General Franco was born in 1892 and he died in 1975 Franco is the man most linked to the armys victory in the Spanish Civil War Franco had been born into a military family From 1907 to 1910 he was educated at Toledo Infantry Academy and he served in Spanish Morocco from 1910 to 1927 He made a name for himself leading attacks against Moroccan nationalists and in 1927 was promoted to full general and made principal of Saragossa Military Academy He stayed out of politics until he was ordered to put down a strike by coal miners in the Asturias Here the miners had created a soviet a word that struck fear into many western Europeans Franco suppressed the coal strike with efficiency but very ruthlessly This one incident sealed his reputation for brutality though Franco saw it as he and his army simply carrying out an order to the best of his efficiency By 1936 Franco was chief of staff for the military In July 1936 Franco lead a revolt against the Popular Front It started in the Canary Islands where Franco was governor and spread to Morocco where he had made many contacts in the 17 years he was based there In October 1936 Franco was appointed generalissimo of Nationalist Spain and head of state This had the support of all those various factions on the right In November 1936 Nazi Germany and Fascist Spain recognised Franco as the legitimate ruler of Spain His government was recognised as legitimate by the French and the British in February 1939 In April 1939 America recognised Franco as head of Spain Why did Britain France and America recognise a man associated with brutality and right wing politics First the Nationalists had won the civil war by April 1939 when Madrid surrendered to Francos authority so Franco as leader of Spain was a fait accompli Second the Popular Front was seen for right or wrong as being associated with communism and the fear of this belief was still rampant in Europe Franco was seen as the better bet of the two In 1940 Franco declined Hitlers request to join the Axis in World War Two From 1939 on Franco was a dictator His rule was law Francos Spain displayed all the usual characteristics of a right wing dictatorship All opposition was ruthlessly dealt with the nation had to endure the activities of a secret police force all the aspects of politics that would have been taken for granted in Europe such as fair elections and political opposition were not tolerated in Francos Spain In July 1947 a law was passed that made Franco head of state for life Opposition did occur Students protested about a lack of personal freedom The leaders of the Roman Catholic Church also complained about his dictatorship and Basque separatists were a constant problem Despite this Franco was not a political pariah In 1955 John Foster Dulles Americas highly influential Secretary of State visited him During the Cold War Franco was seen as a safe bet against any spread of communism in western Europe When he died in November 1975 the monarchy was restored when Prince Juan Carlos became head of state as Franco had decreed

Browning HPMade in Belgium 1967 Semiauto single action pistol Caliber 9mm Luger 13rds magazine Type Single Action Chambering 9mm Parabellum also 765mm Parabellum and 40SW in commercialcivilian models Length overall 200 mm Barrel length 118 mm Weight 885 g Magazine 13 rounds 10 rounds in 40SW Initially the High Power pistol was designed by John M Browning in 1925 and was patented in the USA in 1927 soon after the death of the Browning The design was aquired by Belgian stateowned company FN Herstal and improved by FN designer Dieudonne Saive The resulting pistol was shelved until 1935 when Belgian army was ready to adopt new sidearm The HP was offered for trials and won and was adopted as a Model 1935 pistol Soon after that it was also adopted by Belgian police and by many foreign countries including Britich Commonwealth ones UK Canada Australia etc The High Power is the only sidearm that served for both sides in WW2 Germany used many HPs manufactured in occupied Belgium while Allies used HPs manufactured mostly in Canada by company Inglis The HP continues its service well into XXI century with belgian Army and Police British army and many other military and Law Enforcement agencies being second longest living service pistols after the another famous Brownings' design the Colt 1911 Thechnically the High Power pistol also known as Browning HP 35 GP 35 or Model 1935 is a recoil operated locked breech pistol It uses linkless barrel to slide locking see picture above invented by Browning The trigger is single action with external hammer Original HPs featured frame mounted safety at the left side of the frame that locks both sear and slide Modern versions since Mark II also featured ambidextrous safety levers that are also more comfortable to operate Original HPs were available with two sight wersions with standart fixed sights and with rear tangent sights ajustable for distance from 50 to 500 meters Some pre and WW2time guns also featured backstraps with cuts to accomodate removable shoulder stocksholsters Grip panels were made from wood and pistols were availabli with or without lanyard rings The HP was the first military pistol to have high capacity staggered column magazine for 13 rounds plus one loaded in the chamber Newer MilitaryLE versions such as MkII and recent MkIII also marketed under the name of HPSA with added firing pin safety featured more modern fixed combat sights and polymer grip panels Commercial models may feature different sight options and finiches Lates addition to the High Power family is a variation chambered in 40SW cartridge It has redesigned and strenghtened slide to accomodate more powerful cartridge and magazine capacity of 10 rounds In 1980's or so FN also developed version of the HP with double action trigger that was named HPDA It is still marketed by FN but didn't catch the market as well as its predescessor did Copies and clones of the HP are still manufactured around the worls such as Hungarian FEG 9 Bulgarian Arcus etc
