Through Ambers EyesI was born many years ago I started out life wild and free runningthe California mountains and praries without a care in the worldThen one day my herd was rounded up and put in cages our freedomlost We were stuck prodded and branded My family separated Ihave never seen them again The two legged's say I'm 13 years oldthey can tell this by looking at my teeth What's years to a horseThey say I am from the Twin Peaks HMA Whether it was due to my ageor the three stike program or both I was listed as an 'unadoptablemustang' an unwanted horse Also known as a Sale Authority horseI was branded again on my neck and my butt Myself and severalother mares were put in holding facilities we were fed and wateredand were healthy Then one day we were sold to the highest bidderfor 10 each We were rounded up again and loaded up in thetrailers and went on the longest ride yet to a place calledFlorida Myself and 9 other mares were dropped off at this ranchwhere we were chased by two legged on carts with a snake stick withwalmart bag at the end Then a stud was put in with us and leftthere till we were bred The food stopped coming little hay Wewere hungry Others from our trip went to worse home though theywent to rodeo's were beaten and starved Guess we were the luckyonesThen one day we were chased again and three of us caught in asmall corral Another two legged came with a truck and trailer Thethree of us were trapped which one were they after It wasmethey separated us out and then tried to force me into thetrailer with those horrible snakesfinally I took a flying leapinto the panals got my legs caught and fell on my back and side Iwas down Fell twice that day The one human the one that came toget me was angry why was she angry what did I do I got up andstood there snorting breathing heavy the air knocked out of me Thehuman that came to get me started barking chased the one man withthe snake away he went so far away I didn't see him again Theother woman with the other snake too dissapeared behind thetrailerIt was just me and this new human in the corral As Istood there shaking she had a stick an extension of her leg andwith her other paw she pointed to the trailer what did she wantfrom me She faced off with me and slowly started walking toward meswinging her head toward the trailer and looking at it and pointingtelling me I need you to get in that trailer There was noaggression no anger there just a calm persistance urging me to getin that trailer Slowly I inched closer this human kept thepressure on me but it was a gentle pressure so calm so differentFinally I figured out what she wanted after inching closer andlooking back and forth at the trailer and her I hopped in and thedoor swung behind me I was trapped again I started rocking backand forth shaking the whole trailer Hay was pushed through thebars at me fresh hay smelled so good But I wasnt' going to eathad to keep an eye on those two legged what were they up to nowThen began another long trip we got to this barn the dooropened and there stood two humans looked identical and two youngones All looking at me I didn't want to get out of the trailerThe mare that was with me was unloaded from the front of thetrailerFinally the smell of fresh hay and water was more then Icould handle I jumped off and checked out my new corral There wereother horses an old one a young colt and a young burro It was soodd they treated these humans as if they were part of the herdtouching them and nuzzling them I just stood and watched Then Iheard more horses calling and the ones with me calling back wherewas I The humans left me for the night and I rested Iparticuarliy liked the little colt The sun rose and out came thehumans they stood their watching me and put some sweet smellingstuff on my hay it was so good They named me Amber That nameseemed so appropriate I took to it right away better then beingcalled 4572 After about a week I was moved to a slightly biggercorral Here my human sat with me with a bucket of feed that wasgood stuffI just couldn't bring myself to get closer to hereventually I did that smell was more then I could handle Then sheheld it and dropped her head so I reached in fast and took a mouthfull she never tried to lash out to grab me I ateforgot whereI was at she moved I jumped back did she try to grab me Nojust scratching her nose what an odd human Another several dayspassed my human opened up the gate and pointed told me I was freeto roam I didn't understand I remembered the trailerwhere didshe want me to go She slowly started inching toward me with onehand extended out at her side the other pointed out the gate Iinched closer looked out the gate and saw freedom I ran and ranand ran It felt so good to run But it wasn't a big pasturethere were other horses running with me I finally slowed down andturned to see who these horses were awww it's the old one and thecolt I established my dominance immediately the old one thoughcan't he see me awwwhe sees me some but his sight seems to belimited I rested my head on his back it was so good to be withhorses again The colt needed some disipline so did the little longears And there was a filly too and another mare I don't like thismarekeeps challenging me through the fenceMore time passed there was something terribly wrong I delivered mybaby he came too soon Why wasn't he moving Star the other maretried to help mewhat was wrong I couldn't stand it my baby wasdead I went to the barn Buzzards started circlingStar protectedmy baby Then the humans came They dug a hole and buried my babyI went and stood next to the lead mare my human she wascryingfor my baby how odd Star went and stood by the otherhumanthe young ones between us They said some wordscried andwe moved on The attitude changed my human the lead mare her moodsoftened She watched me and sat with me for hours each day Madesure I was eatingwas drinking Over time I healedThere are more horses males and a stud He likes to talk tomeI stomp at him He seems older respectful But my human keepshim away from me All the boys stay away I watch they all standthere and let her groom them even the stud How odd they treat heras if she is part of their herd they treat her like a leadmarethere must be more to this I really want to I really wantto bond I'm just afraid She touched me with a stickactuallyfelt good Slowly I let her get closer she's not forcing meletting me go at my own pace I wonder what it's like being groomedby her I wonderThis is the story of my Amber as I can figure from her eyes Amberis a very sweet gentle spirit She wouldn't have been a lead marein the wild but she would have been up there in the ranks Whatamazes me about her is her calmness her willingness I am not usedto mares quite frankly I prefer the studs and geldings but for somereason from the first time I saw her picture she spoke to me Ididn't really intend on keeping her I just wanted to get her out ofthat situation and help her to realize not all humans are bad Sheis so different from other mares I have met People tell me sheis fuggly I think she is gorgeous True to her name a realbeauty She is slowly coming around and trusting me the other nightI was able to stand right next to her shoulder She is very headshyI'm thinking it'll be her shoulder that I'll touch first I amlearning so much from her It was amazing it was like she knew hername she responded to it immediately I hope with her story morepeople will realize as I have that it doesn't matter the age of thehorse or the title bestowed on them as Sale Authority or threestrikers they are not 'bad' horses They are ones that just werevictims of circumstance they will make awesome horses too given thetime and understanding I truely believe
