From the book 'Geschichte und Beschreibung der Rassen des Hundes' by Ludwig Beckmann TRANSLATION:nnThese small hairless dogs have the name Chinese Crested in England on our exhibitions they are entered as African dog Their origin apparently is South America nnThe African Chinese dogs are built like sighthounds On the adult dogs there is a crest with long hair on the head and a plume at the end of their tail At the chest and shoulders there is often a thin line of hair The color of the skin is often redgray with dark spots very few white with brown or tan spotsnnAnother form of hairless dogs appears in a more blunt muzzle and the wider head of a terrier but still the slender appearance tucked stomach and the delicate long tail of a sighthound - One of those dogs that was imported from Rio de Janeiro I drew at the dogshow in Munchen 1888 The entire head of this dog is square from above the ears evenly wide and pointed forward the chest remarkably wide the tail at the beginning wide and suddenly becoming thin and pointed in shape in the middle of the head there was a row of black hair the rest of the body completely hairless the skin smooth and shining and strong Amazingly the dog had a strong appearing dewclaw on the inside of the hindlegs There is atrophied dentition with all hairless dogs The size of this dog was: 39cm at withers length 41 cm length of the head 17 cm muzzle 7 cm tail length 20 cm nnHairless dogs are often judged by the American Mr Taunton the only hairless dog show judge who judged in 1888 in Newport and in 1893 in the dogshow in London who says that all hairless breeds and varieties are one and the same while at the shows the special classes are for Mexican and African Hairless Dogs Mar Sieber who observed the dogs often during his journeys has expressed his opinion for many years that all varieties of hairless dogs are originated from the South American breeds
