Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River approximately 30 kilometers south of the townsite of Jasper and just west of the Icefields Parkway A powerful picturesque waterfall Athabasca Falls is not known so much for the height of the falls (23 meters) as it is known for its force due to the large quantity of water falling into the gorge Even on a cold morning in the fall when river levels tend to be at their lowest copious amounts of water flow over the falls The river 'falls' over a layer of hard quartzite and through the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes The falls are able to be safely viewed and photographed from various viewing platforms and walking trails around the falls Access is from the nearby parking lot which leads off of Highway 93A just northeast of the falls Highway 93A takes off from the nearby Icefields Parkway and crosses the falls on the way north to the town of Jasper White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper Alberta (Wikipedia)

The Hughes H-1 The prettiest plane to fly This plane is (incorrectly) shown in The Aviator Starring Leo DiCaprio I say incorrectly because the H-1 shown in the movie was actually the long winged version which Hughes used two years after his record attempt by flying the plane transcontinental This is the short wing version parked with engine off at Bittorf field in Rock Falls after a 30 minute flight from Chicago O'Hare I used only a compass and actually missed my mark by about 15 miles I had to turn back after discovering that I was approaching the QUAD CITIES XX I followed the Rock back northeast until I found Sterling-rockfalls Bittorf Field and landed without a hitch

Uvs Nuur Basin Mongolia nThe Uvs Nuur Basin sits on the northern edge of the Central Asian steppes bounded on all sides by mountains Though largely arid the basin is dotted with water A large salt lake the Uvs Nuur Lake sits at the center of the basin and several smaller lakes are scattered across the region Rivers the largest of which is the Tes-Khem run from the surrounding mountains into the basin but no rivers flow out of the basin This image shows one of the smaller lakes near the western edge of the basin n nSince little rain falls in the basin the most vibrant green in this image comes from the wetlands that surround rivers flowing into the small lake A web of bright green lines the river that flows in from the west culminating at a broad green delta Other wetlands cluster around rivers on the northeast and southern sides of the lake Possibly the most striking feature of this image the wetlands are an important wildlife habitat Streaks of white running across the desert are likely seasonal streams that flow when snow melts off the mountains in the spring n nFar from a moderating ocean the Uvs Nuur Basin has an extreme climate with temperatures that swing from a low of -72 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter up to 104 degrees in the summer Containing a number of ecosystems in its fresh and salt water lakes deserts mountains grasslands and forests the basin provides an important habitat for a variety of animals ranging from the endangered snow leopard to the white-tailed sea eagle Because of its diversity and the relatively low amount of human impact on the area the basin is a United Nations World Heritage Site n nImage Credit: NASAGSFCMETIERSDACJAROS and the USJapan ASTER Science Team and Jesse Allen
