For this I copied the iris and made several duplications of it on the screen layer Then I used a color layer for teal along with some overlay layers For around the eye I used a small brush with lots of scattering and spacing and used Outer Glow to it a little bit of a dustyglow look For her mouth i used red and used plastic wrap I had 3 layers of them soft light multiply and overlay I have teal on soft light layer right under her eye to reduce the dark circle I had used Render and put a camera flash on the eye to give it a glow I have teal on multiply surrounding the face and another layer that has a gradient of various blues and a black in it which is on a soft light layer I used a brush similar to the one I used around the eyes but bigger and used outer glow on it so it helps the picture look a little magical At the end I put a random pink blob on the left side of the picture and put it on a color layer which gives the bluepink effect on the face instead of the sickly green

If Scorpius looked this good to the unaided eye humans might remember it better Scorpius more typically appears as a few bright stars in a well known but rarely pointed out zodiacal constellation To get a spectacular image like this though one needs a good camera color filters and a digital image processor To bring out detail the above image not only involved long duration exposures taken in several colors but one exposure in a very specific red color emitted by hydrogen that brings out great detail The resulting image shows many breathtaking features Vertically across the image left is part of the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy Visible there are vast clouds of bright stars and long filaments of dark dust Jutting out diagonally from the Milky Way in the image center are dark dust bands known as the Dark River This river connects to several bright stars on the right that are part of Scorpius' head and claws and include the bright star Antares Above and right of Antares is an even brighter planet Jupiter Numerous red emission nebulas and blue reflection nebulas are visible throughout the image Scorpius appears prominently in southern skies after sunset during the middle of the year

I am fortunate to own some very fine stateoftheart equipment to aid in my pursuit of astronomy and astrophotography Pictured here is my imaging setup The mount is the affordable but highly capable ATLAS EQG mount from Orion This German Equatorial mount shows an astonishing level of performance for it's price range Although rated for about 40 lbs load capacity I've seen others put upwards of 60 or 70 lbs of equipment on these mounts and still be able to get good tracking and astrophotographic performance I hook it up to a laptop and control it via a planetarium program called Cartes du Ciel The big refractor the APM 130780 LW is my dream scope It is a 51 inch world class triplet apochromatic scope and sports an LZOS crafted Thomas M Back designed triplet objective of uncompromising performance It is a treat to use this scope under dark skies and shows razor sharp images There is absolutely zero false color on bright objects such as the planets Luna and stars like Vega and Sirius The small refractor riding on top of this big one is a Takahashi FS60C doublet fluorite apo This tiny little 60mm scope sports some very impressive worl class optics from Japan's finest manufacturers of astronomical telescopes It's amazing how much detail can be seen on solar system and deepsky objects with this tiny scope Although I use it for guidescope duty primarily I have used it to take widefield images and it doesn't disappoint I have a generic 50mm blue Meade finderscope for object finding and centering I also have a couple of dedicated astronomical CCD cameras for astrophotography Shown in the image attached to the main refractor with it's distinctive red body is my ATIK 16HR monochrome CCD camera Sporting a Sony 12 ICX285AL chip and efficient thermoelectric cooling this camera captures high resolution low noise images and has good sensitivity across the range from near UV to nearIR It actually has excellent quantum efficiency at Halpha of approximately 55 I also have a Meade DSI Pro which I use primary as my guide camera I've installed a thermoelectric cooling element to the back of the camera which is shown in this image attached to the small scope and it greatly helps control dark current

Natal MicrocosmIn the quest to better understand the birth of stars and the formation of new worlds astronomers have used NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to examine the massive stars contained in a cloudy region called Sharpless 140 This cloud is a starforming microcosm that exhibits within a relatively small area all of the classic manifestations of stellar birth Sharpless 140 lies almost 3000 lightyears from Earth in the constellation Cepheus At its heart is a cluster of three deeply embedded young stars which are each several thousand times brighter than the sun Though they are strikingly visible in this image from Spitzer's infrared array camera they are completely obscured in visible light buried within the core of the surrounding dust cloud The extreme youth of at least one of these stars is indicated by the presence of a stream of gas moving at high velocities Such outflows are signatures of the processes surrounding a star that is still gobbling up material as part of its formation The bright red bowl or arc seen in this image traces the outer surface of the dense dust cloud encasing the young stars This arc is made up primarily of organic compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which glow on the surface of the cloud Ultraviolet light from a nearby bright star outside of the image is eating away at these molecules Eventually this light will destroy the dust envelope and the masked young stars will emerge This falsecolor image was taken on Oct 11 2003 Image credit NASAJPLCaltech httpwwwnasagovmultimediaimagegalleryimagefeature699html

6142009 We'd planned to go out to eat on Saturday night and bring the cake and ice cream to the little Mexican Restaurant near our apartment but it seems that plan changed and we ended up celebrating the day with Sarah on an outing even though it was too hot for the zoo eating under a shade tree by the fountain smelling the sweet magnolias in bloom at George Hermann Memorial Park We got a pretty reasonable lunch that we had ample leftovers to bring home to James at the hospital cafeteria for around 1000 and tried to enjoy the day just sightseeing indoors and out in the shade when it wasn't too hot We had the cake which James picked up on Saturday the following Sunday afternoon at Ava's apartment They have their birthdays one day apart and we just decided not to feel pressed or to press anyone to spend a lot of money because we would have to get things for Sarah later and I just didn't think that spurofthemoment purchases were a good thing She needed socks but I didn't want anyone to be obligated The point of the day was to have a good time and to enjoy each other's company to relax and to have cake and ice cream to sit and talk and to rest They also go the opportunity to watch how much Sarah has grown and how she tried to take the chair and push it to walk and how she was trying to talk and to push herself up on her hands to stand erect She's trying very hard and that is worth it for her birthday We can always get her toys and clothes and things that she needs as she is growing I still brought Sarah's red cup with the lid and about 4 cans of Dr Pepper I opened one and left it in the fridge because we had to leave in a hurry but Sarah and I would have something to drink in case there was no soda there Sarah tried to get into Paul's beer a couple of times but we stopped her This is Sarah commandeering Ava's chair when she got up I had to move the camera fast here because I almost caught Ava's backside LLO'C

My first encounter with this incredible structure was back in 1984 when Iwas stationed at Ft Ord near Monterey CaliforniaEach year around the third week of November they light the Pigeon PointLighthouse and let the 24 main beams remain still for about 5 minutes sophotographers can take long exposure pictures of the lighthouse Afterwards the beams begin to rotate so that to a distant ship they will see one flash every 10 seconds I have been to this event several times since learning about it a number of years ago Each year is different and more and more photographers show up If you plan to shoot this event I recommend you bring the following A heavy duty tripod due to the wind and long exposure required Remote control cable release or infrared if your camera supportsit You can use the time if you don't have one Better lenses tend to take less time to capture the image Lunch and Dinner so you can arrive early and stake out your realestate for the optimal shot Warm clothing We even bring chairs and blankets A red flashlight so not to disrupt yours and other photographersnight vision Nothing will upset another photographer like hitting themsquare in the face with a 5 cell Mag light A donation to restore this spectacular lighthouse which wasdamaged in 2001This shot was taken from the recently built platform that extends to thesouth side of the lighthouse There is also a new path down to the beachthat wasn't there last year If the tide is out this year it might be abetter position because you could get the reflection of the beams in thewater I'll have to arrive early and check out the conditionsIn 1853 the Clipper Ship Carrier Pigeon ran aground on rocks off the coastand sank After several other ships followed suit it was decided to buildthe lighthouse was finished and lit for the first time on November 15th1872 This event is celebrated each year with the lighting of the mainlens During the rest of the year curtains block the view of the lensAn electric light maintained by the Coast Guard replaces the main lens Myfirst encounter with this incredible structure was back in 1884 when I wasstationed at Ft Ord near Monterey California I took my wife and kids ona tour to the top of the lighthouse which provided a spectacular viewIn December of 2001 a large chunk of metal and concrete came tumbling to theground This effectively closed the lighthouse to the public and tours tothe top are restricted to special guest Pigeon Point Lighthouse now belongsto the State Park system and since the damage they have been attempting toraise the millions of dollars necessary to restore the lighthouseCurrently metal cables have been secured to the top of the lighthouse and achain link fence surrounds the lighthouse The cables have started rustingand caused long orange streaks of rust to run down the side of the normallyall white structure It effectively ruins many daytime photographs So ifyou can bring a few dollars to donate it is greatly appreciated by all usphotographers If you cannot make it to the lighthouse but would like tohelp please visit the official site atwwwcalparksorgprogramsresourcespigeonpointhtmlCheers DarvLiquidMoonlightcom Darvin Atkeson

had invented a fresh creation or reinvented it as only those who know the passionate beating heart of life could understand it And the keepers of that heart's pulsing rhythm were the music grates the icons Jimi Hendrix the Rolling Stones the Doors Led Zeppelin Eric Clapton Ron Raffaelli spent magical days and nights in the company of these legends photographing them for the album covers and posters that proclaimed their faces and their music to the young people of the world As a friend he caught the performers in their private moments of play and doubt He also immortalized their very public triumphs those electrifying nights when they were carried away on the roar of thousands of fans As Raffaelli became more and more a part of this whitehot inner circle he found that he was profoundly changed It all started with a bizarre interview A 22yearold recent graduate of the Art Center College of Design Raffaelli was summoned to a Beverly Hills estate to interview for a photography job with a musician he had never heard of The photographer was ushered into a darkened bedroom where through the smoky light he saw a figure seated on the floor The form washed in crimson light by a dim red light bulb draped with iridescent scarves was Jimi Hendrix He motioned for Raffaelli's portfolio Without a word he paged for a scant few seconds through Raffaelli's work then handed back the book Driving back to the studio Raffaelli dismissed the experience as a waste of time But a couple of weeks later Hendrix's tour manager called and told him to catch the next flight to Hawaii Jimi had chosen Raffaelli as his personal photographer and the star would begin his first American tour in Honolulu In 1968 Hendrix was a virtual unknown in this country after completing his unprecedented musical conquest of Great Britain As the musician and the photographer became close one night Hendrix told Raffaelli that they had also been friends in past lives Jimi advised his friends to use his camera lens as a brush painting the world around him the way he saw it Mr Raffaelli is now an Internationally known and respected graphic artist Raffaelli has had six books published in addition to hundreds of magazine layouts and covers He is still an active professional artist and photographer In October of 1968 I took a long limousine ride from Hollywood to Bakersfield with Jimi Noel and Mitch That nights concert was to be held at the Bakersfield Civic Auditorium The sound crew arrived early that afternoon and set up the stage for that evenings performance We arrived about thirty minutes before show time and the concert began right on time at 8 PM sharp This photo was taken just after Jimi had finished playing his opening song The Star Spangled Banner The stage was surrounded by local police and auditorium security Hendrix had a reputation for giving an explosive performance and the authorities were afraid of audience out of control That evenings performance was spectacular and as the concert neared its end the audience were out of their seats and cheering As I had seen Jimi do so many times before at the end of his last song he turned around and was about to punch the neck of his guitar through a live amplified speaker to create his famous electronic distortion that always ended his performance Just as Jimi was about to do this the power was cut and the stage went totally dark For Jimi this was like having sex without a climax I followed Jimi backstage to the office of the auditorium's manager His name was Richard and he admitted that he had cut the power because he was afraid that Jimi and the audience might damage the stage Jimi went ballistic and reached across the desk and pulled this 4' 6 manager off his feet over the top of his desk and began to hake him violently I stepped in and pulled them apart telling Jimi that it was not worth getting arrested because of this idiot Richard then took a swing at me and I pushed him onto the ground just as the police entered the room We were both arrested and taken to the police station Jimi demanded his legal right to a phone call the police officer said Oh you want to call your attorney Jimi said No I want to call the press and I have only one thing to say RIOT Immediately we were put into our limousine and driven out of town with a police escort MOBIUS This catagory of structures found in my facial lesioni call a plant shoot Many grow upwards in rectangular and vertical segments from the lesion depthsThey have a front and back that begins as clear and becomes covered in a brownish skin The seqments are divided by a crystaline appearing gravel both the right and left edge are like a rim The top expells fibers many crystals and a clear film as it grows upwards The edge has positions of other stuctures growing some that branch out and have a leading edge similar to the main stock This one pictured at 200x on my tv screen is in the first stages of development Fibers in the lesion extend towards it The midway red dot in the stems gravel is what will soon grow red buds and blossoms from the stem I am reflected in the tv screen on the left side of the picturediminished by adding tint to bring out details I am actually 3 feet in front of the tv proscope tv microscope in one hand balanced on lesion sample in clear tape and digital camera in the other hand The den windows reflect the sun coming up on another day of dealing with this mystery of morgellons Calcium carbonate structures erupt calling out to bryozoan larvaeParty I sayparty's overClick on photo for a high five to that
