins called the Dioscuri It's said that Zeus once fell in love with Nemesis (she had quite a bit of Aphrodite's beauty and some said she was just as gorgeous) and relentlessly pursued nher on land and sea Leery of his intentions Nemesis avoided Zeus by constantly changing forms finally transforming into a goose Not to be outdone Zeus in turn took the form of a swan and from the egg she laid came Helen the ultimate cause of the famous Trojan War n nBut some say that Helen was a daughter of Nemesis and Zeus for that she flying from the arms of Zeus changed herself into a goose but Zeus in his turn took the likeness of a swan and so enjoyed her and as the fruit of their loves she laid an egg and a certain shepherd found it in the groves and brought and gave it to Leda and she put it in a chest and kept it and when Helen was hatched in due time Leda brought her up as her own ndaughter n nHarry Thurston Peck in Harpers Dictionary of Classical Antiquities (1898) tells us that Nemesis was: n nA post-Homeric personification of the moral indignation felt at all derangements of the natural equilibrium of things whether by extraordinarily good fortune or by the arrogance usually attendant thereon According to Hesiod (Theog 223) she is the daughter of Night (Nyx) and with Aidos the goddess of Modesty left the earth on the advent of the Iron Age A legend makes her to have been by Zeus the mother of Helen and the Dioscuri As goddess of due proportion she hates every transgression of the bounds of moderation and restores the proper and normal order of things As in doing this she punishes wanton boastfulness she is a divinity of chastisement and vengeance n nShe enjoyed special honor in the Attic district of Rhamnus (where she was believed to be the daughter of Oceanus) and is often called the Rhamnusian goddess Her statue there (of which fragments were found in 1890) was said to have been executed by Phidias out of a block of Parian marble which the Persians had brought with them in presumptuous confidence to Marathon to erect a trophy of victory there She was also called Adrasteia that name appropriate only to the Phrygian Rhea-Cybel being interpreted as a Greek word with the meaning She whom none can escape She was also worshipped at Rome especially by victorious generals and was represented as a meditative thoughtful maiden with the attributes of proportion and control (a measuring-rod a bridle and a yoke) of punishment (a sword and scourge) and of swiftness (wings a wheel and a chariot drawn by griffins)

Poseidon was the ruler of the sea a powerful god in Greek mythology who was often called the Earth-shaker His father was the Titan Cronus who at the time was ruler of the Universe and his mother was Rhea Cronus was a paranoid ruler because it had been prophesized that one of his own sons would dethrone him just as Cronus had done to his father UranusThus Cronus would swallow the children whom Rhea bore him He figured that it was the safest way to ensure that none of his offspring overthrew himOne by one the children were swallowed by Cronus: first Hestia then Demeter Hera Hades and Poseidon (Some mythographers claim that Rhea tricked Cronus by presenting a foal instead of the baby Poseidon for consumption but most agree that Poseidon had been swallowed like the rest of his siblings)Needless to say this constant swallowing of her children enraged Rhea She bore her third son Zeus in the middle of the night and gave him for safekeeping to Gaea (Mother Earth) She fooled Cronus into believing he had swallowed his new son by substituting a rock wrapped in baby blanketsWhen Zeus grew up and with the help of Gaea and his mother Rhea he slipped Cronus a potion that made the Titan disgorge the swallowed children Being gods they were unharmed albeit a tad dazed and confused With Zeus serving as their leader Poseidon Hades Hestia Demeter and Hera waged war against the Titans for supremacy of the UniverseAssisted by the Cyclops (they gave Zeus his thunderbolts Poseidon his trident and Hades his helmet of invisibility) and the Hecatoncheires (the Hundred-handed-ones) the siblings fought a terrible war that lasted ten years In the end they were victorious banishing their vanquished foes to the deepest depths of the Underworld called Tartarus This dark and woeful place is as far beneath the earth as heaven is above the earth Around Tartarus runs a fence of bronze with gates of bronze which Poseidon fixed in such as way as to offer no escape and there the Titans were forever confinedAfter Zeus with his brothers and sisters defeated the Titans anddethroned Cronus the three brothers drew lots out of a helmet todetermine which one of the three realms each would rule Zeus won the heavens and thus became the supreme ruler Hades got the Underworld and Poseidon got the sea The Earth remained common to all threePoseidon was very powerful second only to Zeus himself Equal to Zeus in dignity though not in power he was reputed to be a surly and quarrelsome figurePoseidon at once got busy constructing a magnificent palace beneath the sea off Aegae in Euboea Splendid white chariot horses with brazen hooves and golden manes lived in the palace's spacious stables and an awesome golden chariot was always ready to transport the sea god about At the approach of Poseidon's chariot storms and foul weather would cease and sea monsters would rise from the depths playfully frisking around it like friendly dolphinsAs wonderful as his underwater palace was Poseidon still spent much of his time participating in the festivities in Olympus with the other godsPoseidons wife was Amphitrite granddaughter of the titan Oceanus At first Poseidon courted Thetis the Nereid because she was beautiful and was already accustomed to the sea-depths But when the respected Titan Themis prophesized that any son born to Thetis would be greater than his father wisely he backed off and looked elsewhere for a wifeNext he approached Amphitrite another Nereid who wanted nothing to do with Poseidon For whatever reason she was turned-off by the god of the sea and fled to the Atlas Mountains in order to escape his advancesNot to be denied Poseidon sent messengers all over the earth to look for her Eventually after much wandering a man named Delphinus located Amphitrite and was so convincing in pleading Poseidon's case and his love for her that at last she yielded and agreed to the marriage Delphinus himself organized the entire wedding and a splendid party it wasThe union of Poseidon and Amphitrite produced three children: Triton Rhode and Benthesicyme But like his brother Zeus Poseidon wasn't a very faithful husband and engaged in numerous affairs with goddesses nymphs and even mortalsUnderstandably jealous Amphitrite punished many of her husband's lovers just like Hera did to her husband Zeus' women She was particularly upset with Poseidon's infatuation with Scylla gorgeous daughter of Phorcys and was determined to punish her indiscretion Amphitrite threw magical herbs into Scylla's bathing pool and when the woman took her bath at once she transformed into a barking monster with six heads and twelve feetPoseidon was never fully satisfied with his share of the world and once even conspired with other Olympians to dethrone Zeus But his plot was discovered and in punishment Zeus exiled him to earth There he was to build the walls of Troy for king Laomedon He was helped by Apollo who was also banished from Olympus at that timeThe two Olympian gods assumed the likeness of men and undertook to fortify Troy for wages Apollo was able to move the heaviest of stones with just the sound of his lyre But when they had fortified it and the task was completed the foolish king Laomedon would not pay their wages Therefore Apollo sent a pestilence and Poseidon sent a Sea-monster which snatched away the people of the plainThe oracles foretold deliverance from these calamities if Laomedon would expose the maiden Hesione to be devoured by Poseidon's Sea-monster Not knowing what else to do the king followed the oracles' advice and fastened her to the rocks near the sea but at the last moment the greatest Greek hero Heracles (Hercules) saved her and she married TelamonGetting stiffed for his wages was also the chief reason why Poseidon was on the Greek side during the Trojan WarMany more Sea-monsters were unleashed by Poseidon to exactvengeance: Poseidon sent a Sea-monster against the Teucriansbecause Hierax a righteous man was devoted to Demeter and would not honor Poseidon When Queen Cassiopeia boasted of being better than the Nereids the water nymphs became angry and asked Poseidon to intervene The wrathful god sent a flood and yet another Sea-monster to invade the land Andromeda was exposed as a prey to this monster only to be rescued by the hero Perseus Poseidon also sent a bull from the sea and the horses of Hippolytus were startled entangling their master in the reins dragging him to a horrible deathAnother time Poseidon competed with the great Athena - goddess of wisdom war and the crafts - over who would gain patronage of the famous city state called Athens Poseidon struck the side of the Acropolis and a fountain spurted forth its water much to the amazement of the people However the water was salty which proved no use to the populace Athena presented the people with the first olive tree which was used for food oil and provided wood to burn in the winter The gods and goddesses had assembled to pass judgment with the males voting for the god of the sea and the females choosing Athena's olive tree Since the women outnumbered the men by one Athena's gift was judged to be the most useful and Athena was awarded the city which forever after carried her name - Athens Known for his anger and not being the best of sports Poseidonproceeded to sent huge waves to flood the area in a mean-spiritedparting gesture To appease Poseidon's wrath the women of Athens were deprived of their vote and the men forbidden to bear their mothers names In the shrine of Erechtheus there remained preserved a long time an olive tree and a pool of salt water which had been set there by Poseidon and Athena as tokens when they contended for the city Another dispute arose between Poseidon and Athena over the city of Troezen but Zeus nipped it in the bud by declaring that it was to be shared equally between the two an arrangement loathed by both parties Quarrelsome Poseidon thus engaged in disputes with: Zeus over the island of Aegina Dionysus over the island of Naxos Helios the sun god over the area of Corinth (Poseidon was upset because he received the Isthmus of Corinth only while Helios got the prestigious Acropolis of Corinth) Hera wife of Zeus got into it with Poseidon over Argolis and that one got real ugly with accusations flying all over the place and Poseidon claiming that the Olympians were biased against him Poseidon's argument with Hera was referred for arbitration to a panel of three River-gods who made a decision in favor of Hera Outraged Poseidon vowed revenge on them Zeus had forbidden him to bring on floods as he had done in Athens so the sea god did the exact opposite -- He dried up the streams of his three judges (Inachus Cephissus and Asterion) and they never again flowed in the summer But Poseidon could be compassionate Anymone was a Danaid (nymph of nature) who was greatly distressed by these droughts and taking pity on her Poseidon caused the Argive river of Lerna to perpetually flow bringing Anymone much-needed relief Poseidon liked to boast that he created the first horse and it wasaccepted that he instituted horse-racing He even claimed to haveconstructed the first horse bridle although Athena begs to differ on thatthe two rarely got along at first even though eventually they reconciled and worked on some common causes Like Zeus it took many years for Poseidon to mature and not always act belligerently Although Poseidon is adored for giving men the first horse his primary importance was as Lord of the Sea At his command winds rose and the most violent of storms began but when he drove in his golden chariot over the water the storms subsided and tranquil peace followed his wheels Ancient sailors and warriors would pray and offer tributes to the great Poseidon prior to undertaking a sea journey In turn Poseidon could be cruel and hostile to those who displeased him such as the hero of the Trojan War Odysseus who suffered great tribulations at the hands of Poseidon while embarked on his Odyssey back home Both the bull and the horse are associated with Poseidon but the bull is associated with many other gods as well so the horse can be considered his animalHe was always depicted carrying or using his distinguishing weapon the trident a three-pronged spear which he used to shatter and shake anything he pleased much like his brother Zeus used his thunderbolts That's why he was commonly referred to as the Earth Shaker The trident his symbol was the gift of the Cyclopes who had fought with the Olympians versus the TitansHe was always accompanied by his son Triton who was half man half fish Triton would blow on his seashell to announce Poseidon's arrival

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon The primary revelation of Dark Side of the Moon is what a little focus does for the band Roger Waters wrote a series of songs about mundane everyday details which aren't that impressive by themselves but when given the sonic backdrop of Floyd's slow atmospheric soundscapes and carefully placed sound effects they achieve an emotional resonance But what gives the album true power is the subtly textured music which evolves from ponderous neo-psychedelic art rock to jazz fusion and blues-rock before turning back to psychedelia It's dense with detail but leisurely paced creating its own dark haunting world Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon but no other record defines them quite as well as this onenPink Floyd is the premier space rock band Since the mid-'60s their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical operatic quality in both sound and words Despite their astral image the group was brought down to earth in the 1980s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and ultimately ownership of the band's very name After that time they were little more than a dinosaur act capable of filling stadiums and topping the charts but offering little more than a spectacular recreation of their most successful formulas Their latter-day staleness cannot disguise the fact that for the first decade or so of their existence they were one of the most innovative groups around in concert and (especially) in the studionnWhile Pink Floyd are mostly known for their grandiose concept albums of the 1970s they started as a very different sort of psychedelic band Soon after they first began playing together in the mid-'60s they fell firmly under the leadership of lead guitarist Syd Barrett the gifted genius who would write and sing most of their early material The Cambridge native shared the stage with Roger Waters (bass) Rick Wright (keyboards) and Nick Mason (drums) The name Pink Floyd seemingly so far-out was actually derived from the first names of two ancient bluesmen (Pink Anderson and Floyd Council) And at first Pink Floyd were much more conventional than the act into which they would evolve concentrating on the rock and RampB material that were so common to the repertoires of mid-'60s British bandsnnPink Floyd quickly began to experiment however stretching out songs with wild instrumental freak-out passages incorporating feedback electronic screeches and unusual eerie sounds created by loud amplification reverb and such tricks as sliding ball bearings up and down guitar strings In 1966 they began to pick up a following in the London underground on-stage they began to incorporate light shows to add to the psychedelic effect Most importantly Syd Barrett began to compose pop-psychedelic gems that combined unusual psychedelic arrangements (particularly in the haunting guitar and celestial organ licks) with catchy melodies and incisive lyrics that viewed the world with a sense of poetic childlike wondernnThe group landed a recording contract with EMI in early 1967 and made the Top 20 with a brilliant debut single Arnold Layne a sympathetic comic vignette about a transvestite The follow-up the kaleidoscopic See Emily Play made the Top Ten The debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn also released in 1967 may have been the greatest British psychedelic album other than Sgt Pepper's Dominated almost wholly by Barrett's songs the album was a charming fun house of driving mysterious rockers (Lucifer Sam) odd character sketches (The Gnome) childhood flashbacks (Bike Matilda Mother) and freakier pieces with lengthy instrumental passages (Astronomy Domine Interstellar Overdrive Pow R Toch) that mapped out their fascination with space travel The record was not only like no other at the time it was like no other that Pink Floyd would make colored as it was by a vision that was far more humorous pop-friendly and lighthearted than those of their subsequent epicsnnThe reason Pink Floyd never made a similar album was that Piper was the only one to be recorded under Barrett's leadership Around mid-1967 the prodigy began showing increasingly alarming signs of mental instability Barrett would go catatonic on-stage playing music that had little to do with the material or not playing at all An American tour had to be cut short when he was barely able to function at all let alone play the pop star game Dependent upon Barrett for most of their vision and material the rest of the group was nevertheless finding him impossible to work with live or in the studionnAround the beginning of 1968 guitarist Dave Gilmour a friend of the band who was also from Cambridge was brought in as a fifth member The idea was that Gilmour would enable the Floyd to continue as a live outfit Barrett would still be able to write and contribute to the records That couldn't work either and within a few months Barrett was out of the group Pink Floyd's management looking at the wreckage of a band that was now without its lead guitarist lead singer and primary songwriter decided to abandon the group and manage Barrett as a solo actnnSuch calamities would have proven insurmountable for 99 out of 100 bands in similar predicaments Incredibly Pink Floyd would regroup and not only maintain their popularity but eventually become even more successful It was early in the game yet after all the first album had made the British Top Ten but the group was still virtually unknown in America where the loss of Syd Barrett meant nothing to the media Gilmour was an excellent guitarist and the band proved capable of writing enough original material to generate further ambitious albums Waters eventually emerging as the dominant composer The 1968 follow-up to Piper at the Gates of Dawn A Saucerful of Secrets made the British Top Ten using Barrett's vision as an obvious blueprint but taking a more formal somber and quasi-classical tone especially in the long instrumental parts Barrett for his part would go on to make a couple of interesting solo records before his mental problems instigated a retreat into oblivionnnOver the next four years Pink Floyd would continue to polish their brand of experimental rock which married psychedelia with ever-grander arrangements on a Wagnerian operatic scale Hidden underneath the pulsing reverberant organs and guitars and insistently restated themes were subtle blues and pop influences that kept the material accessible to a wide audience Abandoning the singles market they concentrated on album-length works and built a huge following in the progressive rock underground with constant touring in both Europe and North America While LPs like Ummagumma (divided into live recordings and experimental outings by each member of the band) Atom Heart Mother (a collaboration with composer Ron Geesin) and More (a film soundtrack) were erratic each contained some extremely effective musicnnBy the early '70s Syd Barrett was a fading or nonexistent memory for most of Pink Floyd's fans although the group one could argue never did match the brilliance of that somewhat anomalous 1967 debut Meddle (1971) sharpened the band's sprawling epics into something more accessible and polished the science fiction ambience that the group had been exploring ever since 1968 Nothing however prepared Pink Floyd or their audience for the massive mainstream success of their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon which made their brand of cosmic rock even more approachable with state-of-the-art production more focused songwriting an army of well-time stereophonic sound effects and touches of saxophone and soulful female backup vocalsnnDark Side of the Moon finally broke Pink Floyd as superstars in the United States where it made number one More astonishingly it made them one of the biggest-selling acts of all time Dark Side of the Moon spent an incomprehensible 741 weeks on the Billboard album chart Additionally the primarily instrumental textures of the songs helped make Dark Side of the Moon easily translatable on an international level and the record became (and still is) one of the most popular rock albums worldwidennIt was also an extremely hard act to follow although the follow-up Wish You Were Here (1975) also made number one highlighted by a tribute of sorts to the long-departed Barrett Shine On You Crazy Diamond Dark Side of the Moon had been dominated by lyrical themes of insecurity fear and the cold sterility of modern life Wish You Were Here and Animals (1977) developed these morose themes even more explicitly By this time Waters was taking a firm hand over Pink Floyd's lyrical and musical vision which was consolidated by The Wall (1979)nnThe bleak overambitious double concept album concerned itself with the material and emotional walls modern humans build around themselves for survival The Wall was a huge success (even by Pink Floyd's standards) in part because the music was losing some of its heavy-duty electronic textures in favor of more approachable pop elements Although Pink Floyd had rarely even released singles since the late '60s one of the tracks Another Brick in the Wall became a transatlantic number one The band had been launching increasingly elaborate stage shows throughout the '70s but the touring production of The Wall featuring a construction of an actual wall during the band's performance was the most excessive yetnnIn the 1980s the group began to unravel Each of the four had done some side and solo projects in the past more troublingly Waters was asserting control of the band's musical and lyrical identity That wouldn't have been such a problem had The Final Cut (1983) been such an unimpressive effort with little of the electronic innovation so typical of their previous work Shortly afterward the band split up -- for a while In 1986 Waters was suing Gilmour and Mason to dissolve the group's partnership (Wright had lost full membership status entirely) Waters lost leaving a Roger-less Pink Floyd to get a Top Five album with Momentary Lapse of Reason in 1987 In an irony that was nothing less than cosmic about 20 years after Pink Floyd shed their original leader to resume their career with great commercial success they would do the same again to his successor Waters released ambitious Hera the Greek goddess called the Queen of Heaven was a powerful queen in her own right long before her marriage to Zeus the mighty king of the Olympian gods The goddess Hera ruled over the heavens and the earth responsible for every aspect of existence including the seasons and the weather Honoring her great capacity to nurture the world her very name translates as the Great Lady Our word galaxy comes from the Greek word gala meaning mother's milk legend has it that the Milky Way was formed from the milk spurting from the breasts of the Greek goddess Hera Queen of Heaven Where drops fell to earth fields of lilies sprung forth She was also worshipped as the Roman goddess Juno and the month of June (which is the most popular month for weddings) is named in her honor It is partly on account of Hera's great beauty and particularly her beautiful large eyes that she is linked to her sacred animal the cow and also the peacock with its iridescent feathers having eyes The cow symbolizes the goddess Hera's nurturing watchfulness over her subjects while the peacock symbolizes her luxury beauty and immortality In ancient times Hera was revered as being the only one the Greek goddesses who accompanied a woman through every step of her life The goddess Hera blessed and protected a woman's marriage bringing her fertility protecting her children and helping her find financial security Hera was in short a complete woman overseeing both private and public affairs But it was Hera's uncommon beauty that attracted the attention of her future husband the lusty Zeus who tricked Hera into taking him to her breast by changing himself into a small frightened and wounded bird that elicited her pity Once cradled in Hera's bosom Zeus changed back into his manly form and tried to take her but she resisted his advances putting him off until he promised to marry her The delay only increased his desire for Hera and once married they had the longest honeymoon on record lasting over 300 years nfortunately the goddess Hera's life was not to remain so enviable Once the honeymoon was over Zeus reverted to his earlier playboy lifestyle married or not compulsively seducing or raping whichever of the Greek goddesses or mortal women caught his wandering eye His amorous exploits left the regal goddess Hera feeling betrayed and humiliated on numerous occasions To make matters even worse Zeus often showed more favor towards the offspring of his illicit liaisons than he did to the children Hera bore him In Greek mythology Hera although wounded remained faithful and steadfast in her loyalty to Zeus electing instead to vent her fury on the other women rather than Zeus himself even though it was usually Zeus who had deceived seduced or raped the innocent women This wasn't always Hera's reaction however On one occasion she decided to give Zeus a taste of his own medicine by conceiving and delivering a child by herself proving that she really didn't need him anyway It didn't work out quite as she'd hoped She gave birth as the sole parent to Hephaestus (God of the Forge) who was born with a deformity that made him lame Zeus was not impressed and Hera rejected her son sending him away from Mount Olympus to grow up among the mortals At other times in reaction to his continuing infidelities the goddess Hera simply withdrew from Zeus and the other Olympian gods and goddesses and wandered around the earth often in darkness always eventually ending up back at the home where she'd spend her happy youth In spite of how he had mistreated her Zeus did love Hera and more than that felt as if part of himself was missing when she was not there for him Once panicked that Hera didn't seem to be in any hurry to return this time he invited her to a mock marriage ceremony that he'd arranged to a princess near her home She couldn't help but be amused to discover him making his vows not to a princess but a statue Hera's laughter broke the ice and she forgave him and returned to Mount Olympus to resume her role as wife and queen It is unfortunate that it is not the goddess Hera's nurturing or her steadfastness in the face of adversity that are remembered today but mostly the stories of her jealousy and vindictiveness Some historians argue that the goddess Hera was unjustly portrayed in the famous stories of Homer probably because he was himself victimized by a mean and shrewish wife More than any of the other Greek goddesses the goddess Hera reminds us that there is both light and dark within each of us and that joy and pain are inextricably linked in life The Greek goddess Hera represents the fullness of life and affirms that we can use our own wisdom in the pursuit of any goal we choose

British psychedelic album other than Sgt Pepper's Dominated almost wholly by Barrett's songs the album was a charming fun house of driving mysterious rockers (Lucifer Sam) odd character sketches (The Gnome) childhood flashbacks (Bike Matilda Mother) and freakier pieces with lengthy instrumental passages (Astronomy Domine Interstellar Overdrive Pow R Toch) that mapped out their fascination with space travel The record was not only like no other at the time it was like no other that Pink Floyd would make colored as it was by a vision that was far more humorous pop-friendly and lighthearted than those of their subsequent epicsnnThe reason Pink Floyd never made a similar album was that Piper was the only one to be recorded under Barrett's leadership Around mid-1967 the prodigy began showing increasingly alarming signs of mental instability Barrett would go catatonic on-stage playing music that had little to do with the material or not playing at all An American tour had to be cut short when he was barely able to function at all let alone play the pop star game Dependent upon Barrett for most of their vision and material the rest of the group was nevertheless finding him impossible to work with live or in the studionnAround the beginning of 1968 guitarist Dave Gilmour a friend of the band who was also from Cambridge was brought in as a fifth member The idea was that Gilmour would enable the Floyd to continue as a live outfit Barrett would still be able to write and contribute to the records That couldn't work either and within a few months Barrett was out of the group Pink Floyd's management looking at the wreckage of a band that was now without its lead guitarist lead singer and primary songwriter decided to abandon the group and manage Barrett as a solo actnnSuch calamities would have proven insurmountable for 99 out of 100 bands in similar predicaments Incredibly Pink Floyd would regroup and not only maintain their popularity but eventually become extremely effective musicnnBy the early '70s Syd Barrett was a fading or nonexistent memory for most of Pink Floyd's fans although the group one could argue never did match the brilliance of that somewhat anomalous 1967 debut Meddle (1971) sharpened the band's sprawling epics into something more accessible and polished the science fiction ambience that the group had been exploring ever since 1968 Nothing however prepared Pink Floyd or their audience for the massive mainstream success of their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon which made their brand of cosmic rock even more approachable with state-of-the-art production more focused songwriting an army of well-time stereophonic sound effects and touches of saxophone and soulful female backup vocalsnnDark Side of the Moon finally broke Pink Floyd as superstars in the United States where it made number one More astonishingly it made them one of the biggest-selling acts of all time Dark Side of the Moon spent an incomprehensible 741 to rehab 'Then I realized it isn't a shame to ask for help' n nJONNA NYGREN broken up with Ville Valo nI returned stronger from the rehab n nIn the world of society columns Jonna Nygren 27 should have been a lucky girl There Jonna lives as a rock wife for the lead singer Ville Valo 30 of the most successful Finnish band Him She spinned around in celebrity-model events and got her own show to host at Moon-tv Sub-tv and latest MTV n nThe couple got engaged last summer in Provinssirock and instead of rings they got tattoos on their fingers and bought a house from Helsinki's most expensive neighborhood The fans cried for the taken Ville and Jonna got suggestions for an interview with the idea of 'Finland's most hated normal person' She declined for that story but in an other revealed that the couple were thinking of names for future children Ville praised the power of relationship and told that his lady was hoping for a winter wedding n nAt the change of the year mud was thrown over the dream headlines Jonna threw a fit in a bar and screamed holes in her mans ear Ville thought to be a gentleman shook the peace of the high class building made noise and threatened the neighbor The rocker ended up in jail n nIn the beginning of March there were news of the couples shock break up A few column weeks later Jonna ended up in an hospital Jonna says she has heard dozens of reasons and versions of why and in what care she ended up in Now shes feeling good enough to tell what was really going on behind the tabloids n n-The most ridiculous comment came from a half acquaintance According to that I was partying so wildly after the break up that I ended up in rehab Right last months have been absolutely hilarious my life continuous May day Things really aren't the way everybody thinks they are Jonna corrects nWell how are they then n nGoing asleep and waking up with medication n nIn the beginning of May the tabloids were screaming 'Break up from Ville drove to a vicious circle- nJONNA WENT TO REHAB nIn reality burn out and its self medication drove Jonna to rehab Jonna counts that her problems started about half a year ago When Ville was touring with Him Jonna lived alone in the couples' apartment and killed time with working Too much n nReal life really wasn't just living as a rock wife Jonna has worked in restaurant business her whole working life and in addition to that has done modeling jobs and TV-hosting The shifts at the favorite restaurants of Helsinki could stretch out to 3 am and waking up for the days hosting job was at 5am She started feeling overtired and irritated Even though the fatigue weighted heavy sleep didn't come n n-I was always tense weepy and depressed Was so damn tired but just had to go on I was constantly taking more work although I wasn't feeling good n nJonna started medicating her insomnia and bad feelings n n-When I got home in the evenings I drank red wine so I could relax Sleep on the other hand didn't come without tranquilizers or sleeping pills That lead to that I in the morning had to stuff my face full with caffeine tablets because the usual coffee wakening didn't help anymore she tells n nOver-tiredness stress and pressure of the relationship got deeper and worse It was a full job for Jonna to get out of her house and take care of the agreed shifts but still she couldn't recognize the condition she was getting into n n-In that treadwheel I didn't even notice the symptoms of depression I felt violent anxiety and often felt like crying but didn't stop to think what was wrong with me n nThe final stop came in the middle of March when Jonna withdrew to her home n n-I was drinking by myself and was physically so dead tired that I couldn't even drag myself to the bathroom or the toilet Everything felt so overwhelming My friends came to visit and found me in the apartment in a confused state of mind I hadn't showered for a week I didn't have strenght for anything n nThe friends stayed for the night to support Jonna and contacted her mother The psychiatric-mother who works with youngsters who have drug problems understood immediately that now care was needed not scolding n n-Only after the others came for help I realized that this is what I needed I felt enormously relieved It felt like a rock had been lifted from me when I was found and I got to say that I needed help n nMother guided to rehab n nAlthough the ultimate reason for Jonnas sickness were depression and over-tiredness firstly the drug dependence that had formed in the near months had to be taken care of Jonna was guided to the Aurora hospital in Helsinki but that didn't feel like the right place not in her or the doctors opinion With mothers advice she went to Pellas which is specialized for rehabitation n n-In the connection you talk about drug rehab Though I wasn't doing drugs my medication dependency needed the same kind of treatment n nJonna praises Pellas' 11-person rehabitation center A home-like atmosphere and an intimate spirit dominated the little unit n n-The other recoveries were amazing personalities I don't remember laughing so much in ages We nwere able to laugh at ourselves and our restlessness That helped the recovery On the other hand you realized it isn't a shame to ask for help There are others alike n nOnly in the rehab Jonna realized in what a bad shape she had been in nShe portrays herself as a performer who tries to please everybody from friend to employer n n-I like to take care of others That way you forget your own troubles A nurse in Pallas reminded me that now I was resting myself There I realized that I don't have to be a superwoman and assiduously assure that I can handle everything Its ok to say that I'm completely dead tired n nPallas concentrates on resting discussing eating well and exercising Jonna had lost weight and was in a fragile condition so rehab and insomnia were tough for the body too n n-I did handiwork when I got an allowance for knitting needles They were forbidden in the house rules but luckily the nurses saw that knitting is an effective way for me to calm down n nJonna was in Pellas for a month During that time she was only in contact with her mother The rest of the world had to wait n n-When the month came to close the thought of leaving was frightening I had gotten used to having support near My other life had been on pause for the whole treatment and I was nervous on what kind of pressures I would encounter in the outer world n nAfter the rehab Jonna started therapy At first she had a threshold with talking to a complete stranger When the beginning reservedness was gotten over with the care-relationship became encouraging Therapy concentrates on taking care of the depression and finding out where it all started A therapist doesn't give you advice but helps you think and understand n n-I have learned enormously about myself and realized how things are connected to each other and how our experiences affect us This has been an interesting journey in myself and it probably would suit everybody even if they weren't going through a dramatic stop like this n nVille calls daily n nThe relationship was ended over the phone- VILLE DUMPED JONNA The engaged couples break was in the tabloids in the beginning of March It was told that Ville left Jonna with a text message Jonna doesn't talk about Ville and herself as we anymore Instead of a break up she would rather call it a break She doesn't want to chew over the reasons of the break here n n-We were both drunk then one in Athens one in Finland We were having a war with text messages racingly sending each other mean bitchy messages It was a blunder episode of two drunkards where one was trying to focus on its job the other on keeping its head together Intoxication is the right state when going through these kinds of things sneers Jonna n nThe relationship that has laster for three years is on penalty until Ville gets back to Finland from his American tour when the couple gets to talk face to face The rumors of a complete break up are rubbish n n-We talk together on the phone daily Ville always calls when hes going to sleep and again when he has woken up We talk about this and that How are you eating porridge what are you doing watching a movie n nJonna reminds that every relationship has problems that are not supposed to be straightened out over the phone You have to talk these things through face to face n n-Even though it's hard to believe things have a habit of straightening out I have my idea on more than for the one who leaves Jonna remarks n nThe one on the road has its traveling routines and can focus tightly on working but frustration and longing lurks to the one waiting at home n n-But I don't blame the job for what happened between us When I got into the relationship Ville was already a successful rockstar and I did know where I got myself into n nTo the brake up fuss Jonna takes a share of publicity with her jobs on Moon-TV Sub-TV and now on MTV To gossiping Jonna has an uncaring attitude n n-Half acquitances call and tell things on our behalf So what That doesn't feel like anything There are always lurkers and I don't view them as my friends We had a habit of sending SMS on who found the most 'bomb' headline n nWhat doesn't piss you off anymore strengthens n nTHE SICK LEAVE CONINUES STILL told the tabloids but Jonna is on the better half of the recovery Therapy continues regularly and Jonna has slowly returned to restaurant jobs When MTVs Headbangers ball returns from the summer brake Jonna will continue to host it n nRight after the rehab Jonna felt like the normal life wouldn't work She wasn't able to sleep and couldn't find a good rhythm n n-The next phase was what doesn't kill pisses you off With the support of others I could carry on even if it was strength taking Then came the best phase of recovery: What doesn't piss you off anymore strengthens I could look back and notice that jes- I went through quite a mess but came through as a much stronger human I understand myself others and the society better n nJonna used to think that exhaustion was a sign of weakness Close relations and doctors have praised her to be brave she did confess she needed help and even told the public about her hell n n-Going to rehab was the best opinion for me at that moment I wasn't the first definitely not the last and asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of n nJonna is thankful for the support her friends gave her She hadn't realized how many people she had who cared about her n n-Though then there are those who think I was in rehab because I was crazy n nJonna admits that she couldn't have survived without the help of her mother Mom knew that instead of condemnation understanding was needed It would have been easy to turn your back on your drunkard and take a condemnated attitude n n-My mother was an absolutely fabulous help and the tough experience has brought us together Lets see when I bear to leave from her There we lay next to my mom my little sister and I Right now it's the safest place on earth

This is my DRAWING Do NOT use it as a base So after more then one and a half year I edited Sarah's (older) twin sister Yeah they are so like twins XD I know that they are totally different but it doesn't matters 'cause it sometimes happened that twins are not alike Rina got her looks from her grandmother (Kasai's mother) So yes she is a medical ninja xD Rina is earth element ninja but she rarely uses that kind of jutsu 'cause she is mostly in the hospital She is working all the time Rina was always interested i medical ninjutsu but as she passed Chunin exams she spent more time studying medical ninjutsu and soon she becomes one of the bests She is very kind person She is realist and very intelligent person (not like Shikamaru but still intelligent) She is a bit workaholic Rina enjoys in helping people so most of the time she work as a doctor or she works in a department for cures but sometimes works as a diagnostician About her relationships: Her best friend is Kozuke Hitachi (Sushi's RPC) She is close to both of their sisters but she is maybe a little bit closer to Sarah tho she is always sick so Rina needs to heal her and stuff xD She is also in a good relationship with her father Yeah in Shippuden she is just an ordinary doctor while in New Generation she becomes the Medical Chief So that would be it I think XD Sorry for a long description xD Hope you like it xD

Princess Mazal is another character from The Faerie's Child She is Miriam's first cousin the daughter of Queen Malka's younger sister Princess Makhshefa She was raised as royalty and for the first seventeen years of her life she was third in line for the throne (after Makhshefa as the faeries of Karka Kasum or Kasumis were unaware of Miriam's existance) She is royal through and through very dignified and self-controlled She was given an excellent education and has memorized the entire Kasumi history She can also dance and sing and writes music speeches essays and poetry impeccably She can also play every type of instrument In addition she keeps well aware of the world around her and has an excellent head for politics and knows everything about protocol tradition and Kasumi culture She is also trained in every martial art including knife-throwing (she has never missed) The knife she is wearing in her belt is enchanted when she throws it it is immediately replaced with a new one meaning that she can never be disarmed and also that she never has to go running after it to retrieve it A natural leader as well as something of a Popular Princess Queen Bee type Mazal can be condescending vain spoiled snobbish and selfish as well as ambitious and rather power-hungry She also has a terrible temper and can be bitingly sarcastic but her main flaw is her misguided loyalty to her mother Makhshefa who is truly evil Out of this loyalty Mazal often helps her mother with plans and actions that she really disapproves of or ought to (she has been rather corrupted by Makhshefa) such as political murders In spite of this Mazal is essentially a good person and has incredible courage as well as loyalty to those few who earn her loyalty She has high standards both for herself and others a strong sense of duty and incredible inner strength She is a huge celebrity in Karka Kasum (as would be expected) and most Kasumi girls of all ages want to be her Although in Kasumi years Mazal was born hundreds of years after Miriam (Makhshefa had her late in life even by faerie standards - and an average faerie life-span is anywhere between 230 to 500 years) time moves more slowly on Earth therefore when Miriam arrived in Karka Kasum at the age of twelve Mazal was already seventeen and the five-year age difference remained Mazal is exactly five feet tall (tall by faerie standards) but wouldn't appear short even to a human because of her perfect poise and posture (more evidence of her royal training) She has shoulder-length straight shiny golden-blonde hair with an almost choppy layered look golden-cream skin which (like that of all faeries) always glows as if hit by direct sunlight (no matter where she is) high cheekbones a high forehead a narrow aristocratic nose dark lips emerald green eyes set at a tilt pointed ears and emerald-green wings like giant butterfly wings She is considered extremely beautiful even by faerie standards and is always elegantly and fashionably dressed (such as here in an emerald-green gown of the medieval-ish style popular in Karka Kasum with a wreath of emerald-green leaves - which will never wilt - around her head) She is also extremely graceful (even by faerie standards) and moves with a combination of strength and grace Mazal also can fly and do magic (all faeries have wings and can fly but only the nobility can do magic) Her magic is characterized by emerald-green light or emerald-green fire which she can do various things with (hit people set things on fire kill people make a shield out of it grab things with it make a hole in something) She can also conjure and see the future which are unusual gifts As in everything else she was given an excellent education in magic and knows almost everything about it She is one of the most powerful faeries in Karka Kasum Like that of all faeries her magic does not work if she is touching iron or even enclosed in it The crystal she is wearing around her neck is a star-stone a piece of a fallen star (in Karka Kasum stars are made of a diamond-like stone that glows as if it has a flame inside) All faerie nobility wear star-stone pendants because star-stone allows them to more easily focus and control their power The diamond-shaped star-stone pendant is emerald-green because it has obsorbed her magic but the links of the chain are also made of star-stone (in its regular diamond-light color) A faerie noble's magic wings and eyes are always the same color and like most Mazal has adopted that color (emerald-green) as her signature color meaning that all of her dresses and belongings her room etc are that color I am fairly pleased with this drawing of Mazal but I think she looks more sensitive and less intelligent and strong than I meant the character to be I also don't like the wings so much they are kind of the wrong color and I mean them to be solid not patterned Despite many obvious differences I somewhat modelled Mazal on Queen Elizabeth I especially when she was a Princess

Ares is the great Olympian God of War Battlelust Civil Order and Manly Courage Ares who became the Greek god of war had a miserable childhood The only son of the mighty Zeus ruler of the Olympians and his wife Hera Ares was disliked by his father from the moment he was born and was barely tolerated from then on Perhaps Zeus just couldn't warm up to the little guy because he hadn't had a part in Ares' conception or his birth Hera with the help of a magical herb had managed to get herself pregnant with the help of Zeus or any man a process called parthenogenesis (Note: Most myths name Ares as the son who was born as a result of this immaculate conception but in some versions the son was Hephaestus)Hera had done this to even the score with her husband for having given birth to Dionysus by himself A short version of that story: Semele one of Zeus' many lovers lay dying while pregnant with Zeus' son Dionysus With the help of Hermes Zeus removed the unborn child and implanted him under the skin of his thigh where he remained until he was ready to be born For whatever reason Zeus failed to bond with his infant son Ares Zeus was not even particularly concerned when the young boy went missing a few years later and didn't expend much effort looking for the poor lad As it turns out the young Ares had been abducted by two playmates the giant Aloadai twins who had caught him and locked him in a bronze jar Ares stayed captive in the bronze jar almost losing his mind in captivity until the stepmother of the unruly twins figured out what had happened and told Zeus' assistant Hermes who was able to release Ares from the jarAfter this incident Hera decided that Ares' might be better off living somewhere else and arranged for him to live with Priapus one of the minor deities Priapus trained the young Ares in the art of dancing and later in the martial artsEven though he was well-trained and served as the god of war Ares wasn't a great fighter and lost many of his battles especially those involving his half-sister and arch-enemy Athena who was the goddess of wisdom as well as the goddess of war (not to mention being Daddy's favorite) Ares represented war conducted up close and personal hand to hand combat and the frenzy of battle and bloodlust Athena and Zeus superbly rational favored war at a distance strategic planning playing according to the rules of the game cold and calculating by comparison Ares style was instinctual passionate and primitivenot destined to make him appear heroic in the eyes of a culture that valued reason and moderation There were other reasons as well: The Greek god Ares the god least favored by the citizens of Greece and by his parents (Zeus and his wife Hera) was seen by the ancient Greeks as a mercenary warrior filled with a bloodlust that could not be appeased and a fickle god as well one who would fight for either side just to have a chance to vent his rage Ares' unpopularity was probably inevitable given that the Greeks of that time were mostly involved in petty wars amongst themselves wars where allegiances were unclear and shifted frequently Any god of war would have found it very difficult to please everyone in that situationIt's easy to see why Ares' other incarnation as Mars the Roman God of War fared much better -- the Roman viewpoint was no doubt influenced by the fact that Rome was usually at war with foreign powers so that a god of war could be someone that could be worshipped and viewed as heroic one always battling for a just cause (ie their side) During the Trojan War Ares fought on the side of the Trojans against the Greeks as a show of support for his lover Aphrodite who had set the war in motion This did not win him any points with the other Olympians who except for Apollo supported the Greeks He charged at Athena who was taunting him about it and she calmly reached down and picked up a rock and smashed him over the head with it stopping his advanceAthena also convinced one of the Greek warriors to wound Ares in the side during the battle and Ares bellowed so loudly in pain and rage that the earth shook He complained to Zeus about Athena's humiliating him on the battlefield and Zeus dismissively called him a whine who enjoyed nothing but brawling Ares rarely went out of his way to come to the aid of his fellow Olympians But once bored with the endless petty wars of the Greeks he decided to rescue Hades who was being held captive by King Sisyphus Ares came to his assistance threatening to decapitate Sisyphus if he didnt release him and turn himself in as Hades prisoner Trembling with fear Sisyphus surrendered to HadesAres may not have matched the Olympian ideal of rationality and moderation but he was not without his followers Unfortunately they were mostly a band of malevolent minor deities and mortals including several of his sons most of whom ended with unhappy fates Ares usually rode into battle accompanied by his two sons Phobos (Fear) and Daiemos (Panic) Although the Greek god Ares was heavily criticized for reacting emotionally rather than rationally and for not always following the rules he was quick to jump to the defense of those with whom he felt a kinship including his large brood of offspring Unfortunately his feelings often propelled him into battles that he could not winWhen one of his sons was killed during the Trojan one every doubted that Ares had courageBut what of his loves Ares never married although he had over twenty lovers who bore him children And apparently his love affairs weren't overnighters but were long lasting relationships because many of them bore him several children Being deceptive or even indirect could not be listed among his shortcomings Unlike the other Greek gods Ares did not rely on trickery abduction or rape to establish his love affairs Ares is best known for his long-term love affair with the goddess Aphrodite the goddess of romance and beauty His lengthy love affair with Aphrodite led to the birth of four children--their daughter Harmonia (Harmony) later became the mother of the Amazons a tribe of fearsome warrior women The tabloids were probably invented for the sole home n nPersephone's youthful beauty drew the attention of Hades the god of the underworld and he could not help falling in love with her One day as Persephone reached over to pick a flower the earth opened and the arm of Hades reached up from the underworld n nAnd so Hades abducted her dragging her back to his kingdom n nHearing Persephone's screams the goddess Demeter rushes to the meadow but cannot find Persephone Carrying a torch Demeter traveled the world day and night never eating or resting searching futilely for her daughter nPoseidon god of the sea noticed the goddess Demeter as she traveled and pursued her with amorous intent Then Demeter tried to fool him by changing herself into a mare and hiding herself in the middle of a herd of horses but he was not fooled Poseidon saw through Demeter's disguise turned himself into a stallion and took her at his will n nWhen Demeter continued her journey in search of her daughter she met an old and poor man who was gathering firewood who invited her to return to his home to eat supper with his family and to rest on her journey When she told him that she was searching for her daughter he wished her success and told her that he understood her suffering since his son lay dying at home Demeter goddess of compasion changed her mind and went with the kindly man stopping only once to gather some poppies by the path Entering his humble home Demeter went straight away to the boy's bedside and kissed the boy lovingly on the cheek Immediately the pallor left his face and his breathing eased as Demeter's love had restored the son to full health nAlthough it was the custom of the Greek goddesses and gods to become very vindictive toward anyone who failed to honor them in a dignified fashion Demeter was such a kind goddess that she seldom utilized this privilege One of the few times was when she stopped on her travels to quench her thirst by drinking from a spring and heard a man named Ascaelabus laughing at the sound of her gulping the fresh water Embarrassed and angry at the man for being so rude Demeter turned him into a lizard n n Resuming her search she soon encountered Hecate goddess of the crossroads who advised her to speak with Helio goddess of the sun reasoning that since she had been riding her chariot (the sun) through the sky that day she had surely seen what had happened to Persephone Helio told the goddess Demeter what she had seen and that Persephone was now ensconced as Hades' wife and Queen of the Underworld She also gave her the shocking news that Zeus himself had sanctioned the marriage giving Hades permission to abduct Persephone nUnderstandably the goddess Demeter felt betrayed Renouncing her divine duties that included bringing fertility to the land Demeter left Mount Olympus swearing that the earth would remain barren until her daughter was returned to her She took refuge in the city of Eleusis Disguised as an old woman the goddess Demeter was met the city rulers two young daughters at the well and they liking her immensely invited her to return to their home to meet their mother There she met their mother who was cuddling her infant son This must have stirred Demeter's longing for her abducted daughter horribly Demeter became profoundly depressed almost catatonic eyes gazing off into the distance and unwilling or unable to even speak n n Everyone tried to all that they knew to cheer their guest but it was to no avail Eventually one of the household servants a middle-aged maid named Baubo came and sat in front of Demeter and started talking mostly making humorous comments (most likely of the male-bashing sort) some of them quite risque Encouraged when she saw the beginnings of a smile forming on Demeter's grief stricken face Baubo hiked up her skirt and mooned the goddess Demeter responded with a deep belly laugh that brought her out of the deep depression Her good nature now restored Demeter was soon hired to work as a nursemaid to the infant son of the city's ruler nCaring for him lovingly feeding him on the nectar and ambrosia of the gods Demeter grew very attached to the young Demophoon and decided to make him immortal But just as Demeter was holding his feet over the fire (the ritual which would transform him into an Olympian god Demophoon's mother entered the room n nMistakenly believing that Demeter was about to burn her son she began to scream The goddess Demeter then dropped her disguise revealing the beautiful goddess that she truly was and berated the mother for her stupidity in stopping the ritual that would have given her son immortality n nIn addition Demeter demanded that a temple be built in her honor This was done and the goddess Demeter remained there sitting alone in the darkness once again depressed and grieving for her lost daughter n nAll this time with the goddess Demeter refusing to function the land grew barren and the harvests ceased the earth saw a winter that did not end Zeus finally opens his eyes to what was happening and sent messengers to apologize and coax the goddess Demeter to return n nDemeter however remained adamant that she would not return until Persephone was rescued Finally Zeus gave in and sent Hermes to command Hades to release Persephone nPersephone upon hearing the news rejoiced for she had missed her mother sorely As she was leaving Hades offered her a pomegranate to eat Persephone had refused all food while she had been in the underworld and was surely hungry n nAlthough she undoubtedly knew that those who ate anything in the underworld were not allowed to return to the earth Persephone accepted Hades' gift eating only the seeds Hermes borrowed Hades chariot and stallions and flew Persephone home to her mother as Zeus had ordered n nDemeter was not pleased that Persephone had eaten the pomegranate seeds and would have to return to the underworld for four months during each year but was otherwise overjoyed to be reunited with her daughter n nHappily Demeter resumed her divine duties and restored the fertility of the earth Each year the goddess Demeter longs for her absent daughter and withdraws her favors from the earth for a period we know as winter but Persephone returns each spring to end her desolation nOnce Persephone was safely returned albeit for only a third of a year the Greek goddess Demeter decided to reside in her temple in Eleusis where she had enjoyed the welcome and support of her friends during her long search for Persephone n n There she developed the Eleusian mysteries a series of profound religious ceremonies that taught her initiates how to live joyfully and how to die without fear nThe story of Greek goddess Demeter illustrates the tremendous capacity of a woman to love and The son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of Artemis Apollo was the god of music (principally the lyre and he directed the choir of the Muses) and also of prophecy colonization medicine archery (but not for war or hunting) poetry dance intellectual inquiry and the carer of herds and flocks He was also a god of light known as Phoebus (radiant or beaming and he was sometimes identified with Helios the sun god) He was also the god of plague and was worshiped as Smintheus (from sminthos rat) and as Parnopius (from parnops grasshopper) and was known as the destroyer of rats and locust and according to Homer's Iliad Apollo shot arrows of plague into the Greek camp Apollo being the god of religious healing would give those guilty of murder and other immoral deeds a ritual purification Sacred to Apollo are the swan (one legend says that Apollo flew on the back of a swan to the land of the Hyperboreans he would spend the winter months among them) the wolf and the dolphin His attributes are the bow and arrows on his head a laurel crown and the cithara (or lyre) and plectrum But his most famous attribute is the tripod the symbol of his prophetic powers n nWhen the goddesss Hera the wife of Zeus (it was he who had coupled with Leto) found out about Leto's pregnancy she was outraged with jealousy Seeking revenge Hera forced Leto to roam the earth in search of a place to give birth n nSince Hera had forbidden Leto to stay anywhere on earth either on terra-ferma or an island at sea the only place to seek shelter was Delos being in the center of the Aegean and also difficult to reach as there were strong under-currents because it was said to be a floating island Because it was a floating island it was not considered either of Hera's prohibitions and so Leto was able to give birth to the divine twins Apollo and Artemis (before Leto gave birth to Apollo the island was encircled by a flock of swans this is why the swan was sacred to him) As a gesture of thanks Delos was secured to the sea-bed by four columns to give it stability and from then on it became one of the most important sanctuaries to Apollo (A variation of Apollo's birth was that the jealous Hera had incarcerated Ilithyia the goddess of childbirth but the other gods intervened forcing Hera to release Ilithyia which allowed Leto to give birth ) n nApollo's first achievement was to rid Pytho (Delphi) of the serpent (or dragon) Python This monstrous beast protected the sanctuary of Pytho from its lair beside the Castalian Spring There it stood guard while the Sibyl gave out her prophecies as she inhaled the trance inducing vapors from an open chasm Apollo killed Python with his bow and arrows (Homer wrote he killed the fearsome dragon Python piercing it with his darts) Apollo not only took charge of the oracle but rid the neighboring countryside of widespread destruction as Python had destroyed crops sacked villages and polluted streams and springs n nHowever to make amends for killing Python as the fearsome beast was the son of Gaia Apollo had to serve king Admetus for nine years (in some versions eight) as a cowherd This he did and when he returned to Pytho he came in the guise of a dolphin bringing with him priests from Crete (Apollo's cult title Delphinios meaning dolphin or porpoise is probably how Delphi was so named) After killing Python and taking possession of the oracle the god of light (Phobus) became known as Pythian Apollo He dedicated a bronze tripod to the sanctuary and bestowed divine powers on one of the priestesses and she became known as the Pythia It was she who inhaled the hallucinating vapors from the fissure in the temple floor while she sat on a tripod chewing laurel leaves After she mumbled her answer a male priest would translate it for the supplicant n nDelphi became the most important oracle center of Apollo there were several including Clarus and Branchidae n nApollo as with Zeus his father had many love affairs with goddesses and mortals Apollo's infatuation for the nymph Daphne which had been invoked by the young god of love Eros because Apollo had mocked him saying his archery skills were pathetic and Apollo's singing had also irritated him n nDaphne was the beautiful daughter of the river god Ladon and she was constantly pursued by Apollo To escape from Apollo's insistent behavior she fled to the mountains but the persistent Apollo followed her Annoyed by this she asked the river god Peneus for help which he did As soon as Apollo approached Daphne he tried to embrace her but when he stretched out his arms she transformed into a laurel tree Apollo distraught by what had happened made the laurel his sacred tree Apollo also loved Cyrene she was another nymph and she bore Apollo a son: Aristaeus a demi-god who became a protector of cattle and fruit trees and a deity of hunting husbandry and bee-keeping He taught men dairy skills and the use of nets and traps in hunting n nThe most famous mortal loves of Apollo was Hecuba she was the wife of Priam the king of Troy She bore him Troilius Foretold by an oracle as long as Troilius reached the age of twenty Troy could not be defeated But the hero Achilles ambushed and killed him when the young prince and his sister Polyxena secretly visited a spring Apollo also fell in love with Cassandra the sister of Troilius and daughter of Hecuba and Priam He seduced Cassandra on the promise that he would teach her the art of prophecy but having learnt the prophetic art she rejected him Apollo being angry of her rejection punished her by declaring her prophecies never to be accepted or believed n nAsclepius the god of healing was also Apollo's offspring after his union with Coronis who was daughter of Phlegyas king of the Lapiths While she was pregnant by Apollo Coronis fell in love with Ischys son of Elatus but a crow informed Apollo of the affair Apollo sent his twin sister Artemis to kill Coronis and Artemis carried out he brothers wishes While her body was burning on the funeral pyre Apollo removed the unborn child and took him to Chiron who raised the child Asclepius n nApollo also as did his father Zeus fall in love with one of his own gender Hyacinthus a Spartan prince He was very handsome and athletic which inflamed the passions of Apollo One day while Apollo and Hyacinthus were practicing throwing the discus Zephyrus the god of the west wind who was also attracted to the young prince and jealous of Apollo's amorous affection towards the boy made the discus veer off course by blowing an ill wind The discus which Apollo had thrown hit Hyacinthus smashing his skull Apollo rushed to him but he was dead The god was overcome with grief but to immortalize the love he had for the beautiful youth he had a flower grow were his blood had stained the earth Apollo also loved the young boy Cyparissus a descendant of Heracles The impassioned Apollo gave Cyparissus a sacred deer as a love token The young deer became tame and was the constant companion of the boy until a tragic accident occurred n nAs the young deer lay sleeping in the shade of the undergrowth Cyparissus threw his javelin which by chance hit and killed the deer Grief-stricken by what had happened Cyparissus wanted to die He asked Apollo to let his tears fall for all eternity With apprehension Apollo transformed the boy into a tree the cypress which became the symbol of sorrow as the sap on its trunk forms droplets like tears n nApollo could also be ruthless when he was angered The mortal Niobe boasted to Apollo's mother Leto that she had fourteen children (in some versions six or seven) which must make her more superior than Leto who had only bore two Apollo greatly angered by this slew her sons and Artemis killed Niobe's daughters Niobe wept so much that she turned into a pillar of stone Apollo was infuriated when the satyr Marsyas challenged Apollo to music contest After winning the competition Apollo had Marsyas flayed alive for being so presumptuous as to challenge a god n nApollo was worshiped throughout the Greek world at Delphi every four years they held the Pythian Games in his honor He had many epithets including Pythian Apollo (his name at Delphi) Apollo Apotropaeus (Apollo who averts evil) and Apollo Nymphegetes (Apollo who looks after the Nymphs) As the god of shepherds he also had the cult titles Lukeios (from lykos wolf) protecting the flocks from wolfs and Nomius (of pastures belonging to shepherds) Being the god of colonists Apollo influenced his priests at Delphi to give divine guidance as to where the expedition should proceed This was during the height of the colonizing era circa 750-550 BCE Apollo's title was Archigetes (leader of colonists) n nAccording to one legend it was Apollo who helped either Cretan or Arcadian colonists found the city of Troy n nIn art Apollo is at most times depicted as a handsome young man clean shaven and carrying either a lyre or his bow and arrows There are many sculptures of Apollo and one of the most famous is the central figure from the west pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia showing Apollo declaring victory in favor of the Lapiths in their struggle against the Centaurs

Good morning Keoshi young Keoshi Kamarge looked up at her smiling mother who stood at the stove holding a pair of chopsticks There was a frying egg smell Mommy was cooking breakfast The 6 year-old rubbed her eyelids yawning I'm hungry Keoshi remarked Kamoki her little brother yawned loudly as he toddled from his room Hungry the 4 year-old expressed shrilly Next came the youngest child 2 and a 12 year-old Kyoko Kyoko babbled in toddler language Their mother smiled again though her face was tired Alright Keoshi Kamoki what would you like she asked I want cereal Keoshi responded climbing up onto a chair around the table Me too Kamoki agreed hoisting himself up onto another seat Kyoko pulled on their mother's apron whining I'll get you some food too Kyoko the mother assured picking up the baby and setting her in a highchair The siblings' mother set out some sliced vegetables on Kyoko's tray and then supplied the other children with their food Footsteps creaked upon the floor and Ryoko Kamarge turned to see her husband Fusashi immerge from the hallway The man trudged into the kitchen his face dull and unsmiling and jade colored eyes far away from his home and the earth Ryoko put on her most gentle kindest face for him as she greeted him Hello Honey Howare you feeling today their children halted staring intently at their father all except Kyoko who played with her food Fusashi fixed in icy stare at Ryoko as he sunk down into one of the last seats despair and sour unbelief both in his expression His reply in human words was clear You ask me if I'm okay now With all that's happened His wife pressed her lips Oh that had been a horrible thing to ask of course he would be feeling terrible hopeless How could she expect him to feel different It had only been one year since Risashi died Her brother-in-law her husband's twin brother had been killed last year They had all been crushed and devastated
