the hub - of the universe Yet only with the rise to supremacy of the Babylonian kings with Hammurabi toward 2000 BC had its claim to this position become possible Previously the position was occupied by one of the former capitals of the earlier kingdoms Probably the Sumerians made the city of Nippur- honored by them as a central shrine a Sumerian Rome - the center of the universe from about 2300 BC for at that time supremacy was regarded as conditional upon the possession of NippurnnIn addition to the entire kingdom of Babylonia which is schematically portrayed seven unnamed circles are depicted and an accompanying cuneiform text is found on both sides of the tablet The text contains names of countries and cities but on the reverse side is chiefly concerned with a description of the Seven Islands or regions which are depicted in the form of equal triangles (only one of which is entirely intact on the tablet) rising beyond the circle of the Earthly Ocean Some scholars believe that there may have been eight islands originally The tablet further states that these islands are at equal distances of seven miles (from either each other or from the Babylonian world) around the outer periphery of the Earthly Ocean Various legendary beasts are named which were reputed to live in regions beyond the ocean that encircled the Babylonian world A few ancient heroes reached those places and the badly damaged text appears to describe conditions in them The map is really a diagram to show the relation of these places to the world of the BabyloniansnnThe Babylonians knew little about the nature of these seven islands We hear chiefly only of their various degrees of brightness From the text on the tablet and the inscriptions on the chart itself we learn that the first island lay in the southeast the second in the southwest and so on in a clockwise sequencennThe descriptions of the first and second islands are not preserved The third island is where the winged bird ends not his flight ie cannot reach On the forth island the light is brighter than that of sunset or stars: it lay in the northwest and after sunset in summer was practically in semi-obscurity The fifth island due north lay in complete darkness - the Apsu - Chaos whence arose a number of divinities including Tiamat (the sea) and the gods Anu Enlil and Enki (Ea) the later representatives of the tripartite world Now Apsu desired to destroy his offspring but was killed by Enki who looked upon the Apsu as his home Then Tiamat who went forth to revenge Apsu was vanquished in conflict with Sumer Babylon and Assur respectively Now before the struggle Tiamat had created in place of Apsu huge monsters in animal form The late Sumerian ruler Gudea of Lagash (2600 BC) records in his inscriptions seven such monsters in Hammurabi's time (about 2000 BC) the number was eleven The text of the Babylonian cosmos however enumerates eighteen animals but the names of two of them are not known Each of the last two texts named begin with the same three animals: Basmu Mushus and (Laha) mu It appears from these tests that in the course of time new kinds of animals were addednnAll of these animal constellations though not to be confused with our zodiac knowledge which in this form has not been traced beyond about 420 BC may nevertheless be approximately equated with our zodiacal signs among other things and changes however the names have naturally altered in the course of time The chief animals are also shown on some post-Babylonian tablets of an astronomical nature Karl Maasz has therefore made use of these drawings in his reconstruction in which pictures of the so called boundary stones have served as guides According to the drawings of the clay tablet in question the order of the animal constellations run from right to left - from north to west then around to the east The text contains the following full list of animals in the Heavenly Ocean : (1) the adder (Basmu) (2) the red serpent (Mushus)- a typical name for the dragon of Babybn which the god Marduk borrowed from the god Enlil of Nippur this dragon appears as a decoration on the Ishtar Gate of Babylon He is of special interest because the four animal elements which compose him are borrowed from the neighboring animal constellations: the front legs from the lion standing before him the back legs from the raven or eagle standing behind him the scorpion's sting on his tail from the scorpion next to him here The dragon himself represents in principle a serpent - the hydra (3) the Lahamu a serpent with the front feet of a lion also reminiscent in this respect here of its neighbor the lion (the hydra) (4) the gazelle (5) the bull (in the late Sumerian period a wild bull) (6) the panther (7) the ram (8) unknown (9) the lion (the constellation Leo) (10) the jackal (the constellation Cassiopeia) (11) the stag (the constellation Andromeda) (12) the fowl ( the falcon) (13) unknown (14) the monkey (15) the he-goat also known as the goat-fish (16) the ostrich (probably the crane) (17) the cat (18) an insect possibly the grasshopper The numbers 1-18 correspond to the numbers on the illustration except that numbers 8 and 13 are not preserved in the text of the clay tabletnnThese divine animal constellations which dwell in the Heavenly Ocean are there named the departed gods (in another cuneiform document they are referred to as the gods of the night and the goddesses of the night) because they were derived from the earlier vanished gods of the Sumerians which as the result of a reform in prehistoric times were deposed and replaced by human gods The Epic of Creation is the acknowledgment of this reformnnAll of this - the Seven Islands the animal constellations and the Heavenly Ocean - encircle the primary focus of the tablet the world map The earth proper again is displayed as a circular disc Enclosed by the circle of the Earthly Ocean lies an oblong marked Babylon with two parallel lines running to it from mountains at the edge of the enclosure and running on to a marsh which is identified by two parallel lines near the bottom of the circle The marsh can be identified as the swamp of lower present-day Iraq its identity secured by the name Bit Yakin at its left end the so called Sea Country and known to be a tribal territory covering marshland A trumpet-shaped arm of the ocean curves around the right end of the marsh so that its neck touches the lines from Babylon Despite the absence of a name it is clear that the parallel lines running to and from Babylon represent the river Euphrates To the right of Babylon an oval marks Assyria and above it is apparently Urartu eastern Turkey and Armenia Several other cities are marked by small circles one near the trumpet-shaped sea named Fort of the god is probably Der Badrah at the foot of the Zagros Mountains The name Khabban to the upper left appears to denote an area of Elam southeast of the Zagros geographically out of place (it might also be another town of the same name otherwise unknown) At the top in the north are the mountains whence the Euphrates descends in a southeasterly direction In the center lies Babylon - the hub of the universe Encircling the earth is the Earthly Ocean entitled the Bitter River creating a gulf (the Persian Gulf of today) it flows across the earth as far as the Euphrates To the southwest is shown the land of Habban For the rest the map gives various nameless places indicated only by blank ovals It is oriented towards the northwest From other Babylonian sources it can be learned that for the Babylonians the Bitter River or Earthly Ocean was enclosed by a double range of mountains those to the east and west - the sunrise and sunset range respectively being specially mentionednObviously this is not so much a topographical map as it is an attempt to illustrate ideas expressed in the accompanying text greatest attention being paid to the remote regions The Babylonians evidently viewed the earth as flat in common with other ancient peoples Their references to the four comers relate to the directions of the winds and should not be taken as implying that they thought it was squarennIn summary the Babylonian cosmos comprises a world map executed in cartographic manner a contour sketch of the Seven Islands complete with descriptive text and finally a descriptive text (only) of the Heavenly Ocean and its animal constellations

Ares is the great Olympian God of War Battlelust Civil Order and Manly Courage Ares who became the Greek god of war had a miserable childhood The only son of the mighty Zeus ruler of the Olympians and his wife Hera Ares was disliked by his father from the moment he was born and was barely tolerated from then on Perhaps Zeus just couldn't warm up to the little guy because he hadn't had a part in Ares' conception or his birth Hera with the help of a magical herb had managed to get herself pregnant with the help of Zeus or any man a process called parthenogenesis (Note: Most myths name Ares as the son who was born as a result of this immaculate conception but in some versions the son was Hephaestus)Hera had done this to even the score with her husband for having given birth to Dionysus by himself A short version of that story: Semele one of Zeus' many lovers lay dying while pregnant with Zeus' son Dionysus With the help of Hermes Zeus removed the unborn child and implanted him under the skin of his thigh where he remained until he was ready to be born For whatever reason Zeus failed to bond with his infant son Ares Zeus was not even particularly concerned when the young boy went missing a few years later and didn't expend much effort looking for the poor lad As it turns out the young Ares had been abducted by two playmates the giant Aloadai twins who had caught him and locked him in a bronze jar Ares stayed captive in the bronze jar almost losing his mind in captivity until the stepmother of the unruly twins figured out what had happened and told Zeus' assistant Hermes who was able to release Ares from the jarAfter this incident Hera decided that Ares' might be better off living somewhere else and arranged for him to live with Priapus one of the minor deities Priapus trained the young Ares in the art of dancing and later in the martial artsEven though he was well-trained and served as the god of war Ares wasn't a great fighter and lost many of his battles especially those involving his half-sister and arch-enemy Athena who was the goddess of wisdom as well as the goddess of war (not to mention being Daddy's favorite) Ares represented war conducted up close and personal hand to hand combat and the frenzy of battle and bloodlust Athena and Zeus superbly rational favored war at a distance strategic planning playing according to the rules of the game cold and calculating by comparison Ares style was instinctual passionate and primitivenot destined to make him appear heroic in the eyes of a culture that valued reason and moderation There were other reasons as well: The Greek god Ares the god least favored by the citizens of Greece and by his parents (Zeus and his wife Hera) was seen by the ancient Greeks as a mercenary warrior filled with a bloodlust that could not be appeased and a fickle god as well one who would fight for either side just to have a chance to vent his rage Ares' unpopularity was probably inevitable given that the Greeks of that time were mostly involved in petty wars amongst themselves wars where allegiances were unclear and shifted frequently Any god of war would have found it very difficult to please everyone in that situationIt's easy to see why Ares' other incarnation as Mars the Roman God of War fared much better -- the Roman viewpoint was no doubt influenced by the fact that Rome was usually at war with foreign powers so that a god of war could be someone that could be worshipped and viewed as heroic one always battling for a just cause (ie their side) During the Trojan War Ares fought on the side of the Trojans against the Greeks as a show of support for his lover Aphrodite who had set the war in motion This did not win him any points with the other Olympians who except for Apollo supported the Greeks He charged at Athena who was taunting him about it and she calmly reached down and picked up a rock and smashed him over the head with it stopping his advanceAthena also convinced one of the Greek warriors to wound Ares in the side during the battle and Ares bellowed so loudly in pain and rage that the earth shook He complained to Zeus about Athena's humiliating him on the battlefield and Zeus dismissively called him a whine who enjoyed nothing but brawling Ares rarely went out of his way to come to the aid of his fellow Olympians But once bored with the endless petty wars of the Greeks he decided to rescue Hades who was being held captive by King Sisyphus Ares came to his assistance threatening to decapitate Sisyphus if he didnt release him and turn himself in as Hades prisoner Trembling with fear Sisyphus surrendered to HadesAres may not have matched the Olympian ideal of rationality and moderation but he was not without his followers Unfortunately they were mostly a band of malevolent minor deities and mortals including several of his sons most of whom ended with unhappy fates Ares usually rode into battle accompanied by his two sons Phobos (Fear) and Daiemos (Panic) Although the Greek god Ares was heavily criticized for reacting emotionally rather than rationally and for not always following the rules he was quick to jump to the defense of those with whom he felt a kinship including his large brood of offspring Unfortunately his feelings often propelled him into battles that he could not winWhen one of his sons was killed during the Trojan War Ares leapt onto the battlefield defying Zeus' orders that the gods and goddesses not take part in the battleAnd Ares felt strongly about his daughters as well When his daughter Alcippe was raped by one of Poseidon's sons Ares promptly killed him This lead to the first murder trial in recorded history The trial was held on a hill in Athens that was subsequently named the Aeropagus (Ares' Hill) Ares was acquitted of the crimeSometimes Ares' loyalties led him astray One of his sons Cycnus was a thief who fell upon travelers murdering them for their bones which he was using to construct a gruesome temple to his father Cycnus picked the wrong victim when he tried to assault Heracles (Hercules) As they fought Areas rushed to fight on his son's side but they were no march for Heracles who killed Cycnus and wounded AresLittle is written about Ares in his aspect as Lord of the Dance but much can be inferred Just as in many tribal cultures warriors drum and dance before doing battle the passion and intensity of the ecstatic dance the sheer physicality of it is closely associated with the masculine energy the forceful and aggressive impulse that can bring courage in its wake And no one every doubted that Ares had courageBut what of his loves Ares never married although he had over twenty lovers who bore him children And apparently his love affairs weren't overnighters but were long lasting relationships because many of them bore him several children Being deceptive or even indirect could not be listed among his shortcomings Unlike the other Greek gods Ares did not rely on claw that begins on his scalp and stretch down over his face He was first hired by Adam O'Dell to take out the Harvesterand he even managed to wing Stan in the armAfter the showdown in wich the Harvester wins the Harvester offers triple the price that O'Dell paid Bear Bones if he will instead work for himand be his background man in all his campaigns who hides in the shadows and covers himBear Bones agrees thoguh he doesn't realize that Stan is actually paying him with his orginal boss's money n Eventually Bear Bones learns to respect the Harvesterand they form a friendship of sort that exists beyond their businessagreement Bear Bones respects the Harvester for being 'the onlyreal manin his whole damned country' at some pointwhen the Harvester pays him for the months Bear Bones states this money should be good for a least a year indicating that he's now working for the Harvester more for the honor of serving with someone he respects than for the monetary arrangement Bear Bones finally learns the HArvester's true identity but he doesn't let Stan know and he keeps it to himself n nLOVE INTEREST--- Michael's beautiful wife Johana is the only other person who knows the truthShe is a country girl who was never part of the 'family' business She supported and encouraged Michael's crusadeand when he was killedshe onlywas the only onewho counseled and challenged Stan on the evil ways of his fatherStan and Johana's relationship is a tricky onethey are probably in loveand he is very protective of her sinceshe was his brother's wifeand he is responisible for his deathHe feels tremendous guilt for thisbut she has forgiven him and now is now is spiritual advisor and only true confident They love one from from a distanceand it is an unspoken understanding between them that it is to dangerous to act upon their closeness in fear that O'Dell woudl use it as leverage if he ever uncovered the truth n nANIMAL--- A half-wolf half- German Shepard named Viper Michael raised the dog as the Harvester Stan inherited the dog after his brother's death Viper was reluctant to help Stan until he first emerged in his brother's old costume Now Viper is completely loyaland he aids the HArvester in his missions by frequently going in for specifically trained kills nBare Bone is animal is a Polar bear which he rescused when it was a cub and raised as a pet and now aids him and is completley loyal to his master
