TITLE Babylonian World MapDATE 600500 BCAUTHOR unknownDESCRIPTION This later Babylonian clay tablet dating from the Persian Period early 5th century BC shows an asysocentic view of a flat round world with Babylonia in the center Its identity as a map attempting to depict the entire world is proved by the adjacent text which mentions seven outer regions beyond the encircling ocean This is a slightly different concept from that of the early Greeks for whom the encircling ocean was outside of all known landsAt this time Babylon was still a flourishing city regarded as the center the hub of the universe Yet only with the rise to supremacy of the Babylonian kings with Hammurabi toward 2000 BC had its claim to this position become possible Previously the position was occupied by one of the former capitals of the earlier kingdoms Probably the Sumerians made the city of Nippur honored by them as a central shrine a Sumerian Rome the center of the universe from about 2300 BC for at that time supremacy was regarded as conditional upon the possession of NippurIn addition to the entire kingdom of Babylonia which is schematically portrayed seven unnamed circles are depicted and an accompanying cuneiform text is found on both sides of the tablet The text contains names of countries and cities but on the reverse side is chiefly concerned with a description of the Seven Islands or regions which are depicted in the form of equal triangles only one of which is entirely intact on the tablet rising beyond the circle of the Earthly Ocean Some scholars believe that there may have been eight islands originally The tablet further states that these islands are at equal distances of seven miles from either each other or from the Babylonian world around the outer periphery of the Earthly Ocean Various legendary beasts are named which were reputed to live in regions beyond the ocean that encircled the Babylonian world A few ancient heroes reached those places and the badly damaged text appears to describe conditions in them The map is really a diagram to show the relation of these places to the world of the BabyloniansThe Babylonians knew little about the nature of these seven islands We hear chiefly only of their various degrees of brightness From the text on the tablet and the inscriptions on the chart itself we learn that the first island lay in the southeast the second in the southwest and so on in a clockwise sequenceThe descriptions of the first and second islands are not preserved The third island is where the winged bird ends not his flight ie cannot reach On the forth island the light is brighter than that of sunset or stars it lay in the northwest and after sunset in summer was practically in semiobscurity The fifth island due north lay in complete darkness a land where one sees nothing and the sun is not visible The Sumerians and Babylonians probably had some knowledge possibly acquired from other people of the northern high latitudes and of the polar nights Highly remarkable is the sixth island where a horned bull dwells and attacks the newcomer An exactly similar presentation true to tradition occurs in the same position in an astrolabe of the 17th century AD and has been used in the reconstruction of the tablet The seventh island lay in the east and is thus described where the morning dawns meaning that it faces the sunrise Again the islands are all seven miles distant from the earth but the distance between them varies being sometimes six sometimes nine miles The description of two of these islands however has not survivedAccording to Babylonian ideas the islands said to lie between the Earthly and the Heavenly Oceans connected the heavens and the earth These islands form bridges to the Heavenly Ocean wherein are the various animal constellations 18 of which are mentioned by nameThus round the heavens flowed the Heavenly Ocean corresponding to the Earthly Ocean on the earth And in the Heavenly Ocean were animal constellations the vanished gods These probably recur in the expression belt of heaven the Sumerian for which may be literally translated divine animals As the animal constellations also sank below the horizon so the Heavenly Ocean extended beneath the earth so that plenty of room existed below the Underworld for the passage of the sun moon and planets After the overthrow of the old world order of Apsu and Tiamat or Chaos the former gods according to the Babylonian Epic of Creation were deposed and banned as animals to the Heavenly Ocean by command of the creator of the new worldIn the beginning everything was ocean the Apsu Chaos whence arose a number of divinities including Tiamat the sea and the gods Anu Enlil and Enki Ea the later representatives of the tripartite world Now Apsu desired to destroy his offspring but was killed by Enki who looked upon the Apsu as his home Then Tiamat who went forth to revenge Apsu was vanquished in conflict with Sumer Babylon and Assur respectively Now before the struggle Tiamat had created in place of Apsu huge monsters in animal form The late Sumerian ruler Gudea of Lagash 2600 BC records in his inscriptions seven such monsters in Hammurabi's time about 2000 BC the number was eleven The text of the Babylonian cosmos however enumerates eighteen animals but the names of two of them are not known Each of the last two texts named begin with the same three animals Basmu Mushus and Laha mu It appears from these tests that in the course of time new kinds of animals were addedAll of these animal constellations though not to be confused with our zodiac knowledge which in this form has not been traced beyond about 420 BC may nevertheless be approximately equated with our zodiacal signs among other things and changes however the names have naturally altered in the course of time The chief animals are also shown on some postBabylonian tablets of an astronomical nature Karl Maasz has therefore made use of these drawings in his reconstruction in which pictures of the so called boundary stones have served as guides According to the drawings of the clay tablet in question the order of the animal constellations run from right to left from north to west then around to the east The text contains the following full list of animals in the Heavenly Ocean 1 the adder Basmu 2 the red serpent Mushus a typical name for the dragon of Babybn which the god Marduk borrowed from the god Enlil of Nippur this dragon appears as a decoration on the Ishtar Gate of Babylon He is of special interest because the four animal elements which compose him are borrowed from the neighboring animal constellations the front legs from the lion standing before him the back legs from the raven or eagle standing behind him the scorpion's sting on his tail from the scorpion next to him here The dragon himself represents in principle a serpent the hydra 3 the Lahamu a serpent with the front feet of a lion also reminiscent in this respect here of its neighbor the lion the hydra 4 the gazelle 5 the bull in the late Sumerian period a wild bull 6 the panther 7 the ram 8 unknown 9 the lion the constellation Leo 10 the jackal the constellation Cassiopeia 11 the stag the constellation Andromeda 12 the fowl the falcon 13 unknown 14 the monkey 15 the hegoat also known as the goatfish 16 the ostrich probably the crane 17 the cat 18 an insect possibly the grasshopper The numbers 118 correspond to the numbers on the illustration except that numbers 8 and 13 are not preserved in the text of the clay tabletThese divine animal constellations which dwell in the Heavenly Ocean are there named the departed gods in another cuneiform document they are referred to as the gods of the night and the goddesses of the night because they were derived from the earlier vanished gods of the Sumerians which as the result of a reform in prehistoric times were deposed and replaced by human gods The Epic of Creation is the acknowledgment of this reformAll of this the Seven Islands the animal constellations and the Heavenly Ocean encircle the primary focus of the tablet the world map The earth proper again is displayed as a circular disc Enclosed by the circle of the Earthly Ocean lies an oblong marked Babylon with two parallel lines running to it from mountains at the edge of the enclosure and running on to a marsh which is identified by two parallel lines near the bottom of the circle The marsh can be identified as the swamp of lower presentday Iraq its identity secured by the name Bit Yakin at its left end the so called Sea Country and known to be a tribal territory covering marshland A trumpetshaped arm of the ocean curves around the right end of the marsh so that its neck touches the lines from Babylon Despite the absence of a name it is clear that the parallel lines running to and from Babylon represent the river Euphrates To the right of Babylon an oval marks Assyria and above it is apparently Urartu eastern Turkey and Armenia Several other cities are marked by small circles one near the trumpetshaped sea named Fort of the god is probably Der Badrah at the foot of the Zagros Mountains The name Khabban to the upper left appears to denote an area of Elam southeast of the Zagros geographically out of place it might also be another town of the same name otherwise unknown At the top in the through the security apparatus such as the NKVD Millions of people were killed through famines executions deportations and in the Gulag Nikita Khrushchev Stalin's henchman and eventual successor denounced Stalin's rule and the cult of personality in 1956 initiating the process of deStalinization which later became part of the SinoSoviet Split Number of victims Early researchers of the number killed by Stalin's regime were forced to rely largely upon anecdotal evidence and their estimates range from a low of 3 million to as high as 60 million1525 But with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 evidence from the Soviet archives finally became available The government archives record that about 800000 prisoners were executed for either political or criminal offences under Stalin while another 17 million died of privationcitation needed or other causes in the Gulags and some 389000 perished during kulak resettlement a total of about 3 million victims Debate continues however16 since some historians believe the archival figures to be unreliable26 Also it is generally agreed that the data are incomplete since some categories of victim were carelessly recorded by the Soviets such as the victims of ethnic deportations or of German population transfer in the aftermath of WWII Thus while some archival researchers have posited the number of victims of Stalin's repressions to be no more than about 4 million in total 171819 others believe the number to be considerably higher Russian writer Vadim Erlikman27 for example has made the following estimations Executions 15 million Gulag 5 million Deportations 17 million out of 75 million deported and POW's and German civilians 1 million for a total of about 9 million victims of repression Some have also included the 6 to 8 million victims of the 193233 famine202829 In this case historians differ as to whether the famine was deliberate as part of the campaign of repression against kulaks or simply an unintended consequence of the struggle over forced collectivization See also Holodomor Regardless it appears that a minimum of around 10 million surplus deaths 4 million by repression and 6 million from famine are attributable to the regime with a number of recent books suggesting a probable figure of somewhere between 15 to 20 million Adding 68 million famine victims to Erlikman's estimates above for example would yield a figure of between 15 and 17 million victims Pioneering researcher Robert Conquest30 meanwhile has revised his original estimate of up to 30 million victims down to 20 million Others however continue to maintain that their earlier much higher estimates are correct31 On March 1 1953 after an allnight dinner with interior minister Lavrenty Beria and future premiers Georgi Malenkov Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev Stalin did not emerge from his room the next day having probably suffered a stroke that paralyzed the right side of his body Although his guards thought it odd that he did not rise at his usual time the next day they were under orders not to disturb him and he was not discovered until that evening He died four days later on March 5 1953 at the age of 74 and was buried on March 9 His daughter Svetlana recalls the scene as she stood by his death bed He suddenly opened his eyes and cast a glance over everyone in the room It was a terrible glance Then something incomprehensible and awesome happened He suddenly lifted his left hand as though he were pointing to something above and bringing down a curse upon all of us The next moment after a final effort the spirit wrenched its self free of the flesh Officially the cause of death was listed as a cerebral hemorrhage His body was preserved in Lenin's Mausoleum until October 31 1961 when his body was removed from the Mausoleum and buried next to the Kremlin walls as part of the process of deStalinization It has been suggested that Stalin was assassinated The exCommunist exile Avtorkhanov argued this point as early as 1975 The political memoirs of Vyacheslav Molotov published in 1993 claimed that Beria had boasted to Molotov that he poisoned Stalin I took him out Khrushchev wrote in his memoirs that Beria had immediately after the stroke gone about spewing hatred against Stalin and mocking him and then when Stalin showed signs of consciousness dropped to his knees and kissed his hand When Stalin fell unconscious again Beria immediately stood and spat In 2003 a joint group of Russian and American historians announced their view that Stalin ingested warfarin a powerful rat poison that inhibits coagulation of the blood and so predisposes the victim to hemorrhagic stroke cerebral hemorrhage Since it is flavorless warfarin is a plausible weapon of murder The facts surrounding Stalin's death will probably never be known with certainty39 His demise arrived at a convenient time for Beria and others who feared being swept away in yet another purge It is believed that Stalin felt Beria's power was too great and threatened his own Whether or not Beria or another usurper was directly responsible for his death it is true that the politburo did not summon medical attention for Stalin for more than a day after he was found Under Stalin's rule the Soviet Union was transformed from an agricultural nation into a global superpower at the cost of millions of lives The USSR's industrialization was successful in that the country was able to defend against and eventually defeat the Axis invasion in World War II though at an enormous cost in human life and in 1957 four years after Stalin's death to put into orbit the first ever artificial satellite Sputnik 1 However historian Robert Conquest and other Westerners claim that the USSR was bound for industrialization and that its speed along this course was not necessarily improved by Bolshevik influence It has also been argued that Stalin was partially responsible for the initial military disasters and enormous human causalities during WWII because Stalin eliminated many military officers during the purges and especially the most senior ones and rejected the massive amounts of intelligence warning of the German attack24 While Stalin's social and economic policies laid the foundations for the USSR's emergence as a superpower the harshness with which he conducted Soviet affairs was subsequently repudiated by his successors in the Communist Party leadership notably in the denunciation of Stalinism by Nikita Khrushchev in February 1956 In his Secret Speech On the Personality Cult and its Consequences delivered to a closed session of the 20th Party Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Khrushchev denounced Stalin for his cult of personality and his regime for violation of Leninist This is a closeup that captures some of the areas hidden from the first closeup As you can see it's taken from the right side The new areas are labeled in Green 7 Middle Window 2B 3B analogous areas to areas 2 and 3opposite side of protruding portion of the building The Blue Circle in the picture is the general area of all the ad space allocated to the hakwon on the front face of the building I was thinking maybe having something big across this whole area may be more effective advertisement as the whole face of the building is so cluttered with signs etc I just remembered that the one window in the hakwon was left there because else it would be an illegal fire hazard and I think the window is in area 7 or maybe 4 I'm not sure if that area where the Dry cleaning sign is labeled A is allowed to be there cuz it looks like its supposed to by our space The sign labeled B is a competing English hakwon on the 2nd floor that just opened up

There is an interesting story to how I came to be on Fraueninsel a story which shows that to every cloud there is a silver lining The DAAD had provided us with a rail pass five days within a month during which we could travel anywhere in Germany with any highspeed train for free I decided to use my last rail pass day on the romantic Rhein river cruise featuring heaps of castles and the famour Lorelei Berg Unfortunately the train from Koblenz back to Munich was what I will remember as the train from hell It was 2 hours and 41 minutes late In the confusion of the train breakdowns no one bothered to stamp my ticket and I ended up with one extra rail pass day I was going to use this opportunity to travel to Salzburg the following Saturday with three other RISE students but once again things turned out entirely differently from what I had planned The night before Friday was the first day of the famous Isarbruecken festival a gorgeous and impressive celebration commemorating Munich 850's anniversary which took place on the three bridges spanning the Isar river We were supposed to take the opportunity that evening to check out the festival and make arrangements for the trip to Salzburg the next day Incidentally August 1st was also the day I moved to downtown Munich from the outskirts Unterschleissheim and I managed to liberate myself from the hastle of suitcases and rent payment halfanhour after we were all supposed to meet Luckily Pratik and I had arranged to go together and he did wait for me He was quite offended it is reassuring when Pratik is not content that means he still has hope for you someday becoming a responsible person We didn't really manage to catch up to the group but we saw the festival projections on a film of water and I couldn't imagine a more wonderful way to spend the evening The next day I woke up hours after the others had left for Salzburg The morning had passed me by while I was cozily asleep and I was feeling regretful that I had missed the opportunity to travel with people I knew Little did I imagine that this was a chance to discover that travelling alone is one of the greatest gifts and freedoms given to a human being today I would spend almost a month travelling on my own in Germany Netherlands and Norway August 2nd was the last day to take advantage of my fifth rail pass day and the only way I could manage it now was if I picked a short journey stayed at some place close to Munich for three to four hours and came back home at 9 pm I spent about two hours hesitating between attractive destinations and looking up train times before finally settling on Chiemsee the pictures of the second largest lake in Germany looked gorgeous in my guidebook I must say that my journey to Chiemsee was one of the most rich inspiring and vibrant memories of summer 2008 I arrived at Prien am Chiemsee the small and uneventful village near the lake without any particular plan but to see two islands Herreninsel and Fraueninsel As soon as they were off the train people began boarding buses taking them to various places I'd never heard of Unable to decipher the least bit from the signs at the bus stops or the drivers themselves I asked the only two Englishspeaking people I could find for help After only five minutes in their company I was really glad that I had approached Chuck a Europeanlooking man in his fifties and his young daughter Halla As though a positive vibe were about them I could tell that Chuck was a talented creative individual His daughter's kindness quiet reserve and openness to life charmed me Chuck was from Texas and had only been to Germany a few times twice for an academic exchange of a few months Though he had not been here for over decade his knowledge of German was so near to native that I couldn't help but be impressed He was bringing his daughter Halla to take a German course in a tiny village in Beautiful Bavaria He later wrote by email that she loved it Their bus was arriving in an hour and they were glad to walk down to the lake with me in the meantime I was captivated by the warmth and Gastfreundlichkeit guestfriendliness of the local residents when Chuck asked for directions their readiness to offer advice to share stories with laughter Two adorable old ladies spent five minutes deliberating whether Chuck and Halla could make it to the bus stop on time and which path would be best to follow We finally opted for the scenic route the bike path and it ended up being a twenty minute walk down to the lake As we approached the harbour I already liked Chiemsee from the liveliness of its shore the deep blue of its water the majesty of the Alps But my adventure by ferry to Fraueninsel was just beginning as the following photos attempt to tell Walking back to the Hauptbahnof that evening my heart was singing with complete felicity paiting dreams with elegant brushstrokes into the sunset My train ride back to Munich provided further confirmation that coming here had been the right choice Ironically the wagons were filled with people coming back from a day in Salzburg I sat down next to a couple in their late fifties or sixties because they seemed like kindredspirits Before mustering up the courage to talk to them I kept trying to discern what language they were speaking their faces looked familiar to me It turned out that the lady was from Canada and her husband was German from Bayern D They were sitting next to a young man who developed video games in Salzburg featuring illegal migration in Europe from Northern Africa to Southern Spain P The couple told me that Salzburg had been unpleasantly humid stuffed with tourists attracted by the classical music festival I felt all the more glad for my quiet hours by the lake fresh and erholend a German concept evoking repose fulfillment and regeneration The Canadian lady whose name I unfortunately forget though I did ask was humorously hinting at the irresistible advantages of marrying a German man As if I wasn't in love with this culture this land already
